I watched several different videos on E90 dash removal / evaporator core removal, and this is by far the best! Thanks for posting it.

Thank you for this video. I didn't even search for it and I need to replace my heater core. I found that even though this is not replacing the heater core, it is the best video out there for it. Will also inspect the evaporator in the process now too.

Props to you sir for the craftsmanship and skill shown in this video and for your contribution to the DIY community. With your video along with ISTA/D I was successful in making this repair on a U.S. version 2008 128i/E82, left-hand drive vehicle. I performed a complete A/C service (condenser, evaporator, compressor) job that took me several days to complete. Original Denso compressor was still working at 178k miles. The Valeo evaporator failure in my case was typical of many. If I may share my experience for others benefit: 1.) You correctly show the heater box and cage firewall screws installed after the cage is completely secure in the interior. DIYer do not be tempted to install these before the interior mounting nuts are tightened. The firewall attachments are with "compensation nuts" that expand when screwed tight. If installed too early it will be impossible to get a proper fit in the interior. 2.) The two 2 styrofoam crash pads mounted to the cage on the drivers side were described as impossible to remove without breakage but in my case the screws could be removed and reattached with a T20 torx bit without damage. What appears to be a blind screw head is in fact a T20. 3.) DIYer may want to thoroughly document the routing of the wiring harness - labeling the plugs, wire routing, and attachment points - before disassembly. It would have saved me a lot of head scratching. The mechanic here clearly knows this vehicle like the back of his hand. Finally all I can say is it was one heck of a job but I'm glad to be able to do the work myself. With videos like this I feel I was able to get a quality job with reliable results plus improvements along the way like the fit of the E82 dash and the glovebox. They are notorious for rattles and creaking at attachment points. After careful examination I attended to 11 points on the dash and 6 on the glove box and trim assembly with carefully placed adhesive felt tabs. The cost of having this done professionally would have been prohibitive. Many thanks - Captain Tim, Tampa, FL

As far as order of operations and technique goes absolutely brilliant the video is also extremely good getting those shots. Taking the time to set it up brilliant. I just completed this took me all weekend. Be careful of the bottom heater core tube hook up. I smashed mine while pushing down on the air box while sitting on the bench. Very delicate things, I bent it back round just used my fingers it hasn't leaked so I guess it's okay.

This is by far the most comprehensive video I've seen for this project. You made it look easy. How long does it take an experienced tech like yourself start to finish? I'll be undertaking this some time in the next few weekends. It's 109 degrees here in northern California and my evaporator gave up... I'd rather spend my weekend in my garage than the $2,000 I was quoted on a car I paid $3,500 for.

Scruffy Hi buddy- I’m thankful for your appreciation. You would be surprised at how some people still manage to say something negative after posting these videos on forums. When I worked at the dealer I could get them done in a few hours. That being said, it was a common job, I knew exactly what tools/power tools I needed & I was at 2 clicks fast forward. It’s definitely something you could tackle over the weekend

I recommend purchasing the evaporator through the dealer with your vin. There are 2 different kinds of evaporators, you don’t want to have your car torn apart only to find out you have the wrong part and the correct one may be 3 days out of stock

@@fernandoosorio4758 you can also just pull the radio. Then the sticker on the heater core is visible with a flashlight you can tell if it's denso or valeo and which one you need to buy.

Most shops in Atlanta will not replace an evaporator core. I found one that would. The estimate was $625 for the core itself (to my knowledge, BMW doesn't even make a core, so $437 for OE by Denso or $213 for OEM, both online prices). Freon and oil are $133. Something that I can't read looks like "SFAC vol" for $125 plus 1.5 hours of labor. There are undisclosed costs of $71 and $20, perhaps for a material loading charge but surely the $625 core is already fully loaded. Labor is 15.5 hours. Labor is a total of 17 hours when including the SFAC vol. The total estimate is $3,500 which I declined. My car is a 2009 328i convertible SULEV, with 75000 miles. All my drivetrain, brakes, suspension, and lighting parts are up to date. Carvana would pay me $5000 as is (broken A/C).

Does it matter which brand evaporator you use as a replacement? I've seen bits and pieces stating it does, but can't really find anything conclusive. Found a few snippets stating you need to know if it's a denso or valeo style system, but all online parts store images look the same to me...Need to get this done and don't want to wait a week for parts with the car disassembled. If so, any suggestion as to figure out which one a car has? I called a around to a few places, gave vin, but all said visual inspection needed... Also, thank you for such a comprehensive DIY!
