I read Hitchhikers when I was 14. At that time my two favourite things were Star Wars and Monty Python. Could not have been more perfect for me

I'd like to recommend A Psalm for the Wild Built by Becky Chambers. 147 pages, very character focused, but also glimpses of an interesting world. Robots and humans split ways long ago and now a robot has come back to learn about the humans.

I just finished "Annihilation" and I think the term "mindblowing" was invented for books like this, even though I first watched the movie (back then I did not knew about the book) and still remembered the ending. I am desperate for more narratives around nature. So far I read some gorgeous nature based Fantasy, but I want more nature thought experiments, no matter the genre.

Loved this format! I've read Hitchhikers first three books and love them. Annihilation has been on my TBR for a while now (movie is excellent btw, can't recommend it enough, and they nail the tone) but learning that it has so many similarities to Piranesi (which was my favourite book I read last year) it has been bumped up! Thanks guys!

All Systems Red and the Murderbot Diaries in general are wonderful! I'm autistic and have never related to a character's thought process so much as Murderbot's. I do tend to use it as a palate cleanser too.

"All Systems Red" was so great really loved that. Philip K. Dick's "Do Android's Dream of Electric Sheep?" is a also personal fav; short yet thought-provoking and the predecessor of "Blade Runner" :)

I agree, all 3 of those are must reads. In the spirit of this video: I suggest This is How You Lose the Time War as the 4th book on your 3 book list.

I love that I got an advert for 1984 on audible before this video 😂 All Systems Red is incredible and I have book 5 from the library right now. I’m making my non-sci-fi reading friends read it and so far zero complaints from any of them. All systems Red got a 4.75 Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is phenomenal my mum made me read the first one and then I read the five by Adams, the sixth was written by Eoin Colfer (who wrote Artemis Fowl which both six and his fowl series are on my list to read) I’m also down for you to watch the hitchhikers movie from like 2005 it’s incredible! Hitchhikers got a 5 Annihilation is on my list to see if my library has now but I have my reservations maxed out right now thanks to your bloody channel and your frankly excellent taste. Piranesi is incredible. I’ll let you know when I get to annihilation I also highly recommend Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep as I read it in a few hours and I wanted to reread it as soon as I finished it. Might reread it before the end of the year because I can’t stop thinking about it.

I've seen Annihilation and it's great! Although it's not for general audiences, it's more for cinephiles who like movies that take multiple viewings to fully understand. I haven't read the book so if you guys watch the movie I'll read it. Edit: Would like to add that Slaughterhouse-five by Kurt Vonnegut can be read in a day!

This video came out at the perfect time for me. Just last night I was asking my gf what books to take on vacation and now I believe I have decided on The Hunger of the Gods, The Alchemist (I always read this book on vacation), and All Systems Red. Definitely enjoy this style of video and I can’t wait for the fantasy video.

Oh ! H2G2 is one of my all time favorite. Great recommandation. As for Annihilation... I started it yesterday. It's very "atmospheric", but also very blury as you don't really know what to expect, what the characters are in for, why there is so little trust and camaraderie between the protagonists, ... In my mind I oftenly thought of people going in space/ISS and how the group is built to be fonctionning, and it make me phase out to read this group so untrustworthy. And made me so angry when I realised the psychologist role and technique ! And now I'm hyped for the murderbot bot diaries ! :) Thanks guys

Unfortunately I’ve read all three 😂 I do think out of these the last recommendation is the strongest in its entirety. All systems red had a few slogs, same with Hitchhikers later entries. But the Southern Reach Trilogy is fantastic through and through.

This was a great video format! I've read 2/3. All Systems Red I really enjoyed several yrars ago. I read several more in the series and I felt like they ended up being too much of the same. The first gift my husband gave me while we were dating was a nice 'leather' bound copy of all the Hitchhiker's books, so that has a special place in my heart. I loved the book for it's own sake as well. I've been saying the 2-3 uears now that I want to reread it and I just haven't gotten to it. I watched the movie Annihilation when it first came out and I enjoyed it. I started the book a month or two ago, but lifebwas wierd and I wasn't in the right headspace, so I set it down after only a few pages. I think I'll give it another shot soon though.

Oh man I love annihilation so much, how he writes these broken characters is best in class! The way I sell this book to people is imagine the world is ending and all you can think of is why your marriage failed. Think of what kind of person that is, and that is who Jeff Vandermeer focuses on

I loved All Systems Red! Murderbot is a good series for this in general, all novellas. Also, for some reason I see Murderbot as female, idk why Annihilation is actually getting a fourth book in October😂
@davidranderson15 ай бұрын
Great recommendations! I have a couple thoughts on these books: - The Murderbot novellas are very different from the I, Robot short stories, but one similarity is taking a basic question (What makes someone conscious or a person?) and layering on additional levels of complexity with each story to see how the answer might change. - The Hitchhiker's Guide books pull off a neat trick. They're plotted like wacky sci fi parodies, but really they're a wide ranging satire of modern life, which comes out especially in the dialogue and Guide entries. I have a bit of a counterpoint to the discussion of what leads to a nihilistic viewpoint. I think nihilists are more likely to be disillusioned believers rather than they are to be atheists or agnostics. Non-believers are more likely to think, "If there's no larger meaning to life, than it's not the case that my actions having no meaning. In fact, my actions are the ONLY thing that does having meaning."

Annihilation is amazing. I am about as far from a horror fan as you can get. Somehow, I still really liked it. I think I'll definitely enjoy it even more on my reread. As for the movie, I also haven’t seen it, but I'll totally watch it if you make a video about it. And it will give me an excuse to blaze through the series since I’ve been meaning to. I suppose I should comment on the other two. I love Murderbot, such an amazing series. It's one of the few books I’ve read that actually fits stylistically with being an ebook. I did not like Hitchhiker's Guide though. It had funny moments, but overall it was just too absurdist for my tastes. Discworld strays into that as well though. Discworld humor has like a 50% success rate for me. Hitchhiker's had even less.

As someone who only watched the movie Annialation... I'm just gonna be honest here... I felt like I missed something... and I didn't like it. When Richard mentions non-reliable, it makes sense now why I didn't. I'm not a fan of the non-reliable narrator. Nice list. MurderBot🥰 is one of my faves. 📖🥰📚

All Systems Red: 2,5/ 5. That one book I don't get the hype for at all, quite underwhelming. Hitchikers Guide: 3,25/5. Fun but nothing too special. Discworld is much better imo. Annihilation: have not read but am intrigued.
