Dear Orchid Wisperer, I have one Vanda and things are not going great. It is alive though. I travel a lot and I researching for any method that could help keep them hydrated in absence. Do you think water beads could be used as a medium? Have you tried water beads ever? My Vanda is hanging from a basket with it's root loose. I have a hard time dunking it since the roots are very long. This is also a reason for me to consider poring them into some medium. I loved your channel. You gave me great insight on how to care for a Vanda. Thank you!!

Hi and thanks so much for watching! I'm thinking about doing a video on this topic...I hear from many viewers your question about travelling and vanda care. I need to do an update on this video (I found a siphon so I don't have to drain the vases anymore! :)) and that will be a good topic to cover. As for water beads, I've never used them as a medium. Do you dunk the roots in a bucket or how do you water your vandas? (Just curious...I've seen several ways to water them.) Keep me posted and I'll make that video soon!

Orchid Whisperer I learned (from you to dunk the Vandas just recently. Before that I used to put them in the shower. Showering worked well, but I really think dunking them is more long lasting. Traveling during summer is a real issue for me. It gets very warm where I live and humidity levels have been varying widely. Just as an experiment I have put water beads on my one Vanda e on one Rhynchostylis. I will obeserve whatever developments I have. About the water beads, I have heard of people very successfully growing orchids on water beads as the exclusive medium. I have mixed water beads and other types of medium together in order to preserve moisture, but I have never used water beads as the exclusive medium. Congrats on this channel! Hi and thanks for your comment! I soak mine for at least 24 hours every 5 days. When I go on vacation for a week, I will soak them for 2 days. What I was going to recommend to you was to do an experiment while you're home...exactly what you're doing. I do have orchids that I experiment with before I try a different method with the others...I call them my "test orchids". I can't wait to hear what your findings are with the water beads, please keep me updated and I can better help growers like you...this is a question I'm asked frequently. Just keep in mind that while you're home, you can give them more "dry time", because they seem to grow really well with frequent wet/dry cycles. But people grow differently, and I'm always looking for new, improved ways to grow. Best wishes and I wish you great success with your experiment! Happy growing! :)

Orchid Whisperer I have updates on the water beads experiment!! Things are looking well enough and I am excited about the results! This new setup is now running for about two weeks. My Vanda is growing roots like crazy, and new leafs too. Before the water beads it was growing at an incredibly slow pace. The leafs have have become very green and seem much healthier. I am loosing some old roots though, and I think I have to cut them in the next days, but most roots have adapted very well. The roots that have started to look strange were probably hurt already from transport and less able to adapt to the new set up. I did still dunk the pot, beads and Orchid in water, since the beads get smaller with time. My pots have several holes on the sides and even with the beads there is breathing space for the roots. I have one Rhynchostylis in the water beads too, but this one has not responded with as much growth, but the roots look fantastic. I think you should try it! I am very sure I can travel and keep Vandas. I wish I could send you a picture of my set up. I have used popcorn buckets (the ones used as party treats) and made several holes in them (with a electric molding iron) for air and to fix the wire I use to hold the Vanda in place. I have also freed it from the basket. I’ll keep you posted.

Hey I saw this video two years ago and I bought mine from Hawaii. The roots all died they were 3 ft. long and this week it started shooting out a stem to flower! So yay! In Texas it is so hot! I have been using the orchid plant food from Miracle Gro.

About draining the vases. If you take a hose tube and stick that in the vase with water and keep your tumb up the other end stick that in a bucket thats lower than the vase amd release your tumb the capilary effect will make the water starts flowing into the bucket. It can takes a few tries.. you can also suck on the end part of the hose to suck the water up to the top of the vase so it starts flowing. But be careful not to get a mouth full.... i did this to drain water out if the aquarium every week. (You cant tilt a 100 gallon aquarium lol ) its the method used in movies when bad guys steal the gasoline out of the tanks of cars. So i bet if you say that to your husband he knows what i mean. Its easly done all you need is a meter and a halve of hose tubing. And you will never have to lift that vase full of water again.. Good luck hunny. Kind regards rose 🌹

Orchid Whisperer, Thank You for all of your incredible tutorials . I love how you explain every detail making these processes understandable. Very much appreciate all of your videos. I live in Southern California and just rescued my first Vanda from a clearance table at Home Depot. The foliage and roots are healthy. I followed your instructions regarding letting it soak then drying it ou and I have it hanging in a tall clear glass vase just like yours, even purchased some of those ornament hangers on Amazon. . The Vanda does have one spike that has 4 blooms on it however the blooms were wilted when I rescued it Home Depot and they have remained wilted. Is there any chance of revitalizing the current blooms on this healthy spike and plant?

Hello! I went right out to LOWE'S and bought the Copper Fungicide yesterday. It was not expensive and under $7. Thank you so much for that tip. I also bought a baby blue vanda for my new group of students to "oooo and ahhhh" over this year. Hi Amy, Happy New Year 2019 I realize this is an older video however I am going thru your video collection one by one to learn as much as I can about how you care for your orchids! So far I have semi-revived some "dying" orchids and bought a few new ones. Today I went to Walmart and of course had to look at their orchids because it's been a whole week since I was at Walmart looking at Orchids haha and low and behold they had them all stuffed on a clearance table marked half off. They were so sad and pathetic but then I found 2 Vanda's hanging that were also 50% off so today I bought my first 2 Vanda's. One isn't good enough lol. The blooms are all off but the spike is still there. They have some yellowing on the leaves and they don't look great but they don't look terrible either. I brought them home and watched some of the videos and started a 24 soak w/ the Epsom salt/cal mag recipe. I want to keep them in glass vases however the long stringy hanging roots are very long should I just wrap them around the bottom of the vase and fill vase to just below the basket? Do the bigger plump green roots need to be in water as well? I live in Florida and even though it's winter we're having record highs of 79-83 this week. My house is very humid, reading 64% tonight. I want to keep them inside because I am more apt to care for them properly that way. Lastly when you talk about spraying the leaves do we have to be as careful as we do on the phals not to let water collect in the crown? I appreciate your help, I did what I know I shouldn't of done and went "orchid crazy" and it's been keeping me quite busy caring for them.

Happy New Year! I understand when you first find Vandas...it's hard not to get 2!! :) I would keep the long stringy roots on the plant, and I fill the vases until they're right below the basket. In other words, I make sure the bigger plump roots get plenty of water. They'll love the humidity in your house. Also, I don't wet the foliage. I wish you lots of Vanda growing success! Amy

Dear Orchid Whisperer, I just got my first vanda keiki In the mail. I don't think it's very happy. It's not very dark green.. Has a few tiny black spots on one leaf. I re potted it. JJ Chusone i have a Vanda growing outside ( hanging from a tree in a basket). It survived last winter season in North Carolina but this year I will bring it indoors. Vandas do not need any growing media. I spray the roots only with water every day and once a week I spray with fertilizer.

Hello! I live in Georgia and recently bought a Vanda. The blooms are beginning to wilt. Is there a way to tell if it's from too much sun or if they are naturally falling? Also, the leave look like there are lighter green large spots on the leaves. You can really see it when the sun hits the leaves. It doesnt seem like a fungus. Maybe deficiency? Love you videos 💖

Hi. Vanda flowers start to fall once all of them are opened. You may know if your Vanda is a solar lover if its leaves are narrow, if its leaves are wide they will need less direct light.

Hi, Thanks for sharing. Your Vanda's roots looks great. I discovered the Vandas orchids some months ago and already bought 6. I want to treat and serve my Vanda orchids the best way I can. I want to know if you also water the leaves? Also, how long you fertilize your vandas. Do you fertilize only the roots or also the leaves?. I have a problem: I fertilized the roots but after some days, found that the root's tips on several Vanda orchids were burned, dried and were dead. I don't have enough green roots and the majority are dark and soft. What can I do to have more roots and green roots? Hello - Got my Vanda in the basket/ now the roots are over than a yard./ my vase is perfect to hold the basket/ but it's only 14 inches tall ha ha, already sprayed them down but I could bend them for fitting in to the vase to soak. Hi there. Wanted you to know that I have rebloomed my Vanda coerulea. Both the ones that bloomed 18 months ago took a year off but then the biggest of the three from that flask batch surprised me with a beautiful spike of 8 stunning flowers. This is the pure wild-type of the species, with the twisted butterfly petals. Your methods are really solid but I don't do much soaking anymore, I mostly just spray the roots with the RO; I do soak in fertilizer/RO. I enjoy my Vandas so much and I feel I owe it to you! I send everybody who asks over here. Wondering if you have tried Neofinetia/Japanese Wind Orchids in SWC? I'm very tempted but I don't want to lose any. But I LOVE their roots and so I am thinking it could be really advantageous. Hoping you have thoughts. Thank you!

Since you've had them rebloom for you, you're caring for them well and they're repaying you with blooms!:) And thank you so much for the referrals to my channel, BTW. That's the greatest compliment you could give me! I've been thinking about buying a Neofinetia...it's funny you should mention this. I think in the Spring I'll get one or 2. I'm also wondering what to grow them in. (Notice I went straight to buying 2 plants there...lol) The miniature variety of Catts, Dens, and Phals I have really like growing in moss, which means they like a lot of moisture. So SWC should be great for Neofinetias as well. If and when I get one, I'll do a video. In the meantime, if you acquire one and try SWC, please keep me posted. I wish you great success! :)

Dear Amy, I just discovered your channel and I find it very useful. Thank you. I got two vandas in vases from a garden centre. They both have a lot of roots, some thick and others thin. I learned from your video that I should cut off the dead old roots, but quite a lot of the thick roots of these vandas have been bent/broken since they were forced into the vase by the grower. Will bent/broken roots still function as normal? Or should I cut off the broken bits? In addition, should I keep the thin brown roots? They are as thin as nails and I am not sure if they are still alive. Many thanks for your help.

Hi ... what you can do is drill a hole near the bottom of your glass vase. When you need to fill it up, tape up the hole. Then when you want to drain your vase, put your vase in the sink and simply remove the tape. That is what "Michael's Orchids" does for his semi-hydro plants, and he shows that procedure in a few of his videos. He also has a good video about drilling holes in glass containers and what drill bit to buy. Love your channel.

I really enjoy your videos. I have a vanda seedling. I have it in a small glass with a bit of new zealand moss. She is in a southern facing window, but, protected with other plants. Is it ok to have her on top of new zealand moss?

Addicted to your vids, I wonder if you know how soothing, entertaining and delightful your voice is? Question: would you please elucidate more thoroughly and specifically about your CalMag and Epsom salt treatments? I’ve seen reference to it in the comments here and there but without a recipe, detailed instructions or schedule. I think one of my Vandas in semiwaterculture needs something to green it up and maybe this is the solution but I’m not sure how to go about it exactly; thank you for your time. Btw I’m more into the species Vandas and have 3 Vanda coerulea, the original blue species and the sister species V. coerulescens, which is the one that needs greening up. All do seem to be doing well enough but the V. coerulescens is maybe lacking something. Thank you for your time, enthusiasm, kindness and experience.

Hi Bruch! Thank you so much for your kind and thoughtful comment! I just published a video today on Vanda care and the exact fertilizer recipe I've been using this summer. I've had a lot of success with this recipe...I've also added seaweed extract for extra potassium and they are thriving! V. Sansei Blue, the star of today's show, had a magnesium and nitrogen deficiency a few months ago, and this recipe really helped. If the deficiency is pronounced, you might want to give it an extra soak day in about 30 ppm Epsom salts and 70 ppm CalMag until it doesn't show anymore signs of deficiency. If your V. coerulescens is getting ready to bloom, it will definitely be beneficial. Have a great day and happy growing! :)

I love your vids but I need your help ! I grow vandas , but after the flowers bloomed the AIR ROOTS STARTED TO WITHER AND DEHYDRATE , even though I water them 2~3 times a day ! Why is that ?? . I love your channel!! I grow my vandas the same way. I may have missed the details, but do you soak them for 24 hours once a week? Then how often did you soak them with fertilizer half way up the container. Mine are thriving here in Montana and I just got a blue ribbon on one at our orchid show!! I know by watching this video, I am not feeding them enough tho. I just did the foliar feed this morning and will add that to my routine. LOVE your orchids!! You have such a green thumb, wish we were neighbors!

When the weather is cooler or if I notice the roots start looking dry, I adjust accordingly. I soak them with fertilizer after their 24 hour soak, while the roots are still wet. My Vandas receive a lot of light...they require very bright light. I grow mine in my sunroom, which is the sunniest room in my house. If they don't get enough light and fertilizer, the leaves will turn yellow and the Vanda won't thrive. Happy growing and have a great day! :)

Hi John! I just did an update on my Vandas, here's the link: kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=DpIxOpfOQfQ I soak at least the bottom 50% of the roots for 1 soak. I've discovered that I can leave them soaking for 2 or even 3 days like that and they're doing great. Then I let them set dry for 2 days, and let them soak again. When you asked me if 1 day soaking day out of 5 was enough, I decided to try soaking them for longer to see what would happen. They are doing really well! (So thanks for asking me that question! :) I'll be doing another update video soon on the Vandas, I pulled one out of a Magnesium deficiency by allowing it to soak in some Epsom salts and CalMag for 3 days. It greened up, to my amazement! Hope your Vandas are doing well...happy growing!

Hi! If you buy the copper fungicide concentrate, you'll need to dilute it...otherwise, if it's in a spray bottle, you use it directly from the bottle. You can spray it directly on the leaves. I use mine in the morning so that it will dry by noon, so I don't have to wipe away the excess, but you can wipe away the excess if you need to. I use the spray once a week. This video is pretty helpful for me. I just started my Vanda journey. Just for clarification because english is not my Mother tongue: you soak them once a week for 24 hours and spray every day when it is hot. After you soaked them you fill the vase a bit with water and fertilizer for 15 minutes?

Orchids need wet/dry cycles, so you have to watch the roots. When they start turning silver, they're dry and it's time to water. So much of your watering schedule will be determined by your environment, and even the season of the year. That's why it's so confusing....everyone's environment is different. Happy growing! :)

Hi Bobette! I'm still thinking about how much fertilizer to use on my vandas when it gets colder, not as much as what I'm using now. Last February when I bought my first vanda, I was using about 1/4 to1/2 of what I'm fertilizing them with now. It's still very warm here in TN, we're having a prolonged summer. Hi Tammy! Vandas can sometimes come out of their bloom cycles looking tired...especially in the middle of winter. They're not getting the light they so love and thrive on. Spring is coming, and when the days start getting longer it will perk up. Vanda roots grow in the Spring. :) Many blessings to you sweet friend.

Hi Virginia! It's hard to figure out how to grow orchids and travel. I completely understand your dilemma. Mine can go about a week in my environment without being watered. I soak them for 24 hours every 5 to 7 days, depending on the temperature and the weather. I recommend you do a "trial run" while you're at home and you can watch how they react to what you plan on doing while you're on vacation. I wouldn't leave them in semi-water culture for a week, that's too much water for too long. But you could try just the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 of the roots in water and see how that works. I've had several of my subscribers do this trial before they leave, and they learn what to do in their environment to make sure it's right for their Vandas. Kindly let me know why you use the copper fungicide spray. Do vandas tend to get fungus? Are the spots on the leaves fungus? I was told by a vendor that these are "normal" spots, but I do not see any of it on your vandas. Is the copper-spray your non toxic secret? :-) If so I`ll try to get that spray in Europe. Hi Amy, thank you for your very helpful answer. I learned that black spots and black leave-edges are not "normal", but fungus! Couldn´t find the spray so far in Europe, but keep on trying. :-) I read below that Cn Pf keeps her vandas in water beads. I would also like to do that to reduce my work load, but there is a hyhiene-problem with the fact, that the water in the beads gets rotten and spoilt after at least 3 weeks. I wonder what to do then...exchange all the beeds? Hm....seems like a lot of work. :-))

An excellent resource I use is the American Orchid Society's website, aos.org. You can check under the insect section to see what type of insect this is. The orchid definitely needs to be treated with insecticide, because insects can chew the life out of the plant. I would also recommend isolating this orchid from your other plants. The insects can and will go to another plant, so keep it isolated until you're sure it's insect-free. Have a great day!
