This video won't show you how to fix faulty engine! ..Or do the service, what has to be done anyway..
Quite often if your diesel engine is fine, you still fail MOT on emissions. Why? In this video I'll try to explain what's going on, based on my experience.

Great video and advice! My A4 1.9TDi failed its MOT yesterday (165k miles). I used a fuel additive (the test centre suggested this) then I followed your advice exactly. It passed today with a huge reduction in the smoke readings - huge thanks :) I'm hoping my car lasts as long as yours!

My 2014 Ford Focus TDCI failed the smoke test by a lot two weeks ago. The garage put some cleaner in the tank and I took it on a long run. It failed the retest again though. I then came across this video and took it out for a blast as you described. This afternoon it sailed through its MOT. Thanks for the advice. I’ll be doing this every now and again from now on.

that's is the key to keep your engine running well. some people blame the cars to break down for no reason, the question I ask is, have you everbtake your car for long drive? they come back and say no. special with u got dpf u need make long drive for it to clean. my mondeo mk4 I have 147 k miles on the clock and still 1 dpf. and runs great. every day it run in long journeys. great car. I love work on tdis but some people don't know how to look after them.

My pre DPF diesel failed its MOT on emissions a few days ago, I'm so glad I watched your video. It's due in tomorrow and will take your advice with great confidence that it will get through. I have a BMW 320 cd it's the coupe. I drive like you mentioned never over 2k rpm I always baby the engine, which has 100k. when I push the engine grey black smoke is produced, out of 10 (1 being like a new engine 10 being thick black clouds) I'd say it's about 6/7 it's not black nor thick. I do a lot of town driving so never really get to push the engine but will try to more often now. I've had the car for about 8 months and apparently it had a service just before I bought it. The oil is jet black and runny like it's very old.

What’s your opinion on DPF removals. Mine DPF is removed. Casing is still there but insides taken out. So on visual inspection it looks like DPF still there. There is no smoke from exhaust what so ever. Car Audi 2.0 tdi 170 bhp 2007. Will new MOT affect me. Cheers
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 6 жыл бұрын
This car in the video didn't have a DPF. My current 2012 Sharan has it. I drive a lot, including motorway journeys, car has done 250K miles and I never had any problems with DPF. That makes me believe that if you look after car and give it a good burn DPF is only for good - at least it catches soot. But! I'm just an amateur, so my opinion may be wrong. I hope you don't get into trouble with removed DPF with stricter MOT rules.

My wife car just failed as well but not surprised it did as she got the car after me and the car is on approx 190k miles now. She only takes the car and does about 1.5k a year now so no wonder why it failed if the car did not had a proper run down for the last 2 years :) Any way I knew something was wrong when I heard the MOT tester reving and reving the engine so I come up to him and explained but I saw on his machine the car was doing 0.71m-1 on the emission machine where it was set at 0.51m-1 for it to pass. Now I went home and I have a good read on how it works, for these unlucky ones like me I think there is a loophole, a tester has to set the soot emissions on the machine as per the vehicle label (according to DVLA, this label is visible at least on my wife car on the driver door, near the tyre pressure label). Now I know that the tester has to enter them manually as its actually 0.50m-1 on my wifes car, but when I looked around Ford Mondeo 1.8 tdci comes with 0.51m-1 so my assumption here is that MOT tester just entered the figure from his head as he must be doing fair amount of Mondeo and its not entered automatically from a number plate or so. Now a best part is, on a GOV site it says that if a label is not visible or does not contain manufacture soot emissions level then a MOT tester has to go by default settings, which are provided by GOV according to some vehicle manufacture year. Now my wifes vehicle is "First First used on or after 1 July 2008 All diesels 1.5m-1 " So simply if I remove the label of the vehicle an MOT tester should then go by the default values so if I saw my car was doing 0.71m-1 it should PASS tomorrow :) and if he fails it gain I will remind about the rules and will ask him to show my a label, which is now gone.

@wawayltd 5 жыл бұрын
Wow, learn something new every day :) Didn't know about labels..

@@wawayltd I scratched the number of the label where it was showing a soot emissions level and when I took the car for a retest I tapped the MOT tester on the back and informed him about the label "accidentally" just got slightly damaged and he set the machine as 1.5m-1 soot limit and the car passed right away :) To me its clear that the gov just trying to get rid of the diesels slowly of the road.

Hi there, have you ever had a rough idle issue on your audi a6? I have it only 2.0 tdi a6, i notice the rpm needle is a tiny bit jumpy. can you give some advice?
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 8 жыл бұрын
+David Cohen Lots of people complaining about rough idle in this car. Some blame bad engine mounts. I don't have a straight answer. The car in the video had done 409k miles before I got rid of it. Mainly I got rid of it, because of age limit for taxi licence. In her last days I had rough idle after motorway journeys. Then one day I've lost oil pressure - probably pump failure. I don't know if it has anything to do with rough idle, because I didn't fix it and got myself 2012 VW Sharan now. But I would love to find out what's causing rough idle!
@mudemmeonick
@mudemmeonick 7 жыл бұрын
Torsion out of spec, in case it's a PD. Injector balance, injectors wire loom and/or EGR map, this last issue can be mitigated by an EGR reducer plate. Those are usually the common issues for the rough idle on the 2.0Tdi. However the 2.0Tdi is a natural unbalanced engine. It was pretty much rushed to comply with the Euro IV norms so a perfect smooth idle isn't to be expected from a 2.0Tdi. One of the best things that can be done for a PD diesel before going in for a MOT if the car is just driven around town is to go for an italian tune up.

Does your car have a diesel particulate filter (dpf) ? And also have you ever had any work done on the engine oil pump as these are known to fail on the 2.0 tdi engines and totally ruin the engine. 345000 miles is fantastic from what mileage have you owned the car ? Keep up the good work.
@wawayltd
@wawayltd 9 жыл бұрын
I was lucky enough not to have DPF in this model :) Yes, I did have problem with the oil pump. Early 2.0tdi's had bad design for oil pumps - they were chain driven. Later they started doing them gear driven. I bought the car in 2008 with 35k on a clock. On 45k I had oil pump failure. I've managed to make dealership cover most of repair cost, despite I was using the car as a taxi. So that repair lasted all the way till this Christmas. With 409.000 miles on a clock my oil pump said - 'that's it! I'm tired' :( I think oil pump failure wouldn't ruin the engine, if you stop it straight away and don't run it with no oil pressure. Anyway, with licensing regulations, I could use this Audi as a taxi only till March 2015, so I decided there is no point of investing for the sake of couple months and I gave up on it. Sadly, I don't have this Audi any more. Now I drive 2012 VW Sharan 2.0tdi. My next few videos will be about my new Sharan.

Mileage is irrelevant as long as you look after your engine with regular services and replace parts when needed, I had an emissions fail once years ago smoke levels were a high my own fault for driving it on short trips i was told by the old guy doing the mot take it round the block and really open it up i did that and went though no problem, these days I put a tank of Vpower in 1 week before i go up to the mot, my garage is 16 mile away so on the morning i drive bloody hard all the way up there the shit that comes out when you first do it is unbelievable but soon clears and goes straight through, my Japanese diesel has 300k on the clock, engine is still original and original turbo and goes through emissions test just fine, my driving style is easy so it does get gummed up i usually blast it every so often just to clear the cobwebs, like you say its not the high rpm that clears it is the load you put the engine under and making sure the turbo gets up to full boost to blast the shit through.

I been having hard time with catalytic converters and engine light comes on my nissan frontier 2001 everytime so here. What they told me. Change the oil. A brand called. Seafoam works so wonders! Under 10 bucks. I put abit in motor and all in gas. And i put premium gas cause it burns faster and hotter which help break down the bad stuff and go buy those electronics that takes ur motor lights off r before u go for ur emissions test. Cause if it on it fails. So. Then second part is to get ur oil change then go on free way. 3500 to 4 rew. And try. Whatever u were driving let say u ever went over 44mph go double it. The hotter it get. The better. And drive about. 6 miles. And haul down to get ur emissions test done. And leave ur car running whole time dont turn it off and wait. It a no no. Helps this helps

What about the 2 products liqui-molySuper Diesel Additive and Smoke ? The vendor suggested this: 1 .Step Use our Super Diesel Additive to clean your Fuel System, to prevent it from deposites and to optimize the combustion. When you have a optimal combustion, you will reduze the emissions as well. This Additive is sufficient for up to 75 L fuel. for the mx dosage,there should be at least 35 liters in the tank. 2. Step For the pure reduce of the diesel Smoke, i could recomend you to use our Diesel Smoke Stop. This one reduces the burning temperatur of the soot . Use these two products after another, to get the best result.

I wonder if this same problem occurs with larger vans. It's common to find large vans with diesel engines no more powerful than in standard family cars. Engines in cars are just WAY overpowered these days, which means they are very rarely running at anything like their optimum load level. With large vans it's different, as many will have a top speed of only around 70mph, and with a headwind you can be running flat-out and still not be over the speed limit. The maths for cars is all wrong. My 1.9Tdi car has a top speed of 120mph, which is a) quite normal these days, and b) NUTS! To drive at 120mph takes EIGHT TIMES as much power as it does to drive at half that speed (60mph). That's EIGHT TIMES (8x). So even at 70mph on a motorway, the engine is still only running at about 20% load. That's no good for an engine. It would be much better to have the same car with a 1 litre 40kW engine instead of a 2 litre 80kW engine. But you can't buy them. They're just not available. I have to block off most of the radiator grille to ensure the engine gets up to full temperature. (It's a VW, so the temperature gauge SAYS it's running at 90 degrees, but the gauge is designed to show 90 degrees at any 'normal' temperature - anywhere between about 75 and 107, if my memory serves me. I use an app to show me the actual temperature.) Note, there's nothing wrong with the car - the thermostat is fine, etc, etc. It's just that these engines are very efficient and just don't produce enough heat unless they are driven hard, and you can't drive them hard enough without speeding.

Great tips, the main problem now with diesels is passing a MOT with a DPF fitted!

F*** TDI, reliable engines but when the problems star to appear you will spend a lot of money, my 1.9 TDI BKC (110K miles) fail on MOT opacity test (this is what they measure, the black smoke not the emissions) and i have a heavy foot for Diesel cars, a lot of money spend in two services and they don't know what to do or what is the problem. In the past i used to have an Renault 1.5 dci E3, I've done over 300k without any problem.
