When my Surround System was a 5.1 I had dual-baffle surrounds and loved them. When I upgraded to a 7.2.4 system the surrounds aimed the sound in directions I didn't care for. I swapped them out for mono-poles and noticed a major improvement! My sound system consists of 4 SVS Ultra Bookshelf speakers (2 for the mains and 2 for the side channels), an SVS Ultra Center speaker, 6 SVS Prime Elevation speakers (4 ceiling mounted for Dolby Atmos and 2 mounted on the back wall for the rear channels) and 2 SVS SB-3000 Subwoofers. The system is powered by a Yamaha Aventage RX-A8A 11 channel AVR connected to a Panamax M5400-PM Power Conditioner.

I recently switched from bipole to monopole for my surround rears. I'm a bit sorry I did. Yes, for precise localization, the monopole is better. However, I find that localized sounds are much less common than music or ambient effects. So, yes, for the rare localized sound, the monopole is better. But, for the more common atmospheric sound, the bipole was better (IMHO).

So I got them and have a pair of in ceiling speakers I can use for the dipole speakers with my Denon x4800h 9.2 receiver for my home theater system with my front main speakers are Klipsch 600m II mains with a Klipsch 600c center speaker with a Klipsch 1000 subwoofer all in a awesome bedroom system need a installed

I’m not sure if you mentioned it or not, but the Arendal’s can be run in either monopole mode or triaxial mode. Just have to remove the jumper and plug into the lower binding posts and that will disable the side drivers.

Great video. I also have dipole sides in one of my rooms, for the exact reason you mentioned- close proximity of seating to the rear wall. Also, i found bipole to be a very interesting effect for movies where the sound effect is intended to not be localized. Like for example, in Batman begins, there are two scenes that blew me away with bipoles. (1) When Bruce 1st explores the batcave with Alfred, the echo of his speech in the cave is accentuated and very realistic with bipole speakers. (2) When Bruce first takes the black flower at Ras al gul's training and he fights Ras, Ras' voice echoes around the room, making it very hard to tell where his voice comes from, while Bruce tries to find Ras. Very cool effect.

In my 7.2.4 Home Cinema I prefer traditional surround speakers for Atmos movies and surround games to be able to precisely localize the sounds. I don't get the idea of diffusing the sound on modern Atmos soundtracks. Anyway, it's a pleasure to watch your videos, your voice always makes them very relaxing 🙂

When ProLogic was out - the 2 back speakers carried the same sound. Dolby advised sound engineers to put indistinct sounds (wind, rain, traffic) to the rear channel and Dipole speakers were popular. When 5.1 came out - things changed. Now sound engineers could send full-range sound to 1 rear speaker. Now Dolby advised direct radiators for the rears so sounds could swirl. Dipole speakers became obsolete when this happened but Dolby just quietly changed their recommendation for rear speakers. Dipoles have no reason to exist in modern home theaters.

Did you find that using the bipole/dipole speakers as surrounds negatively impacted your Atmos experience vs. using monopoles?
@HomeTheaterHobbyist2 жыл бұрын
Bipolar/dipole speakers enhanced the ambience but it was harder to localize effects so for Atmos movies with heavy effects I prefer monopoles. But if a movie has chosen to use ambient sound a lot, surrounds win. So what we all should do is spend tons of money and have both a pair monopoles and a pair of bipole/dipole! 😂😂 Just kidding. In my theater I prefer monopoles.

Your subscriber from Kenya (🇰🇪), East Africa. Thanks for the explainer, your presentations are always on point, keep it up! I have a 65" Sony Tv - X80L (2023 Model). I am to upgrade to a 9.2/4 channel receiver (looking at Sony STR-AZ3000ES or Denon XR-3800H or Integra DRX-5.4). What is your recommendation on the 5.1.2 speakers configuration for a living room of mixed usage = 11ft x 11ft with an 8.5/9ft ceiling height? Currently I am in a rented apartment and also building a house with the same living room measurements, with an open plan kitchen - US of A plans)! SPEAKER SERIES? 1 Klipsch RP II Centre Channel speaker? 2 Klipsch RP II Towers/FL standing OR Book shelves? (though my preference is the towers/standing, but with small prints, for the aesthetic) 2 Klipsch RP II - Bipole for side or rear surrounds? 2 Klipsch RP II Doly Atmos SA? 1 Subwoofer of Klipsch RP 10" vs 12" OR SVS 10" vs 12" (ported or enclosed) TIA

Hi Kenya! 🇰🇪 I'm so excited for you getting your new setup!!! 😁😁 If you like the Klipsch I would go for them or the JBL HDI line I reviewed them a while back and enjoyed their sound (reviewed here kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYXbn3VnbqilqqM). 1. I would definitely get a matching set so they will tonally match. I haven't heard the RP series but a lot of people like them. 2. If you are limited in space the bookshelves speaker will be fine. They don't have as much bass as the towers but that will be taken care of by the subwoofers. 3. For the side and rear surrounds I'd go for bookshelf speakers but if you really want Bipoles then put them in the rear. 4. The SAs will work for Atmos, are you planning to attach them to the ceiling? That would be the best experience instead of relying on audio bouncing off. 5. I'd go for two SVS subs versus 1 big, it will yield better bass experience for each seat. I talked about that here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mavRfpWDls9onrc Hopefully this helps!

The elephant in the room here is surely that in an Amos/ object based sound system, Dolby-on their website recommends direct firing loud speakers, and presumably the film/movie sound track will have been engineered to be delivered by that type of speaker. I have a thx select Jamo D500 system, which indeed does have indirect side speakers, well i would have if my Onkyo thx receiver had not died due to issues with the soldering of one of the chips inside, but i digress. (Yes, I'm an old coot) :) As for the side speakers possibly sounding "too loud" there are adjustments in the settings to turn the volume down, presumably the auto calibration has miss-judged its closeness to the seating position, and dialled in the sound to loud a volume for that particular speaker. I'm going out on a limb and going to say that you are well aware of the above, but in the interest of brevity left out the information to keep the presentation under 10min. :) Great channel, wish you much success with it.
@HomeTheaterHobbyist2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, I mentioned the Dolby recommendations in the other video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aIu1ea2VgdqLitU. I agree it could be the system is calibrated incorrectly and therefore the surround is too loud. But remember most calibrations focus on the main listening position, so the surround speaker volume could be perfect for the MLP and a little loud for the person sitting nearest the speaker.

could you open the bipole and unhook one of the sides to make an angled monopole speaker? or is there reasons to not do this
@HomeTheaterHobbyist2 жыл бұрын
Maybe???? I haven't tried it, though. The main reason against it maybe the cabinet design itself may not be conducive to great bass performance but that is just my speculation. If you plan to do this obviously make sure you know how to cap off the wiring, speakers have insulation inside. So if the wiring isn't properly terminated there could be a fire risk. Just be careful.
@secretsq10013 күн бұрын
A bipole is basically and angle monopole, I think the hobbyist is confused with dipole. Bipoles fire simultaneously both sides so basically it like having two monopoles , hello!
