I know--the title of this video is a little much. But hear me out.
My number one goal with this channel is to elevate this vibrant community of ours to a place where people can be empowered by themselves and their own tastes, and not be dissuaded or offended when someone carries an opinion different to theirs about fragrances.
I also want to help you ensure that you are getting the most authentic and realistic experience out of your fragrances, so that you may assess them with accuracy.
Here are three reasons why you may not be getting the most out of your fragrance experience (I suppose this could have been the title of the video, but would you have clicked on it? 😎):
1️⃣ You're not giving your fragrances a full-wearing before deciding how you feel about them
2️⃣ You're not wearing a fragrance during its prime time
3️⃣🅰️ You're letting someone's negative opinion dissuade your interest
3️⃣🅱️ You're resentful when you take someone's recommendation and it doesn't work out
I forgot to mention another very important factor: compliments have nothing to do with how good a fragrance is! Save yourself the trouble and stop fishing for them! If they come, great. But you'll be much happier if you don't evaluate a fragrance based on whether or not others tell you how good you smell. More about this topic here 😉:

Spray heavy it's like the Dos Equis commercial saying stay thirsty my friends! I always seem to hit the trigger a few extra times on my clothes after the skin and the results from the compliments and attention never disappoint! If they don't like the freshness, well F them! I'm going to stay fresh no matter folks feelings! Where I'm smart enough to know the fragrances that can be a bit overbearing versus those that may require an extra few blast! That's why I carry an atomizer with me to refresh when need be! Has never brought me anything less than positive results! The secret is to know the fragrance and the power it possesses, otherwise, you CAN get dangerously out of hand if you're not smart about it!... STAY FRESH MY FRIENDS!..... GREAT BREAKDOWN !....KEEP THE 🔥 COMING!

Very interesting topic of conversation Justin. I utilise KZbin along with Fragrantica and Parfumo to seek out fragrances that appeal to me so I can see how they are universally received. I made the move into niche last year with a rapidly increasing collection. I've quickly realised that its an exceptionally expensive hobby so I sometimes order samples in advance to make sure I like them before purchasing a full bottle. One things for sure it's become a very addictive and rewarding past time but it definitely hits my bank balance. I just can't help myself though.

Most sellers needed cash flow so I cleaned up since covid started spreading. Anyway, it is taking time and seasons to wear them. Im rotating thru each season trying to figure out what's great for me and sell the rest. Any recommendations? I would appreciate it Justin. Thanks and congratulations on your engagement to such a beautiful woman. Great choice😉

something i've been hearing from several work colleagues who also wear fragrances from time to time (although not nearly as much as myself) is they don't spray enough on. i'll usually hear them say how they only do 1-2 sprays max. nobody can smell them which is really unfortunate, and they own some good stuff like tom ford oud wood, prada l'homme and dior sauvage parfum.

Your number 3 here is huge... There are so many fragrances that I absolutely LOVE and some of my most 'trusted noses' that I watch do not like them and suggested they be skipped... It's just like how there are fragrances that are 'universally loved' and I think they are trash... Everyone has their own... Just like Justin said... If you want to sample something get a sample... You made an excellent point about the season for a fragrance weather it's spring and summer, versus fall and winter, or year-round! Some fragrances give me a headache in the summer, whereas in the cooler months they smell fantastic and don't bother me at all! It seems a lot of folks just buy fragrance and spray it whenever it without realizing some of these fragrances are meant for certain seasons, while some others may be a year-round treat

I'm still relatively early in my journey and have only been collecting for about 8 months. I'm still learning every day and am currently opening myself up to barbershop fragrances as it was a class I have tried hard to avoid until last week. I had heard the term "barbershop" mentioned alongside terms such as "classic" and even "dated" so much that my brain instantly went to Old Spice and Brut. Not really wanting anything that smelled like those, I avoided anything I heard referred to as barbershop. Well just last week I got a few samples, 2 of which were actually called "Barbershop" and I like them a lot...one I think I'm already in love with (Barbershop by Happyland if you're curious). They don't smell dated at all. Timeless and perhaps classic, yes, but not dated. I now know that if I hadn't opened my mind and gotten those samples, I could have ended up closing myself off to a whole category of scents that I actually enjoy. My next goal is to really learn what a fougere and a chypre are so that I can identify them myself.

I would also add that skin type comes into play with regards how fragrances perform from one person to another. A colleague of mine wore Sauvage and it smelled fantastic, so much so I bought it myself - didn't smell a thing off my skin, even my wife couldn't detect much. Then something like Halloween Man X is just amazing. Any chance you've had the opportunity to smell Janan Sport? Subbed, dinged that bell and liked the video - greetings from South Wales, UK.

I started out listening to KZbin frag reviews; my top 10 most complimented, beast mode, etc. I soon realized that from one reviewer to the next that their wasn’t a vast difference in the fragrances on their list. Consequently, I assumed these recurring fragrance recommendations were legitimate and began blind buying fragrances. Some of the fragrances were good and some weren’t worth the purchase. That said, I would advise newbies in the fragrance community to take it slow and not get fooled or overwhelmed by all the top 10 panty dropper from Beast Mode Bro or Cutie Pie Smells.

My brain or your brain have different experiences with smelling (from grown up). Just an example Grace Ex Boyfriend wore Layton and she had a bad experience with him. Now you come around with the same fragrance Layton. I think than in her brain is automatically a negativity experience when she smell it. Now imagine how many different experiences we people have with smelling.

Great content Justin. I used to fall into those traps a lot when I first started buying perfumes decades ago, but soon I learned to trust my nose. After a while, I learned that also that a full wearing is the best way to actually judge it (latest is Euphoria Liquid Gold). As for wearing a perfume at the right time, well I also learned it by trial and error (never wear Aramis 900 or Devin in the summer). I still tend to rule out fragrances that don't appeal to me when sprayed on my hand before giving a full wearing (original declaration from Cartier for example).

I just recently realized, how true tip 1 is-2,5 years into collecting. I tried Spice Bomb Extreme several(!) times in the shop on a test stripe because it was so hyped in the community, and I wanted to know what all the fuzz was about. Let's say, I was not impressed at all. Then I got a full bottle through a swap and what can I say it soon became one of my most worn fragrance last fall and winter. My beloved dumb reach when I couldn't decide what to wear or just wanted to feel comfy.

Ohhh, boy... Your videos are so unique! Your thoughts and ideas do not follow this crazy "top long lasting fragrances" mainstream. Thanks so much for being honest. I found myself in these video openings, since I am crazy about jazz. Thank you so much for your Content.

So right about #3. With reviewers online I first want to get an idea as to how they align with my tastes. Sometimes they have convinced me to give some things a try (I think it was one of yours that made me try Guerlain's Ideal Intense) and sometimes they can point out lesser details. It's just extra information. Just try stuff out, give yourself an opportunity to be surprised.

Great episode! I am a self-confessed Blind Buyer (98% of my collection)...that has had great success with my collection development methodology. My collection is under a 100 bottles (I think) and does not include a single disappointment. That being said, I do need to experiment more with my fragrances - be more conscientious about my wears - explore the potential of my fragrances in different temperatures. Ani and Cannabis Bleu are great examples. I discovered that the season/temperature I assumed was best for these two was suboptimal. Once I dared to with things up however, I began to appreciate the truest beauty of these frags. Again, great episode!

@@stayfreshproductions In my naïveté, I thought Ani appropriate for the summer! It smelled amazing in the heat but I now appreciate that it blossoms in cooler weather . I love cannabis Bleu and find it refreshing in the heat of the summer - perhaps because of the eucalyptus note. 🤷🏾‍♂️ BUT I saw a review by Cuba Know that suggested wearing this in cooler weather. I tried that and found that a refreshing feeling changed to a cozy feeling. 🤷🏾‍♂️ All this to say that I concur with your counsel: experiment, explore & appreciate. Thanks again

Those three points are absolutely right. The point #3 is especially nail on the head for many people in frag community. I have done that myself as well, of course but in time, I started to learn more and more that I have “different tastes than other people” and this should be true to everyone. Each one of us has different skin type, body chemistry, senses or interpretation to each notes, likes & dislikes…so and so forth… So whenever I hear some reviewers say certain ways to describe particular fragrances, I always keep in mind to listen with the grain of salt. 🧂👂🏼 It takes a lot of time for me to determine whether I want to buy or not because I usually do a lot of research before I spend my money because I usually don’t buy decants and blind buy the bottle straight away after my research is done. I still do have hit and miss but I’m usually happy with my purchases. One another point I want to say is we tend to follow as human the mass. So we hear and see more of the ”main stream” or “current” or “most popular” hit and hot items in the community and inevitably we overlook the ones that aren’t paid much or any attention to. I guess those ones are sometimes called “hidden gems” and because the hyped up noise is sometimes loud, we could be missing the “hidden gem” that is actually so accessible and so perfectly perfect match with my tastes and my alley but we sometimes lose sight because again the mass crowd is focusing on what’s been under the spotlight. We sometimes need to leave “the party” and go for a nice quiet walk by ourselves to find something special that is only for myself. 🤲🏽✨💎😻

Something which was a bit of a fauxpa on my part early on was I would try something new in the store, never heard of it before, I would like it but I would not be fully sold on it, I would not give it a full wearing, and I would immediately go to see the reviews. And there would not be any, or a few and usually negative. And I would not get it. I now am not afraid to buy something which has not been reviewed by one, two or three of trusted channels. Perfect example Amouage Dia man for the longest time nobody talked about it, certainly not when I got it. It's one of my top 10 scents in my collection and I almost didn't buy it. Now some people have talked about it very recently, but it's still something that most people don't talk about. Don't be afraid to try things the community seems to ignore, trust your nose, this is for particularly when you start out period, or start delving into niche.

Nice point! I’ve been guilty of obsessing in my mind with the idea that a fragrance has to “perform” (a preconceived and assumptive notion of what that actually means mind you) so much so, that it became a placebo effect for my fragrances that performed just fine, to not get picked up by my nose. My brain already decided that I couldn’t smell it! Sounds so crazy but it’s true. Elysium actually performs just fine and it’s possibly my fav of all time, after I hated it for so long for not performing. Two sprays and I thoroughly enjoy it. Less is more with that one. And don’t THINK about smelling it, just let it happen haha

I can honestly say I haven’t done none of the three that you talk about. Although the one topic you have talked about and other videos what about the guy who is a beast mode sprayer LMAO. That’s me I’m that guy. Still I can honestly say it happened out of habit. I owned a few fragrances that were very light, and I used to have to give them a few more sprays than normal. As my collection grew though, and I started to increase my palate I didn’t intern monitor my sprays in the beginning. So I was kind of acting like the Custin Jopeland And your videos. Thank goodness I have calm down a whole hell of a lot, and I know I’ll monitor my fragrances based on performance with the sprays.

The only recommendation I take from anyone on fragrances Is to try, sample or get a tester of a fragrance before buying. I don’t care If they absolutely hate It or fell Instantly In love with It. If the note breakdown sounds Interesting to me, and I want another fragrance for the time of year or situation I think It might be appropriate for, I’m going to at least sample It. I value everyone’s opinion, but It doesn’t override my own, especially In a field that’s 100% subjective.

Wearing something out of seasons is not a sin as long as it works for you. But it should be expected that many summer scents will not project well in winter, and msnt cool weather scents will.project too much in warm weather. Also, my nose always needs some time to "recalibrate" when trying a completely new scent profile. If I dint pije something I bought and it seems too linear I try again multiple times, even up to 6 months later. I have bern shocked how my opinion and nose changes.
