My dad taught me how to soldier when I was about 8 years old. I’m in my 50s now. Yep, you know what you’re doing. This is a great skill to have and you never know when you’re going to need it, for things that you never thought you would need it for!. Great job as always teaching things that are valuable other than rc stuff

Awesome video 👍 Pro tip: after you have remove isolation of a wire. Twist the wire in the same direction as the wire is already twisted. Then flux and tin it 🙂 The twist make the wire easier to solder to e.g. a connector.

Thanks - good point! I did twist it but didn't mention it in the vid whoops

Great vid Hayley, as always! So many folks are intimidated by soldering, this video will help a lot for sure. And yes, a point I always like to make.... spend the money and get a good soldering station. It's a game changer. It is really hard to get good results when you don't have enough heat. 😉
@MrGoat73
@MrGoat73 23 күн бұрын
I’ll second that. Always get the highest power iron you can. Work quicker, less heat transfer then. And get a good soldering “helping hands” station. I always struggle with battery plugs! HATE doing them, especially on a live battery!!

Probably one of the best soldering guides I’ve seen. Thank you RC girl 😊 it looks so easy when you do it. I always struggle since I beleive you always need another hand. But my heart breaks when you remove the deans plug with an xt60 😂😂 just kidding.

Good video. I always struggle with soldering to the motor without making a mess. Lots of flux is definitely the key!

I've wasted multiple soldering iron to Oxidization which means the iron tip turns black permanently. Since then I use a damp cloth to wipe the tip now and then and always cover the tip with lead. Never leave the tip exposed or they will get oxidized.
@RCGirl
@RCGirl Ай бұрын
Yeah good reminders! I didn't go into detail about iron care/maintenance in this video, but I definitely clean the tip every time before putting it in the holder. And tin before storing it.

Great vid! I would recommend using a much larger tip with a flat spot on the soldering iron for larger diameter wire and joints, it will transfer heat more quickly. You'll find the small tips will loose heat too quick and stick to the joints. Also best to place the iron underneath the wire for a few seconds and touch the solder on the top side of the wire. Also try not to apply too much solder to the wire or take too long to make the joint as the solder will wick up into the wire under the sleeving making the wire stiff, especially if you need the wire flexible at the connection.

You mentioned it several times but can’t be emphasized enough. Use plenty of flux. It will make soldering so much easier. Rosin core solder just isn’t enough. I’m sure somebody will chime in with when you need it and when you don’t, but I always clean the flux from my solder joints when done using isopropyl alcohol.

Excellent tutorial video, Haley! Although, I've been using solder with flux already in it, I had no idea how much it helps to have additional solder as well! I think I'll be much better at soldering now, thanks to you! Awesome video, as always!

Best Solder is 62% Sn 36% Pb 2% Ag solder as it has a slightly higher electrical conductivity, cooler soldering ~200°C and cleaner result (shinier / harder skin). Best thing about solder is you only need to buy the best quality ONCE. 500g roll will last you your life time. Kester is brilliant and yes I did buy a roll from Asia and I used 1cm to discover it was pure turd. It's now a paper weight.

Your solders on the XT60 and motor don't look good, don't flow out enough If you use a larger tip (3 - 5 mm) you get better heat transfer.
