In this video I go through 3 major reasons you should NOT buy Triumphs new Scrambler 400x. It's a great bike, but not all it's cracked up to be.

I can see why you are being unhappy for Triumph to call the 400x a scrambler. Because 900 is double the price and it is a premium bike. But lets talk about practicality rather than just looks. 900 scrambler isn’t really a true scrambler when you compare it with other brands on the market like the Ducati or the Fantic. They have got longer suspension travel, higher ground clearance and they are even much lighter (150-180kilos). Lets see if the 400x fits in this category or not. Scrambler 400x: Higher ground clearance: 196mm ✅ Longer suspension travel: 150mm front and 150mm rear ✅ Seat height: 835mm ✅ Weight: 179kg wet ✅ Scrambler 900: Ground clearance: 157mm ❌ Suspension travel:120mm front and rear ❌ Seat height: 790mm ❌ Weight: 223kg wet ❌ 400x might not be as good as a dirt bike but it sure can tackle different terrains without a problem. You can go places on the 400x. You can only make it to the local cafe on your 900 ☕️ **I am not a Triumph owner**

Just stumbled on your channel love the vibe and absolutely brilliant video that was my thoughts after looking at one in person in currently looking at the 900’s myself :) mainly ride older Nortons from 1927-67 on my other channel so always interesting. I ended up having to reject 2x 390s and a 411 full of issues so really fancying a 900 at the moment :) hope you are having a great time with the Scrambler.

I own a 400X and love it so admittedly I am biased but I have also been on many other bikes and cannot think of any that even come close to the 400x at its price point. You mentioned fit and finish issues but never provided any specific criticism. Yes the thumb controls are not top of the line but they work well. Shocks, brakes etc are not top of the line but they are all good quality...at this price point you are not going to get top of the line. Accessories - are always hard to get for a new model (I am still waiting for several) but they are coming out. Expectations - walking into aToyota dealership expecting a Porsche maybe a bit unreasonable - both can be great cars you just have to know what you are getting. Same can be said comparing a 400x to bikes that are significantly higher priced or have a different mission profiles. If the 400x meets your use profile you will be hard pressed to find a better bike in my opinion.

I respect your points, but it's not walking into Toyota dealership and expecting a Porsche. It's walking into a Triumph dealership and expecting a Triumph... They are a boutique brand that should reflect that on all of their products. Otherwise, the same 5k can take you really far in a Honda dealership. I think they would have better served their core customer base by releasing this bike at 6.5k and making it a bit nicer. Much like KTM does with their 400 class bikes. I do think its a great bike, but based on the 6 Triumphs, I've owned as well as literally 115 motorcycles I've purchased at this point (I keep a running list) This is a step backwards in progression for the brand. The 660s as their entry point was a better representation of the Triumph name.

I´m not the youngest biker and I´m still something like beginner... I have own 3 motorbikes... Last month I tried Scrambler 400X and it´s great bike for me - light, nimble, powerful enough (for me), relatively cheap... What I love is, that It has almost no plastic parts - I love it. So bikes like KTM, BMW are out of my choice (full of plastic). I love Scrambler 400X. I need nice and good bike / "toy". Actually - it´s really not a fair comparison - Scrambler 400X and 2x more expencive "big" scrambler. I want bike for 6000 and I don´t expect fom it to be on same quality level as bike for twice a money. I want new bike, not very powerful, nice, great... And I´m not willing to spend my money for 12 000+ motorbike (and I dont want usen bike anymore). I have family, another hobbies... to spend my money ;) But - your money, your motorbike, your decision ;) All of us are different people. Have a great joy with your bike ;)

@@DailycozwerksI’m not sure what your expectations are on a “budget” bike, this is hands down a fantastic machine for the price the first finish and quality is exemplary. If you think that the 900 scrambler is more than twice the price of the 400x then the 900 is a rip off. Basic suspension old school lighting and the fit and finish is Definately not twice the price of the 400. I’ve ridden both and the 400x is a supermotard compared to the 900. I also use a bike as they are intended to be used not to glittery accessorise and run to cafes and back. Get it dirty , drop it, wheelie it and have fun with it!! 40hp in a chassis like this is all a real rider needs and you can utilise all of its power !! Well actually 90%of riders don’t use a fraction of their bikes power, handling or braking capabilities yet they feel the need to want to upgrade, it’s all a marketing scam and you’re hooked landed and gutted. 🤙🏼🤙🏼

Not sure what you were expecting for 5k even though you said it's good for the price of 5k...it's like you already knew before you rode it that you wouldn't get one because of what you get for a 5k bike, even though this 5k bike gives you a better bike than other 5k bike competitors.... Yep I'm confused too lol

I specifically said in the video that I decided not to buy it before ever riding it. My ride on it was after already choosing a different bike. The test ride just confirmed I made the right decision. If you look at it directly next to bikes like the Trident, the extra 3k spread over the average buyers 5-year loan starts to look well worth it from a quality for money perspective. Also, keep in mind I have owned a half dozen mini motos at this point. I am no stranger to cheap bikes, but even a $3800 Super Cub feels nicer and higher spec.

I downgraded from a 150 hp sports-tourer to the Triumph 400X and it just fits me so well. Characterful engine, fun acceleration, good ergonomics, runs on practically no gas and super cheap. Even if I end up getting a bigger bike again, I think I'm gonna keep the Triumph on the side because its just such a nice, cheap ride.

Wow…Hard to believe you couldn’t find parts…I just got the scrambler 400x and ordered pretty much every accessory they have for it and got everything in a week. Also changed out the front sprocket to a 15 and the power delivery is much better. I think it’s one of the hottest bikes out right now.

By the way - Scrambler 400X is a new bike. There will be even much more aftermarket parts in short time. This is a bike for people in all world around. So it will be sold in big amount = the more sold bikes / more owners = the bigger market with different parts. Scrambler 400X is on its beginning ;) I sold my BMW F650GS Dakar and I´m going to buy Triumph Scrambler 400X - for me is 400X better bike. I felt MUCH MORE happy while riding it.

1) The fit and finish is as good as any bike in this range. 2) Just 3 months later, a lot of Indian companies are exporting accessories. Zana comes to mind. Even ebay has specific parts and some of the Amazon parts unofficially fit in. You have to give it time. Its a NEW Bike. 3) As someone who is getting older and had its past share of faster bikes (750 cc crotch rocket, SV650, etc), I do not want to ride faster than 80 (true GPS) MPH on the highway. This bikes "suffer" from the 14t front sprocket made for the off-roading crowd. Going to 15t (as installed in the Speed) makes it more pleasant and reduces the 75 MPH cruising speed by about almost 500 rpms. This bike is SUPER COMFORTABLE in stock form for someone who is 5'11" and rides solo. It is also the BEST one at the price (this side of a cruiser) that can carry a small to medium female passenger. The Triumph Scrambler 400X is UNIQUE in the following ways: It is the Scrambler that Kawasaki could have built with their current platforms of what they call "500" (actually 450+cc in their Ninja - Super Sport, Z500 - Naked, Eliminator...) I would have used the torquier engine version of their Eliminator cruiser and voila, it would have completed the whole spectrum and made it a nice bridge to their KLX300 and KLX300SM bikes. Heck it might even have qualified it for power as far as your criteria.

UPDATE: This Scrambler has ONLY 5mm less clearance than the KTM 390 Adventure. That's about 0.2 inches less! Honda's NX500 and SCL500 Scrambler can only dream.....SO yes, you could also mini-adventure (no single tracks, jumps or vertical climbs) and, as the KTM is the yardstick, it will be easier to handle and pickup than the heavyweight adventurers.

You're right on all points. I bought the Scrambler 400 x two weeks ago, and have done my first 1k on it . I love it, but I am a brand new rider, and this is my first bike. So something that is more powerful would be a bit scary for me at this early point in my riding journey, as I am still finessing my throttle control and learning basic riding skills. But even with that, the very short 1st and 2nd gears were instantly noticeable for me. I stopped using 1st gear after a couple of days, as I found that in intersections or light stops, it is very short to the point that if I am first in line and wanted to be a little quick off the line to reach the other "safe" side of the intersection, I had to change gears before even reaching the middle of the intersection, and that's a bit dangerous for someone like me who is still slow with changing gears, and sometimes make mistakes. So I stopped using 1st gear altogether, and now 2nd gear is my new 1st. Also noticed that the bike is perfect for in-city riding where you're always between 50-60 Km/hr. (this is Canada). I tried it on the highway though, and after 80 or 90 Km/hr. (55 miles/hr.), the experience becomes unpleasant. I am not sure if it is the vibrations from the single cylinder, or the lack of wind protection or a combination of both. So for me, this bike is a great first bike for someone to learn on, without being intimidated. Or a great second bike for an experienced rider who is looking for a chill bike around town. It is lightweight, and it looks gorgeous. People turn their heads everywhere I go. Thanks for the review.

You have not given the independent fabricators time. It’s been 4 months since you made this. I had a pre-order scrambler and with in the last couple months, all the sudden you can choose 2 different full exhaust with cat delete, and 4 different slip on exhaust. You can’t expect a new model to automatically have a bunch of aftermarket. Manufacturers do a modest selection of stuff. Aside from the bits from Triumph (seat upgrade, engine guards upper & lower and luggage rack) I have fitted a ADV - Amazon FATECIM 15.5" Clear Universal with 7/8" or 1" Handlebars - ordered an Omega slip-on, and some foam grip sleeves. E-Bay. ( I find stock grips a little too small) You just have to be able to adapt things to your needs.

Great points , The scram 400x is a 1st generation motorcycle ,for a group of people who wanted a lower bar of entry , where they wanted to try the brand and then they have a lot of option up the ladder . BTW there are a lot of after market parts available in india or other asian markets , and the new himalayan 450 has all the same negatives you mentioned , quality , aftermarket etc . Having ridden the 1200x , I could definitely say you got a lot of performance that a sub 500 cc would never be able to give you .

BIG bikes are heavy, too powerful (let´s say scary), expensive... Scrambler 400X is powerful enough (in comparision to for example Royal Enfield HNTR 350), its "full size" bike and mainly VERY NICE ;) Some of us are not able to fully use big and strong bikes ;)

I couldn't bear parting with the GS quite yet, so I thought the $6k 400 was a decent compromise. The price leaves a lot of room in the budget for accessories and aftermarket stuff...when available. I would hope people looking to buy one of these know all of this beforehand. They are being produced out of Bajaj so the quality absolutely wasn't going to be the same, it's a brand new model globally so there aren't going to be many accessories yet though there definitely some out now and how much power it has. Not entirely sure what you were hoping to get out of this bike I guess. Now that being said, as an owner some things that people really need to be aware of right now: 1. You have to wait for it to cycle when you turn it on. People are having issues with the ECU in regards to that. 2. Mine has randomly died on me at lower speeds/RPMs MANY times. Sometimes it struggles to restart. Not great when you're in traffic. 3. It has issues shifting. Mine has multiple times not wanted to get into gear both upshifting and downshifting. Again not great in traffic. Others are having those issues as well. I really wanted to like this bike more. Overall it's still absolutely a fun bike. Super nimble and quick for a 400 single and looks great but I'm already looking into trading it. Sadly I have some Evotech parts arriving tomorrow too.

I did a testride on 400X and it was absolutely great. Shifting was fine and great. I´m used to gearbox from BMW F650GS Dakar - and it´s very tough compared to 400X :). Sometimes there is need to rew engine before shifting ;) After all - Scrambler 400X is a new bike - so it needs time to be perfect (it´s normal, that new products are not perfect. It´s good to wait a year and then buy)

I have 6k miles on mine with out one problem, never stalled, no immobilizer issue, the clutch and transmission on this bike just might be the the smoothest and best tranny I’ve ever used, I have not missed one shift yet, I’ve been riding 45 years now! The only problem this bike has is new riders that don’t have a clue on riding motorcycles!! This bike is fun, light has great power and a total blast to ride!!! All for a great price. I especially like the way you described the engine characteristics...first two gears too short, poor low-end torque, and have to get up to 6,000+ to feel the torque & power kick in. I hate this characteristic...kind of like the KTM 390. Thanks for the great explanation...I'm passing on the Triumph. I'm an old guy who doesn't have the strength any more to lug around and pick up huge adventure bikes. I'm looking for a lighter and capable bike in the 400-500cc niche that would be excellent in my big town and also good on the mountain dirt roads. genuinely appreciate the straight talking critiques you've made on the Triumph 400's. Some of the things you stated are not really a concern to me like the aftermarket parts, and your critique about soft low RPM torque is actually a positive for my confidence as a new rider about to take MSF. Compared to your video, just about every other influencer video is either pompom cheerleading these bikes or avoiding firm criticism. Some of your points do make me have a stronger consideration for the Speed 400 despite the aesthetic of the Scrambler 400x drawing me in.

They clearly had to cut corners to come in at that price. The levers connection point was a bit flimsy. The exhaust heat shield and other assorted covers are thin and tin feeling, the hand controls are also much lower quality than normal. Paintwork however is still really nice. It's totally fair that they cut corners to meet the price, but I just want people to know what to expect.

I want I want I want!!!!!!! What did you expect it's a brand new model from the ground up its triumphs biggest seller and will win many awards it's a global hit and is amazing value for money I have the scrambler 400x I preferred the speed 400 ride but was to cramped for my height I don't regret my purchase the quality is very good I agree the 1st and 2nd gear are low but there is plenty enough power I thrash mine around all day I do plan to change the sprocket apparently the speed 400 fits I've just ordered after market parts from Thailand like you said triumph don't know when there parts are arriving there's also plenty out already in India where the bikes were launched 6 month or so back the bike is very economical remember its off road styled not a off roader it looks stunning all singles vibrate I have no issue cruising up to 120 km also there is no motorcycle in the world that can compete with it on value for money and branding

Glad you are enjoying it! I definitely think its right for many, just not right for me. I can relate on the Speed 400 feeling a bit more cramped. The Scrambler definitely fit me better. The big problem with lots of aftermarket coming out of India and Thailand is shipping to us folks in the US. Shipping will often cost 2-3 times the amount of the parts. We really need US or European distributors to make it financially viable.

You can use front sprocket from speed 400 or ktm duke or rc 390 15t does the job right (even 16t will do fine but for now I am fine with 15t)

Who is going to respect a comment from a guy with grammar as bad as yours, and possibly the dumbest possible way to spell Johnathan as their name? 😂 Punctuation exists "Jonathon". You should give it a try sometime.

The Triumph 400's are made by Baja in India which is why the fit and finish is crap. They also make Duke 390's and other low ktm cc bikes.

I remember Triumph in the sixties and seventies. The Indian made motorcycles are much better made.

@miketran. They are built in India exactly to Triumph’s specifications for that model. Just like the “real”, Triumphs are made in Thailand to their specifications. Yes, the 400 could be better, but it would cost more. It would not make it better just by moving production to another part of Asia.

My BSA Gold Star 650 was made in India and it isn't crap, the Indians have built a stylish, quality modern retro BSA. The engine is a Rotax DOHC liquid cooled single with a four valve head, it has plenty of grunt and a pleasure to ride fast or slow.
