The boots poem is genius because it was meant to mimic the torturing thoughts that would repeat through a soldier’s head as they go mad during weeks long marches, with no end in sight. Kipling captured it well, I assume, since it is used for torture trainings lol

The rhythmic lines of the poem are very effective. That should be pleasurable to the ear even if a tense atmosphere is invoked. I suppose listening to it over, and over would obviously be torturous, though. Honestly, I don't know if that is in insult, or a compliment to Kipling, but if he was trying to achieve a certain effect he succeeded.

I’m not one to cry at movies, but I watched Very Scary People’s documentary on him, and couldn’t help crying when I thought of all those people who died. The idea of the children who must have been staring up at their parents wondering what was going on, why the adults were upset, drinking what they were given because they trusted the adults and their parents. The idea of those children in their parents arms, crying about how it hurt and they were scared, asking for help…… I just sat in my room and sobbed. Listening to this recording felt the same.

Maybe it can help to know that cyanide at such dosage would kill you quickly and you wouldn't really feel much pain. That's exactly why it's used as a suicide pill or in assassinations so often. It's very effective at killing you. You could drink this and pretty much die instantly or in the matter of a few seconds. Clearly, the kool-aid solution wasn't a simple afterthought or improvised idea, it was premeditated, basically "if X happens then I will make everyone kill themselves with this" and it's also very clear to me that this guy wasn't a sadist who wanted to inflict pain on his followers but rather a totally deranged individual who believed he was freeing them from a very bleak future so it was never the point for them to die a painful death. Why he didn't drink this himself but rather shot himself asks questions but my theory is he saw this as his failure to protect his community and as such, he didn't deserve to go wherever they were going so he killed himself and in his mind this was a way to make sure he wouldn't go to heaven or whatever he believed in. It was his punishment.

Yes! That’s exactly what I started singing! Napoleon XIV’s a friend of Dr. Demento wrote that song in 1966. Radio stations across the country banned the record after receiving complaints from doctors and institutions claiming that the song “hurt 17:18 their image.” After five weeks, the song dropped from the charts. I used to sing that song in high school in the 80’s after hearing it on Dr. Demento’s late night AM radio station program.

I personally had it happen when I was applying for a job. I am a primatologist, and the job I was writing for or applying for was super competitive and was for a 6 month job in Cambodia for a television show..during that time I was talking in my sleep amd was getting out of bed and just doing random stuff and I never would have known if it wasn't for my ring door bell catching me going outside on night to sit on my porch lol after that I out a motion sensor camera in my bedroom to see what I was doing and i didnt actually get up THAT often, but i WAS talking. There's also a two part episode of "Very Scary People" aired periodically on Headline News (Cable TV) or maybe you can find their streaming service... I don't know... BUT it's also worth a look. Each episode is an hour, so a fairly solid 2 hours of research, experts, interviews with the survivors, and specifically some in depth Q&A with his son, Stephan... ;o)

One old woman survived by hiding under a bed, and I've heard that several more survived by running. Jim Jones had two sons that he'd sent away that day so that they'd survive while he encouraged the suicide and murder of 900 people. What a horrific thing.

Always wonder about Reddit stories. The voice also sounds like a young teenage boy. Probably her son
@IAmPez3 жыл бұрын
I remember when hearing the same story before, that there was a fairly pertinent point that was only very briefly alluded to here. I believe in her original post, she divulged that she slept with a toddler, or very young child, in her bed with her. Knowing that, it becomes more than obvious that the "click" you can hear is actually more of a skin-on-skin "slap" or clapping sound. It would then be perfectly rational to assume that the sound you hear is likely her child playfully "slapping" on her in order to get her attention. The voice(s) you hear are simply her sleep-mumbling whilst in a deeper state, exacerbated by her recent sleep deprivation. Any "expert" that would ever suggest something as categorically definite as to say that the sounds heard were impossible for her or her child to make, is either a terrible expert, or more likely, doesn't exist. Sure, that's not as thrilling as saying it was ghosts or whatever, but honestly, which one is more likely to be reality?
