Great advice. Definitely practice wearing at home. I have learned that my enjoyment of a fragrance changes the more I wear it. When I truly enjoy a fragrance my attitude changes, confidence level improves, and I am convinced the people around you can sense it.

Thanks. I practice at home first. Decanters when not sure. Stopped blind buying expensive frags.

#2 Practice - I find this essential. You get to really 'know' the scent, how it behaves, what it's personal, unique traits are and so practice helps to inform the choices you then make with it; specifically when to wear and how to wear, etc. It helps you maximise both it, and yourself. Like you said; working together and with each other.. As my mother used to say; "It's not what you wear, son, it's how you wear it.."

The shorts bit was hilarious. I was laughing out loud. Great video and 100 facts. One thing that I Do with the more Daring bold scents, is i spray and let it dry down, sometimes 1 or 2 hours before I leave the house. This really let's the scent calm down and I feel more confident when I wear it out.

Another one for me I never judge a fragrance based on how it smells on another person. It may smell good/bad on them but for you, it may smell different on you. I have a friend whose body chemistry never worked with some of my favorite colognes.

I think overspraying has its time and place. Many fragrances nowadays just don't perform anymore-especially, but not only designers. You can compensate that to some extent with overspraying. Also, from my experience when I spray what is considered normal (3-5 sprays) I hardly ever get any reaction from people. When I overspray I get compliments nearly every time. And who doesn't like getting a compliment? Or people ask me even on the street what I am wearing, and I am happy to tell and give recommendations. But as always: use common sense! Overspraying to me means for example 15 sprays of D&G The One edp, which is known for its weak performance. That way, you will have a decent scent cloud even after the 1-hour mark. Or 10 sprays with L'Homme Ideal EDP. The first time I did, I got a compliment not only from my date, but also from a guy in the subway and the waitress at the restaurant. That was unreal. With strong stuff like Grand Soir I "overspray" with 4-5 sprays if I am outside, and it's cold. 2-3 sprays when inside. I'm not going crazy like some people with 30+ sprays. But sometimes less isn't more, it's just less.
@moustachio3343 жыл бұрын
I’ve noticed most modern frags are weak. I think it’s to encourage over spraying so that you can run out faster and buy more. I prefer to buy classics. Classics are classic for a reason.
@morepower19893 жыл бұрын
Amen. Fragrances have nowadays crappy performance. I envy people who get good performance with 3 sprays. I also only get compliments when I slightly overspray. Overspray squad here. There are a couple of fragrances I spray carefully but 90% are weak enough to spray 6-10 times.
@solokom3 жыл бұрын
@@morepower1989 I second that. You can spray many fragrances 6-10 times nowadays and it will be like spraying 3-5 times in the old days.

Here's how I pull off Oud Minérale. I "pull it off" the shelf and spray it on haha. I've worn it in a suit and worn it to the beach. It just works for me. The only caveat is that one has to be willing to smell that way for at least two+ days straight. It resists washing and has the half-life of uranium.
@viggenone3 жыл бұрын
The basic rule I use to "challenging" fragrances is control the number of sprays, and the type of event or venue, If I'm going to a restaurant I won't use a fecal oud and apply 20 sprays to obliterate all life forms, I think it's common sense, I can use FM Promise in summer, one spray walk by it and yo will smell amazing even in 40°C. Love Oud Minerale! Great video JC, thank you!!!

When you talk about putting it on and forgetting about it is absolutely true. What actually helped me out with that was COVID. I would put on a fragrance, put on my mask and then leave out. But every now and then when I would slip off my mask in the car, I would catch a whiff of the scent that I forgot I had on.

I've worn plenty of newer fragrances that I haven't tried more than a spray of and I didn't feel the most comfortable wearing it out. I always followed rule #1 when I wasn't sure. Practicing with the fragrance sounds so silly, but it's the only way to understand what you're getting into. Good stuff, Justin. Oh and the blazer with sweater and shorts is definitely high fashion. Hi Justin, such a great topic. I wanted to know your opinion on something that I've found has affected how many sprays I'd put on of a perfume - and that is atmosphere in your city / town. So, I've found that countries like India, broader Asia and Lat Am have very loud atmospheres (olefactorily) with a lot of sources of strong smells generally - from food to floor cleaners to paint and construction, incense from temples etc... In such cases, you can barely smell anything that you put on - like, even small whiffs for yourself of what you're wearing. But on the other hand you don't want to put on so much that you choke people out. Do you think something like this should be a factor in how much you spray on? Would love to know!
@stayfreshproductions3 жыл бұрын
Interesting question…I think you’re on the right track. It’s great to be sensitive to the dynamic of the people around you.

Don't wear a fragrance for any other reason than that you feel it that day! If it challanges you do not wear it outside / for appointments, get comfortable with it first wearing it a few times at home (see #2). Once you wake up and look at it and it talks to you, you are ready to wear it!

I have a bitter pill to prescribe: People who only want compliments are insecure. Don't smell like a people pleaser. Smelling like someone who can say "no" or who has a personality is *more* appealing than smelling like cotton candy and unicorn breath. Be yourself and wear what you like with pride (as long as you're not choking everyone out). You'll have respect which is more valuable than compliments.

I’m just here to comment about the excitement I felt when I actually liked the smell of beau de jour on me. I’m a really young guy, just approaching 20. The fact that my nose is already up to the point where I can appreciate barbershop style fragrance is incredible in my opinion. Still can’t tolerate animalics and leathers but hey maybe that’s because my nose has stuck to its guns on these notes.
@tomn60663 жыл бұрын
I'm a few years older than you and I've loved barbershop style fragrances/old school fougeres since forever as well, but I don't think it's all that incredible since they actually smell good. Like, I don't see anything offputting about them, it's not like they're very challenging like dirtier animalic/leather fragrances as you've mentioned

@@tomn6066 See I remember that earlier in my journey I tried some barbershop fragrances and the overdose of aromatics and spices made me associate them with something burnt. I couldn’t rub it off my nose until a few months later when I sampled platinum egoiste (which in my opinion is the most entry level barbershop fragrance ) and found myself liking it.
