I am glad I saw this video - I have baby vandas that i just bought that arrived with short and one to two viable roots- closed and shriveled leaves, I will do as you have done on your 3 rescues, and I hope they will survive. Thank you, a new fan here.

rmcandlelight There is nothing to fear...but fear itself!!! LOL! ...and if they are in bad condition and have dead roots...make sure you ask a manager for a discounted rate of at least 50%. I never pay full price on my rescue orchids...and if all else fails remember you can always return it with the receipt.

PictureMaria1 Thank you so much for the nicest answer to my comments I've ever got! I think it's so awesome to follow someone's journey with the orchids, I've learned a lot from those type of videos about taking care of the orchids, and what to expect with different methods/treatments. Some people even post failures, which is totally OK, too. Thanks again, and looking forward to your future videos! In the meantime I will watch the older ones back to back :)

Thank you for your vote of confidence. The Banda triplets are doing exceedingly well in such a short time...they have bounced back and look as though they never had the life threatening ordeal at all. They actually surprised me in how quickly they were able to recover. I am so glad I came up with this deep dehydration method that really works...I've saved so many orchids this way. This allows me to get orchids at a nice discounted price and nurse it back to health....a good learning experience and a money saving technique. I am hoping all is well with you and happy growing! :)

Thank you...and indeed they are fully transformed and restored. ....and shockingly in such a short time! I am so amazed at how well the deep hydration method works, it's almost miraculous and now has become a challenge for me every time I see a dehydrated orchids. I came up with this method in effort to save my Maxillaria and have found that it has been universal thus far in saving a variety of orchids. I am so pleased with the method and really don't know what I'd do without it! I am also glad I can share with others that may be facing this ordeal with their orchids...for indeed it's all about living and "GROWING" together! Hoping you are well dear friend...and sending warm orchids wishes your way! :)

Your funky way makes me giggle a little. Love the outdoor space! 24 hr soak should take care of those. Just for starters. Tropical Storm/Hurricane George is pushing through as i type this! The orchids LOVE it. I hate plastic pots. never, ever, saw a plastic pot growing on a tree. Convenient yes, full of chemical by-product, yes, wood retains water and will not drown an orchid as it drips excess and only retains what it can hold. Then releases moisture more slowly increasing humidity in a two foot radius. Wood pots rok the Casbah.

Where are you located. I am hoping that all went well with you and the storm. I wish I could do more mountings with my orchids but I just don't have enough space...many of my branches broke from my tree so that is no longer an option. Hopefully one day soon I can have either a greenhouse or a shade house that will assist me in my mission...the rainy weather here has been such a bummer with my orchids. I am always in fear of rotting issues.

I have actually rescued an oncidium , several phaleonopsis orchids and dendrobiums but I was afraid of vandas . I do have a medium size one and two ascocendas . I see dried out ones at the big box stores all the time but didn't think they were worth spending my time and money on them . By the way , I took your advice on asking to have the price of an orchid reduced and it worked . I just purchased my first brassavola. I wanted a brassavola nodosa , they only had the brassavola hybrid . We shall see how things work for me . Thanks for responding & koodoes for your advice .

....with all of our rescues we should start an orchid emergency clinic! LOL! What technique do you use to save your orchids? ....and yea I never pay full price for an orchid that is damaged or unhealthy....I always go to customer service and ask for a manager, then explain how unsatisfied I am with the plant and ask what is the best price they can give me...if they can give me 50% or lower than we have a deal...I purchased these 3 rescue vandas for the price of one...about $4 a piece...with the proper treatment, they should bloom for me next season...congratulations on your Brassavola...is it the yellow bird hybrid? I have that one. Good luck and best wishes for your newly acquired rescue orchids...keep me posted on its progress... HAPPY GROWING AND RESCUING!

You're so lucky that your garden center even has orchids other than phals. I'm lucky to find a 3 inch cattleya. Nothing blooming. Hope it all goes well. Orchids have the strongest will to live out of all the plants I own. My plumeria seem to give up every once in a while and rot.
@PictureMaria1
@PictureMaria1 9 жыл бұрын
Yea...I have been told that...I believe because we have such great weather for orchids...they are easier to grow in our climate therefore they are more popular in our area...I guess it is a matter of supply and demand...most people would not buy plants that would not do well in their weather conditions so garden centers or any store for that matter would not try and sell something that most would not buy into...it would be a big loss for the company....it is unfortunate though for others though that would be willing to take that chance and go the extra mile to grow these plants... :( ...but fortunate in today's society we have everything at our finger tips and can practically get a hold of everything we want via online or other means of ordering. :)
@Josh-cy6xo
@Josh-cy6xo 9 жыл бұрын
True but ordering online is a lot more expensive rather buying in a store. I hate spending money on orchids that might not survive and have no refunds. That's why I prefer ordinary garden centers because of their cheap prices and refunds. PictureMaria1

Joshuas Aquariums yea your right....and indeed I agree. Is there a Trader Joe's in your area...from what I've seen they have some really good prices and awesome variety. They just built one an hour and a half from where I live...I am making it a point to visit in the near future. Are there any orchids shows or nurseries in your are? There are actually some that travel a bit also to get their orchids...so yea sometimes it just calls for getting creative and being open ...but I do agree with you it does suck. :(

I have a rootless vanda, the roots rotted because I soaked for too long I think. I cut the stem back to live tissue and sealed it with cinnamon. Then I sprayed the whole plant with hydrogen peroxide and bagged it upside down in a transparent drawstring bag, suspended in the shady side of my conservatory. Do you think I'm doing the right thing and is it likely to survive?

@PictureMaria1

Majority of people grow vandas barerooted in a mesh or wooden slat basket. But you will need to ensure that you can water frequently preferably once a day to keep in tip top condition. If you are growing indoors some opt to grow them potted and with some media that can retain water for longer amounts of time. Another option would be to mount a vanda onto a tree or other wood piece. If growing outdoors ensure that you have the conditions for vandas to thrive well. I have many vanda videos so please watch for more tips and advice. I hope this helps. HAPPY GROWING and wishing you the best in your orchid adventures!

Are these Vandas or Vanda Ascocendas? I got 3 Vanda Ascocendas in similar condition from my big box stores garden center and have done something similar to bring them back but will have to start doing it more because their leaves are not entirely open yet.
@PictureMaria1
@PictureMaria1 9 жыл бұрын
Yes one is an asconcenda which require basically the same care tips as a vanda...the main difference is that the asconcendas usually have smaller blossoms and is considered to be miniature in comparison to some of your much larger vandas. It took them a while to get their leaves to open back up...a few of the leaves never did fully open up and were so damaged that they seemed to have been scarred from the harsh neglect that They had received...the good news is that as the vandas grow more leaves from the top...the bottom leaves will eventually fall away and they will be replaced by the much healthier new leaves...so in time it their appearance will be so much healthier will not even show any signs of what occurred to them in the past....it may also be beneficial to them if you continue to do the deep soaking treatment and even keep them in a semi water culture soaking them for 30 minutes to an hour daily. I am hoping much success for your orchid rescued and please keep me posted. HAPPY GROWING! :)

+Humaira Sadari ...so sorry to hear about your vanda...if you can please post some pictures of it on my Facebook page so that I can see it... facebook.com/MyOrchidAdventures ...first I would suggest that you spray it down with peroxide to kill off any bacteria or germs...make sure to cut off the dead roots or any other decayed areas...if there are any open wounds anywhere dab it with some cinnamon powder to dry it out and prevent any infection from spreading...examine your plant closely and make sure that it is not infested with any insects...if you have lysterine mouthwash (the gold colored one) I would spray it down with lysterine just incase there are some insects making a meal out of it...and being that it is sickly right now, I would move it from your current place and move it where it gets a little less heat/light and since it doesn't have any roots I would spray it down as often as you can and at least once daily to encourage more root growth...If this does not work well for you and you notice the same thing or worse in about 1 or 2 weeks...I would try the sphag and bag method for it...I wish you the best and please keep me posted...good luck!

Hi you said that they will survive and I know they will I have one with only one root. Would mine survive?
@PictureMaria1
@PictureMaria1 7 жыл бұрын
Hilda Rivera ...if it is just a matter of the plant growing...yes I believe in time it will produce more root, be sure to water often and also fertilize to encourage healthy growth ...but if it is dealing also with an infection, sickness or insect infestation then it will have a harder time of bouncing back or recovering without first beung treated...sometimes orchids suffer from things we cannot see with the eye...and that's the hard part is trying to identify what may be going on with the orchid. I wish you the best of luck with a successful outcome.

It is hard to identify anything without seeing it. I wondering if perhaps it is an insect infestation such as medley bugs, white flies...etc... or maybe it could be mildew, mold or fungus. Pull up those description on youtube and see if you can identify somethings those videos that resemble what you have then so you cab find the best method to treat it... Good luck and if you find out what it is...let me know. I am also curious to know what it is.

+Loreta Gasmeña The main important thing to do is to isolate from your other orchids incase it is contagious. I would definitely sanitize the entire plant with peroxide or listerine...If it is in any time of media, I would take it completely out and and grow it without media until you know that the coast is clear. If you notice the infection is spreading no matter what you do...it may be time to let it go. :(
