They're a lot less popular/discussed than NAS's, but direct attached storage (DAS) is another great option if you don't need the network connectivity, and just want aggregated storage accessible over USB, SATA, etc. It also removes some of the risks inherent to NAS devices, i.e. the QNAP compromise.

There are a few more reasons, also. You can use Snapshots as backup or even backup in cloud with HBS software during the night. It is a great solution for teams, working in Premiere Pro Productions environment, also.

Great video Matt. What are the read and write speeds on your NAS? Here's what I do. I store all my data on the NAS, then download what I need to a Samsung X5 Portable SSD. It has read and write speeds of 2,800MB/s and 2,300MB/s respectively, which really helps during editing and exporting. Once done, I upload any of the newly created files and video output back to the NAS. I've tried editing off my NAS. It's okay but nothing like that X5 SSD! 👍 Oh and we say NAS like "Jazz"! It's potato, potahto, you know! But you make it sound much more "fancier". Hehe! 😏

Just replaced a failing drive in my NAS. Thankfully my NAS keeps me updated via email when a drives health is deteriorating. Zero downtime and zero lost files. Literally took me 5 minutes to replace and press a few buttons to rebuild the volume all without powering down the NAS. I also backup my recent work to another offsite NAS. Thank goodness for gigabit internet.

Something you did not cover Matt is .... what you do when you have to add capacity. Does QNAP have software that allows you to just add larger hard drives over time, and it will reconfigure like Synology? For me, that's a deal-breaker as every time I get a hard drive set up and sorted out, I quickly realise that I'm running out of space in no time. I'm at 27TB, and this year I think I will get close to 40TB. Real shame Drobo has gone under as that was the perfect solution for a DAS that you back up to Backblaze for no extra cost (NAS normally cost more to back up to cloud services) Great video as ever.

Pronounced "Nazz" (like "Razz", from someone who has been using them for decades). I rarely ever edit off a NAS...edit locally off internal or external SSD, then sync files back to your NAS (I script my backups, e.g. w/ rsync, but there are backup apps out there). For faster over-the-wire throughput, look for HW that supports link aggregation/bonding. Of course your routers must support it, as well. I've used Synology for ages, but there are many decent NAS vendors out there. For the bold, you can usually configure your NAS to act as a 'cloud', directly accessible from anywhere in the world, e.g., via OpenVPN, but if you're not IT-savvy, best to use the vendor's 'cloud' mirroring services, otherwise you might inadvertently open up your NAS to the world.

But better anyway get a backup for any NAS😅 This summer my NAS (QNAP) just burned up, and after few month the next one had issues with raid and it was really really hard to get to my files. Everybody alway talks about Storage space for backup. I have very large projects I need to edit in real time. My current FCPX project is sitting at 7TB, the project itself, the raw files are much greater. So talking about space just isn't enough.

Look into TrueNAS. I turned a Dell T330 into a home NAS with TrueNAS. Got 7x 2TB drives in RAID6, got 7.5TB usable drive space and 2 drive failure survival.

About 8 years ago I went with a similar product, a DROBO B800fs. It was just so slow with backing up over Ethernet (only option), taking days, and already the driver software is now legacy. No wonder used ones sell for cheap on eBay now. I still have all eight of the 3TB drives that could likely work on a QNAP, but still pretty spooked about my first NAS experience.

I bought the Drobo 5D (not nas) and even bought a card for the cache memory slot. It was pretty quick for what I needed it for. Then the actual Drobo died after only 2 years and wouldn't read the drives. Went to look to replace it and come to find out the company declared bankruptcy last year after two years of every product on the site saying out of stock. I now have a heavy brick and 4 TB of forever lost data (my fault for not having a backup). Drobo was a terrible product.

NASs are actually pretty easy to setup and configure. if you can justify the cost grab a QNAP or Synology. they're pretty much plug and play and they make everything pretty simple to setup. if you have the option try to get something that can do thunderbolt (if your computer supports it) as that's one of the more easy connection methods for it. otherwise look into 2.5gbe or 10gbe. good luck!

I just have an OS NVME Drive , and two other 2 TB NVME for active projects I’m working on and back up to two internal inexpensive 16 TB spinning Drives for archives. Each year I get new archive drives and leave one of last year’s large hard drive in case I need to access for clients.

CHM is a great option if you're Christian. There are lots of "health sharing ministries" that act as insurance for emergencies. The biggest thing on top of that is having a sizeable emergency fund!

Can you calirify on the "SSD like speeds" on the NAS? that doesn't make much sense to my knowledge. Even with a 10GB ethernet, you still using slow HDDs so the speed will be at most the same as that of any HDD

Correct. Agree with Tomasz here, as well. A NAS will rarely, if ever get you SSD speeds. SSD is basically a light speed HD (pure circuitry/no moving parts). As long as an HD has moving parts (read: spinning/spindle drives - even 7200 rpm) it'll never match SSD, unless your NAS has all SSD drives (doable, but very expensive). Even if you're directly attached via CAT6 ethernet cable or better (and most don't, preferring Wi-Fi access), local/USB attached SSD will still be faster. There are 'upper end' ethernet solutions, of course, but it somewhat defeats the purpose of a 'convenient' home-based cloud network if you have to tether.

Dont open your qnap to online cloud.. I wouldnt recommend it. We got our QNAP nas hit with malware ransomware and it encrypted some of our files a while back. Dont do it Matt, just keep it off line.

QNAP is vulnerable to ransomware...My NAS (TS 251+) was encrypted with a ransomware called deadbolt asking for a large bitcoin deposit to release the key. QNAP is not my preferred method anymore. Keep that in mind !

I'm still researching this but it appears there's a high fail rate at rebuilding data when using the RAID 5 configuration if your drive is not an enterprise version and you are using a harddrive with high storage like 16TB. Would love to know if anyone here has figured out a best practice when trying to max out TB but have a good rebuild rate in RAID 5.

You should look the Level1Tech videos why the 1980th technology of RAID shouldn't be used anymore. And yes RAID 5 with more then 4TB drives is madness and not advised by any storage producer since at least 2010. It's just mathematical proven from the drive specs that there will be a bit error during rebuilding. And thats enough to crash all of it.

A little off topic because I'm not a film maker but I'm trying to figure out whether I really need a NAS for my home theater. I'm thinking maybe a PC with several hard disc connected via USB would work just fine to stream 4K video for the home theater. Would there really be an advantage to using a NAS for this application? A NAS is already a plug and play 'computer' - it just doesn't ship with a monitor. Most ship with Plex already installed. Plex is a video streaming app optimized for fast reads and all the video codec support you'll need... a world of difference. So, attach NAS, navigate to your NAS console (I use Synology, so this is DSM), install Plex, create a folder (on the NAS) - drop all your vids into it and let Plex do the rest. When you navigate to it for your home theatre, the interface will let you pick and play videos a la the Netflix interface.

Had one of these, QNAP had a major backend hack where literally thousands of home server's got infected with ransomware. I didn't realize my server was getting hacked until after more than 10TB of footage was encrypted (never recovered it, some of which was wedding footage btw). I will never trust a NAS again, only direct/local storage. I use OWC's local raid setups now, much better speeds & there not connected to the internet (Yes, my computer can still get hacked, but I keep it updated to the latest OS). So unless you're savvy with network protocols I'd say away from this product.

I’ve heard about that happening with QNAP devices. I think a nas is still a good choice as long as you either A: keep it up to date as often as possible, or B: have it setup in a way that it is only accessible on your local network and not accessible from the broader internet. I realize that will negate some of the usefulness of a nas but is a good safety net.

It's a little more annoying to connect to that way, but it keeps things safe. There are tons of videos on how to set that up, it's really not that bad.

That's the purpose of a NAS. They're essentially like a cloud based storage (think One Drive, Google Drive etc...) but at your home without any monthly subscriptions. With the proper setup, you'll be able to use your NAS like a cloud storage

Depends on how you want to access over the internet. Making a VPN on a NAS or on your home router is not too hard. Then you can remotely log into your NAS or map network drives through SMB. But the speed is not so fast over the internet. Not fast enough to directly edit off the NAS. You can generate proxies so you can download the proxy and edit. Davinci Resolve 18 makes proxy editing especially easy. Another option is having your 4K or 8K media on a NAS. But put proxies on LucidLink. You can then use your preferred editing software as if the proxy were on your laptop even though it is actually on the LucidLink server. Third option is to keep a PC where the NAS is and use Parsec to remotely control the PC to edit video off the NAS. But the image quality of Parsec is not perfect. For some, it is good enough.

@@herokme0that will depend on your internet speeds.. adding an Ethernet cable won’t magically make your upload speeds faster when the bottleneck is someone else’s server. As for LAN an Ethernet connection will help but then the bottlenecks become the NIC or the HDD’s themselves. I’m still scratching my head as to why this dude spent the money on a 10G NIC for mechanical HDD’s. I doubt he will even saturate a gigabit with that setup lol.

What a waste of time this video is. All 3 reasons can simply be achieved with other cheaper solutions. You did not cover the main reason that someone would like to invest in NAS and that is sharing capabilities. I particularly would like to know what is the speed transfer, if I would like to transfer 250GB RAW file wedding from UK to my editor in America. I do know it also depends on internet speed, but you can test with whatever you have and that would be more valuable info for me. All your talking sounds like one big advert and it's sad :(
