I explain 3 reasons why you should scalp your bermudagrass throughout the lawn season. Although it may not be common for some grass types, scalping is a regular part of lawn care for bermuda turf. It's something you should do if you want a thick, green, lush lawn. And if you haven't done so already this summer, you might want to consider a height of cut (HOC) reset. We'll go over what that is in this video, so I hope you'll tune in.

Great info, I'm waiting until we get a little break from the heat here in Texas. We are going to be in the 100s for the next week or so. No rain for over 3 weeks. As soon as the weather turns, I will be taking my Bermuda down. Thanks for the video!

Thanks man! Whoa that's hot and dry. Yeah, I'd wait a bit too. We had a nice cool down. That's the main reason I snuck it in. Temps were only in the low 80s and mid 50s at night. It was awesome. Back up in the 90s now. Good luck surviving that heat. Appreciate ya!

Related question: Should use scarifier/de-thatch machine….on Bermuda lawn. Can a scarifier be used as replacement for mechanical aeration/pluggers?

One thing I've found very interesting in cool season turf is the sections that I brought down a quarter inch per week looked worse for longer than the section I took from 3.5 inches to 0.5 inches at once. Common guidance/recommendations would lead me to believe the opposite would happen.
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 4 жыл бұрын
That's crazy. Of course, I don't know near as much about cool season grass, but I wouldn't think that'd be the case. Interesting. Thanks man.

🌞Whoa!! Four times!! That's quite the workout. Great discussion! I typically scalp three times a year: early Spring, before aeration, late Summer. On a different note, what are those power poles in the backyard? That your electrical meter that typically goes on the side of your house?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man. Yeah it was a workout for sure. Fortunately, we had a nice cool down this past week, so the day I did it it was only in the low 80s. Yes, those are the electric meters. One for my house and one for the house behind me. They're fenced in in most of the other yards but I had them not fence ours in. It was gonna take up so much of the space back there with the fence, we didn't want it. Appreciate ya tuning in as always. Have a great weekend man!

Lawn was on fire 2 weeks ago. Then 6 inches of rain in 36 hours. Hot temps and 2 things growing too fast and crazy leafspot. Took it down 1/2 notch on the toro for a mini reset and fungicide. Hope it was enough. Might have to go down a little more but hope not.

Have you tried leaving the hoc lower after “scalping” or do you always have to raise it up a little bit after. Reason I’m asking is I have a new build, bumpy lawn, was mowing with setting 3 on back and 4 on front. Started looking leggy/had brown coming through so just dropped it to 3 and 3 which still gave it a decent scalp. If I drop down to 2 I think I might hit dirt in some spots so was hoping I could maintain at 3
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 2 жыл бұрын
On my new construction Bermuda lawn I’m on setting 2 and 2. It’s bumpy and I’m hitting dirt in the worst spots. But I’m ok with that because I’m just trying to mow low to get the Bermuda to thicken up like crazy. It’s working big time. I’m not so concerned with aesthetics in this first year. More worried about establishment. Mowing low will help with that. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching.

@@BudgetLawns thanks for the reply! So would you recommend going down one more and staying there?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 2 жыл бұрын
You bet. I was on 3 and 3 and just wanted to test 2 and 2 for fun. I liked what I saw and stayed there. Just gotta tinker with it and see what ya like best. If you can get by going lower, I say go for it cause it really thickening up.

What do you use to scalp your lawn? Most rotary mowers only go to 1"? Do you just use the manual reel or will you use the Trimmer now that you have it?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
I'll use the rotary on one pass with the bag on the lowest setting. Then come back to go even lower with the Cal trimmer and catcher on. Not sure how low I'll take it. Trial and error will tell in the spring. Thanks for the question. Appreciate ya!
