This short vid shows you how to tighten and fatten the low end of your mix without making it muddy, as well as showing you how to get your bass line sounding big on ANY system.
The video covers these 4 main points:
1. Tuning your kick to the root note of your track.
2. Fattening and widening the bass (without killing the power).
3. Carving the EQ.
4. Buss processing.

One thing that I think is important to add is that the tuning of the kick in this demonstration isn’t always applicable. If you want your bassline to be more prominent in the subs, and you are applying less of a high pass to your bass, (and in which case more so to your kick) you don’t want the kick to be the fundamental as the tone of the kick, or the thump will clash. If you have a track that has a more prominent sub in the bassline, then you want the kick to be in key, but not on the fundamental, a third, forth, or fifth (above) is usually the answer in this case. Totally material dependant but important to consider. You can do the fundamental in this case as well but the kick needs to be quite heavily high passed which can lead to a lot less impact. The most important thing is to learn how to decipher whether the track is oriented to the kick or bass being more prominent and how to work around each scenario, which is difficult because it’a sometimes subjective, and very much based on the material. Can be a very common amateur mistake.

I appreciate you for NOT pausing in between clips where you’re trying to show the before and after. A lot of times in other tutorials it’s harder to hear the changes because they pause for 3 seconds 🤷🏻‍♂️ and then go “before- pause 3 seconds, after”

Thanks for the video! I really like the technics described here. My only concern is the audible distortion heard in a moment you add a compressor. I really think viewers should take their time to learn about sine waves addition and subtraction, as it really makes a huge difference in the low end. For example: - If kick and bass are a bit off phase, it will result in a weird looking waveform. It'll ruin the bass eventually. - If you apply EQ, it will cause phase shifts in some frequency regions. - If bass and kick start clipping at any stage of mixing, the whole low end would be ruined by distorted waveform - you can't then use your headroom (loudness) properly. - Getting a solid bass foundation is crucial, as all higher frequencies will later be added on top of that fat bass sine wave. - If you apply compression with too fast attack and release, it will cause sound glitches as a sine wave would be cut too fast. - If your bass is playing different notes, they will have different loudness (higher notes tend to be louder), and you'll need to control the bass notes-related volume. So I just want to say that there are many other things to take into consideration while using these techniques. Getting a nice low end is still quite a task for myself and I wish everyone learns how to produce it properly.

Excellent video/explanation ! One question. You are sending the kick and bass to a separate track (K+B Buss) that you created. Can't you achieve the same by means of grouping the kick & bass tracks into a group track by means of the group tracks feature in Ableton or is there a difference ?

Hi, at which frequencies do you have to lowcut your kick and bass? When I don't lowcut, then the sub (0-30hz) is often overwhelming on headphones, creating headphone earache. When I lowcut it (at 30,40 ot 50hz) then it's much better, but it's sounding very thin then. Where to lowcut, and at which freqs (hz) to warm up the bass frequencies? 50-100/120hz? Which exactly? Thanks!

hmmm, I've never thought of bussing the kick and bass together since I always send the kick to a drum bus along with the snares and all other percussion (I produce Afrobeats, so there's a ton of other percussion besides the kick). I wonder what the pros and cons are of doing it either way
@BarRashi
@BarRashi 3 жыл бұрын
this may be a strange question but hope u can answer, since we don't want frequencies bumping into each other, why not make the kick a different note than the bass? lets say on the same scale.. so they won't fight on that area in the spectrum? I mean.. we cut off parts from the eq to let one another stick out a bit but why not just put them on different places so we don't have to cut out so much?

Can someone explain to me how putting the kick and bass on the same root note stops fighting frequencies? Surely that’s puts them in exactly the same frequency range, unless your an octave up which would sound weak. Am I missing something? Great tutorial
@EDMTips
@EDMTips 4 жыл бұрын
Great question; answer is...sometimes it doesn't sound better, and further processing is required to make them gel without masking. However, having a kick...say... 4 semitones above the root of the track, for example, can result in dissonance in the low frequencies which - more often than not - results in a flabby, muddy mess.
