I'm an electronic technician and there's one more thing that's I want suggest the interferences between some couples of nearby electronic devices can affect the wifi and internet speed quality that's why we have to keep away the modems and routers in clear place not close to the appliances like microwaves TVs or refrigerators ! Additional tips for improving WIFI speed: 1. For cable modems specifically, pull the wire out for 30 seconds - some "provided" cable modems don't actually reboot when you hit the "power" switch they just block data. 2. For older routers consider replacing the factory firmware with something like OpenWRT. 3. Don't rely on WIFI bridging instead, run a network cable, between your main router and any additional routers in your setup - note: you should also enable spanning tree protocol on all routers before doing this. 4. If you have multiple WIFI "routers" check which ports are used you should only use the "WAN" port on your main router (the one connected to the cable modem) all the routers should be connected together via the LAN ports - you will need to ensure only your main router is running DHCP

Not sure what the situation is like where you are, but my internet provider will cap the line speed if they detect the router being switched off at regular intervals. They interpret it has the router losing connectivity for one reason or another, so cap it at a lower speed to see if it makes the connection stable, not knowing that it is being manually restarted.

Another reboot option is what I do. I have it on a power strip. Flip the rocker switch at it likes the modem, router, and network storage drive all at once. Turn it on and the modem usually takes the longest but tyre other devices will go ahead and contact to the network devices. The router will wait patiently for the modem to finally finish and then connect thus bringing everything back online.

@JosephGarza You said, “Shut it off at night when your sleeping for an hour…”. Did you really mean to say, “Shut it off at night for an hour when you’re sleeping…”? Try to always pay attention when forming a statement; phrase structure and punctuation are very important - and often crucial - components of composing. Not trying to be critical, just trying to offer a little helpful grammatical advice. Please don’t be offended. Thanks!

None of the laptops in the store had an Ethernet socket. Set up my new one on WiFi. Sandra complained her video on You Tube had stopped. I had all the TVs set to Ethernet via the power cables - but I found every TV had been reset to WiFi. I got a USB-to-Ethernet adaptor after that, AND set all the TVs back to 'Wired'. This also sorted out the 'out-of-range' situations, with error messages that literally no-one knew the meaning of. The only people using WiFi here now are casual visitors. They need a password to get in, but with no WiFi-booster in use, this only works here.

The one thing that wasn't mentioned is when you reset your modem or router regularly it helps to protect you from hackers. When you do this the equipment sets a new IP address so it no good for any hacker that has found your system. Its like moving without leaving a forwarding address.

Most likely because it's not correct. The there are 2 options for the local IP address. (The local address is a Public IP address) Depending on your provider you will either have a fixed IP address or a DHCP address. If it is fixed you will always have the same Public IP address. If it is a DHCP address the address is allocated from a pool provided by your service provider. You are given an IP address on a timed lease. Normally about 1 day. But can be in few minutes when service providers are doing maintenance on their equipment. You will get a lease extension as long as you request that address before the lease expires. When you ask for a new IP address after the device is powered on if your lease is still active you will get your previous IP address. In most cases even if the lease has expired when you request a new DHCP IP address you will get your old one as long as it has not in the intermediate period been given to someone else. This is the majority of cases, but dependant on the Service Providers equipment and FW versions of the DHCP service.

resting your router/modem does nothing except make more work for you if there things you need to set up (like DNS addresses and such) ... as Brian explained, there are internal IP addresses and external IP addresses .... the rest of the world only cares about your external IP address, in almost every scenario there is nothing you can do to reset this IP address, only your provider can manipulate this address. sometimes you can trick the system into granting you a new address by leaving your modem unplugged overnight or longer but that was back in the day with old security protocols and only on certain types of systems ... as new tech gets put in and companies want to implement new security standards and big brother still wants to keep tabs on you and what your doing, i guarantee that you will not be able to manipulate your own external IP ... if you could then every hacker and terrorist would be using it to hide themselves ...

I love some of your suggestions. I myself have tried the daily reboot option. However, my first attempt was with a smart lock. I found that when I used this method the smart lock failed because the internet went down when (of course) it switched the router/wifi combo off. When this happened the smart switch didn't come back online to switch the router/wifi back online. So I would suggest only use the mechanical timers in this scenario.

You are my new best friend..lol..I grew up on a farm waaay back in the sticks,the mountains of east TN to be precise. So we were too poor for electronics. Now that I'm in charge of my own family & make enough to have a little expendable income. I've developed an obsession with tech gadgets of all kinds.Having someone to turn to for advice when I'm lost is great.so glad I found your channel.

Question. If I use a smart plug to restart the modem, once the wifi signal stops to the plug, how would it be able to restart the modem? Hope this makes sense.

I create system restore points on a regular basis. If you encounter a computer problem & all else fails, a system restore will often solve it. It's best to have a fairly recent restore point.

Be very careful using a smart plug to be a timer for your Internet connection! No Internet means no cloud, could mean no smart plug, and so could result that it won't switch on your Internet again. Some smart plugs can continue with their schedule when offline, some don't. For example, how does an offline smart plug know when sunset is today?
@LironSegev
@LironSegev 3 жыл бұрын
most good plugs store the schedule on the actual device itself and don't rely on an internet connection just to power on and off. It saves the network ID too so as soon as the router is back it will reconnect to it. If it didn't do these things, every single time you pull it out of the wall socket or have a power failure you would need to reset it all up. You don't.

You are right, I had mine on a smart outlet. I have wi fi in a remote location to operate cameras and lights. I'm typically at that location once a week. It would sometimes go offline when I was away. So I set up the smart plug to turn it off at midnight for 10 minutes everyday. First time it went off it wouldn't come back on because it had no wi-fi. It was off until I returned to the location and manually turned the outlet back on. Lesson learned. I had some old mechanical timers, and put one of those on it, problem solved. Oh, and to respond to Liron, the wi fi outlet does keep the info, I don't have to reset it every time the power is off, it just won't respond to the schedule without wi fi.

Great videos' and information. But could you adjust the sound level of your thetech guy splash screens that keep popping up. The sound level is way louder than your voice. Keep up the great work, as your help is much appreciated.

Little bit of oversight on the smart plug idea…I may be wrong but wouldn’t it stop working once the router is powered off?

I have a mechanical lamp timer that turns off my modem and routers (IOT and internal network are separate.) at 2 AM when we're in bed, until 2:15, the shortest interval the timer allows. I have very few internet connectivity problems.

I have a Tenda wifi router which has a great app that allows reboot straight from the app. The modem unfortunately has to be restarted manually. And for whatever reason, I find that occasionally I need to also disconnect the broadband cable that comes from the wall from the modem as well as the power.

Great content. I subscribed. Gonna try these router tips. Only critique. Your video scene transitions are too loud and the white background flashes to bight and hurts my eyes. Black backgrounds are less shocking. Why send send/flash so much light when it doesn't contain any information? Thanks, -Dave

Spectrum locks their modems, so good luck checking for updates or putting in your own firewall rules. My new modem won't even let me use the WPS button, it's been locked out! I'd like to turn Spectrum off forever, but sadly the only alternative where I live is even worse.
