My 2008 Nissan Altima failed the emission test and could not find the cause. Sparkplug, Injectors, MAF, Oxygen sensors, CAtalytic converter, Piston rings everything was addressed but the problem still persisted. Finally, someone noticed that the temperature gauge was always showing a very low value. And it was because the thermostat valve was faulty and was stuck open and the ECU was sensing it as cold start condition always and the fuel air ratio was running rich. The fuel economy was much better after replacing the thermostat valve but I miss the sporty acceleration and pick-up when it was running rich.

I always replace spark plugs and air filter a few months before test. Always take vehicle for about a ten mile road trip to make sure it is at full operating temperature before entering test facility.

With proper routine maintaince all you need before a smog test is make sure your sensors modules are ready if battery was disconnected (drive 20-50 miles resest ECU ), addres and fix check engine light problem if present, fill with premium gasoline the day of test and drive 10-15 miles. Congrats on passing the Smog test!

@@darrinrentruc6614 Thats bull💩! I just passed CA Smog and it only took me 20miles to reset the ECU after disconnecting battery. Just ran the car steady 55 on the freeway for a few miles, parked and turn on AC for a few miles and filled up with premium gas.

I did that and the inspector who put my 1998 Honda Accord on the dynamometer to put it through the tailpipe emissions effed up my radiator... 🫠 Inspector starting bull 💩ing me on how it could be the coolant system that it might have air in it. But my car was running great and didn't overheat...

Also try another car garage on a MOT I had a modified car and they tried to fail my car on a few things mainly emmisuons but the reading on the test didn't seem right. Went to another garage and they tested it and said nothing was wrong with the emmisuons

My 2000 Chevy Express van failed. A complete diagnosis showed that the lower intake manifold gasket ($80 plus $765 labor charge! Yikes!), Leaks in the engine causing gas to get into the sensors. It's going to cost me over $1,000 to pass the emissions test. So, your video, while informative, lacks many common problems with older vehicles where engine parts might need to be replaced.

@Eze&Yare Dominguez Disconnect battery method doesn't work, at least not in my state. They can tell when the last time you disconnected was and make you drive 50 miles and come back to test again so the codes come back

My diesel Van here in Philippines failed the emission test 3x already....I changed the air filter but just got my oil changed done today with an oil additive of about 450 ml I'm looking forward tomorrow again for the 4th time to finally nail this emission...I figured I don't have to do pressure wash on my muffler cuz they say it helps but at the same time Im concern about if water might get up there to the engine that would create more damage...does diesel engine have 02 sensor also?

ok my '12 escape failed emissions test but no codes are coming up me and my dad are mechanics and cant find anything in the Computer the test site said it cant read but our computers both read it just fine we dont kno what to do?

My mother’s car only had a little over 1442 miles on it. It’s a 2017 Buick Encore. Mechanic stated it was because of the mileage and the sensors did not register. Is this true. What does miles on the car have to do with emissions test?

temperature sensor would be the cheapest possibility. A dirty MAF-sensor would also be easy/cheap to fix.

yes, the people at the emission testing station just want money and would give you the failed test paper to make you go to the car shop and pay and come back to pay more then will give you another failed test paper and it will go on and on...Emission is a joke.

Oxygen sensor tells ECU about the about the amount of oxygen in the fume. ECU is then adding oxygen if necessary. Without oxygen, catalytic converter can't reduce carbon monoxide. Obviously, you have no understanding at all.

A clogged catalytic converter can't reduce carbon monoxide. If you mostly drive short distances, your catalytic converter will get clogged.

wow, that is sad. I feel like it should be an option: if a car fails an emission test, it should be allowed to be able to fix the issue and retake the test without fees. Or is it already like this? I don't know I just turned 16 and I was practicing for G1 until I came across a question about emission test in the G1 test.
