Good simple, advice thanks mate. Here in the UK we had a battle with some badgers straight after laying the new lawn, pulling up the new sod every other morning! It was carnage! Grass is very resilient and survived it however, it did mean a few extra weeks to root. Just gave it the first cut about 6 weeks in, and it's looking good. Nice rainy day to after the cut so should be good! 👍

Just subscribed! Came across your video and watched it, very informative. I just had my builder replace my entire old sod with brand new Bermuda sod on their dime. I bought a new house 2 months ago and the sod they put out not just for me but everyone along my street was so poor quality , weeds, etc, dead spots, you name it! I complained enough and they actually replaced my entire lawn with new!! It does look so much better. Now I just need to follow the timeline steps you mentioned . Im already on the watering now. I'll check out your leveling videos.

You've spent $10,000 for grass? That's a lot of money! Would it have been much cheaper to plant new grass seed with starter fertilizer already mixed in and cover it lightly with soil or compost, instead of getting new sod? With grass seed, all you'll have to do is water it to keep the seeds moist (not soggy) until they fully germinated. It's a lot less maintenance required for grass seed than sod. Even though sod is real transplanted grass, there's nothing like planting grass seed from scratch onto a new or an already established, overseeded lawn.

@@BudgetLawns We are in the final stages of a remodel on our new home, and part of that was a new septic system install which nuked the back yard to scorched earth for the trenching and dirtwork. luckily our company was great and they agreed to set aside the deep fallow lome they dug out of the ground, and graded their work with that at the end of the job with skid steer so the soil is prime. Many videos show perfectly flat pro baseball field "after photos" at week four, which I have never seen no matter how well you screed and rake the soil. Thanks again and good luck on your new build.

My two tips: use little plastic food cups to help understand how much watering you’ve done x lay the in strategic spots under your sprinklers and watch them get to whatever level necessary and two buy a little ground moisture gauge, they are cheap and help you understand how moist the soil is below the surface x you may notice the sod may be wet but just below is dry in which case you need to ensure the water is soaking through … bonus tip it is possible to overwater in some seasons and regions - it’s important to let the sod not get moldy etc.

Probably should have specified a calendar in your timeline for new sod care. I moved into a house with two-week-old Bermudagrass sod last October in Georgia, and although the watering advice was right, it was going into dormancy and I didn't actually have to mow it until February.
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
Great point. Thanks for pointing that out. If it's laid in the offseason or close to, that will definitely mix up the care timeline. I should have specified that this is for newly laid sod in the active growing season. Hope you still found some of it helpful for future reference if needed. Thank you for watching. I appreciate your comment.

I just got my front lawn resodded with icon zoysia. One thing i wasnt really told about is 1. To walk your lawn daily to catch possible fungus and disease early and 2. What to do when you notice fungus/disease. Because you water so much in the beginning it could cause fungus. But overall excellent content. I appreciate the mention of when to apply fert. The whole process should be enjoyable and stressing about ferting or applying too much isnt fun. Thanks again

I have been in the landscape management business in middle Georgia for 50 years. In that time fertilizer and herbicides have advanced immensely. They are safer and more long-lasting. I agree with your four-stage program for new lawn care. I would suggest that watering will depend partially on the time of the year, as sod is laid year-round here. The temperature in the 50's will affect watering differently than when it is in the 90's. That said, dormant grass will require less.

Yes, you’re absolutely right. Thank you for the feedback. It’s tough to get all the details in one video, so I’ve had that discussion in other videos about sod laid during different times of the year, especially when dormant. In fact, I just built a new house with dormant Bermuda laid and did this video recently, kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2KVcmeFmM2srMU. Thanks again for watching and your input.

Congrats on the new crib. Since it’s not gonna be hot and summer, the watering will be dialed back. Still want to keep it wet but won’t take as much as it won’t dry as quickly. I don’t use herbicides in the first year. That’s a conservative approach and just my preference. You won’t be worried about those until next summer at the earliest. Fertilize during green up in spring. Hope this helps. Appreciate ya watching.

We've got two large, established hybrid Bermuda lawns (front and back). But just had the landscaper lay new sod in a few problem spots in the backyard. Here are my questions: 1) I'm planning to overseed the established lawns with quality hybrid B seeds (from Oregon). Should I also overseed the new sod so that the new and old lawns are perfectly color-matched? 2) If you do recommend that I also overseed the new sod (one section was laid in late Feb; other sections were laid 2+ weeks ago), do you also recommend that I spread a thin layer of peat moss on the new sod with seeds, too? 3) I've seen other Bermuda lawn experts here say that I should mix peat moss with new seeds in wheelbarrow and then use a spreader. Do you agree? If my seed supplier recommends 2-3 lbs/1,000 sf, how many pounds of seed per bag of peat moss? Or if you don't recommend that method, do you know the setting for a Scotts rotary hand spreader for that ratio of seed to lawn area? Thx for any advice you can impart to me.
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
These are all very good questions. But unfortunately I may not be the right person to answer them for you. I am not a believer in overseeding bermuda. It is such an aggressive spreader that it will fill in any spots that need to be. It is also very hard to match color because there are so many bermuda varieties out there. I have 2-3 in my lawn from when the builder laid the sod and I didn't know any different at the time. I've just learned to live with it as it would be way more stress and work to try and make it perfect. Nothing is perfect in lawn care anyways. To your last question, I'm not sure what setting that would be. Typically you want 2-3 lbs/k. I would set it low and make as many equal passes across the lawn until the seed is gone. I hope this helps. Sorry that it's not exactly what you were looking for. Thank you for tuning in and your questions. Appreciate ya!

Thanks man! Appreciate that. I've never had rust disease, so I can't speak to it specifically. However, I've never treated for any fungus problems in the lawn. I'm about to put down some preventative for spring dead spot, but that's a whole other story. As far as your run of the mill diseases go, I just let the lawn dry out really really good to eliminate the conditions that they thrive in. Then I feed it a little nitrogen to push growth and mow it out. I prefer natural remedies unless it's just a major problem. You can always give a big box fungicide a shot. The one I'm about to use is the Bayer Advanced. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I put down mew Bermuda celebration sod and this week I’ll be the first mow what height do u recommend me mowing it and should I use the rotary mower or straight to the reel
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
Awesome. I would set the height at whatever will take off just the very tips, so that would depend on where it's at right now. You're just trying to snip the ends to help activate better growth and establishment. Personally, I would use the rotary mower until it's better established. Some folks like to jump straight to reel, but I never see a reason to rush anything. That's just me. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question. Appreciate you!

The City has laid sod (24" wide strip) after installing a new concrete sidewslk. Today is September 1, 2020. I have Cool Grass (KBG and Tall fescue). The sod is 4" tall Day time temperatures are topping out at 70-72*F. What should I fertilize with? Name? Brand? Thanks..
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
As mentioned in the video, I don't fertilize new sod until 6-8 weeks in when the sod is really good and rooted. That way it can really take the fertilizer in. If you were to use a starter fert, you'd want to have gotten it down before the sod was laid. On a cool season grass 6 to 8 weeks from now, I'm not as familiar with what the best course of action would be as I'm more experienced with warm season turf. We'll be dormant in 6 to 8 weeks. Finding a turf calendar from an extension office in your area is very beneficial. Thank you for watching. Sorry I couldn't 100% answer your question.

Hello! I was hoping to get your expertise on lawns. I am currently prepping my ground to lay new sod. I prepped my ground last week. Over the weekend, we received heavy rainfall and now the area is flooded. What should i do? Does this mean i should not lay new sod(when ground has dried up)?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns Жыл бұрын
I’m not one of those crazy perfectionists when it comes to laying sod. As long as the ground is graded the way you want it and relatively smoothed out, I say go ahead and lay it down. I’ve never laid my own sod. I enjoy the process of getting things the way I want it over time. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and the question.

Hey! What did you mean at 10:30 that they graded it wrong? I just bought a new construction home and my backyard has some draining issues (it's not level). They came out and measured and said it was fine and to keep an eye on it. I have no idea how to get them to make it level. Any tips?

Level isn’t the same as graded. A good grade will direct water away from the house. Some slope is necessary. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

on my first cut, should i use a bag or no bag on my mower.. is a riding mower safe for the first cut or should i use a push mower?
@BudgetLawns
@BudgetLawns 3 жыл бұрын
No bag. Leave the clippings. They'll act as fertilizer and start adding organic matter to the soil. I would likely use a push mower. It really just depends on how rooted it is. Either way, you want to take it easy since it's the first cut. A push mower will make that easier. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the questions.

I had a pool put in, I’m doing my own landscaping. I put in a half pallet of Bermuda sod . I’ve been watering twice a day for two weeks, stopped for three days of rain, then started back. I mowed once the other day. But it’s layed on a layer of sand, potting soil and dirt mix. On top of road hard brown clay . I live in South Carolina. So brown clay is uncommon, but it’s very hard clay . Have I done enough?

I will be getting new sod laid in about a month at my new home. All I will be doing is watering it regularly to keep it moist. It won't take as much water as the days will be shorter and temps will be cooler than in the summer. It won't dry out as quickly. This video relates mainly to new bermuda sod laid in the prime growing season. This time of year, you just want to keep it a little wet and prepare it to go dormant for winter if you're in a climate that it will. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and the question.

we sodded 5 weeks ago...it looked amazing but now we are noticing (here in Toronto, Canada), that areas under the tree canopy have bald spots. When we touch the areas the bald grass just falls apart and it is dark brown. Is this from too much shade? There are no grubs...we checked. We give it lots of water as you have described. Why do we have patchy bald spots near the curb and under the trees and what can we do to fix this?

Thank you. Appreciate that. Glad you found it helpful. 20-21 hours of sunlight a day is a lot. You just really want to make sure the sod stays moist for the first couple weeks. If that means adding a third cycle, I would do it. However, giving it too much water can be bad. Just make sure not to saturate it. Good luck with the new lawn.
