3 Songs that use the “5 7 8” metalcore riff, 578 refers to the frets/notes used to make this sort of sound with the heavy palm muting on the low E string, how many songs have you heard use a riff similar to these songs? A lot I’d bet,
First 2 songs are in Drop D tuning (DADGBE) and the 3rd is in Drop C (CGCFAD), and I’m using @stltones Tone Hub Plug In, with the Machine Preset “Walk In Hell Lead 2”, using a Scarlet 2i2 Interface by @wearefocusrite into GarageBand
#trivium #ascendancy #avengedsevenfold #wakingthefallen #asbloodrunsblack #allegiance #roadrunnerrecords #hopelessrecords #mediaskarerecords #ibanez #ibanezguitars #stl #stltones #tonehub #ernieball #ernieballguitarstrings #focusrite #scarlet2i2 #jimdunlop #jazziii #guitar #guitarist #metal #metalcore #578

big fax. i couldnt get into this music for a little as a kid who had heard SOTS first and just heard modern metalcore as "at the gates worship" lol. stuff is obviously good on its own but yeah it's so heavily influenced that I literally couldn't unhear it as a 15 y/o
@tshred666
@tshred666 2 ай бұрын
@@modernlifeisadamit’s funny because even as a kid I thought SOTS was overrated and that their previous records were better. My main gripe back then as it is now with most of the SOTS inspired bands is the over compressed production, and in the case of those a7x and trivium records, Matt’s vocals. They’re both good vocalists now but back then they were god awful

it's crazy how all of these riffs were invented in the 90's by Dark Tranquility and In Flames and hundreds of bands built careers essentially covering Swedish melodeth with better guitar tones.

provided you are on a drop tuning (should be D here but works exactly the same for every drop tuning) what 5th, 7th and 8th fret on the A-string in conjunction with the open E-string (which is dropped so not an E but D for drop D and so on) amounts to is basic minor sound. The open string that gets played along is the keynote. The 5th fret on the A-string is the same note but an octave higher (thats standard metal; doulbing the keynote) and then you add in a major second and a minor third (which adds the minor sound). Another interesting note in this context is the note A which you find on the open A string and in case of a drop-d-tuning on the 7th fret of the E-string (which is dropped to D in open). A is so interesting cause that is the fifth in the key of D minor and is basically interchangeable with the keynote and is typical for metal. And ofc you play that a lot too in these songs. So yeah. Pretty common.Basically every metal song thats ever written similar i would say. edit: obviously there is a lot you can change musictheorywise. Like, for example swap the major second for a minor second (play 6th fret A-string isntead of 7th fret). That would move the sound from basic minor to phrygian which sounds totally weird (but awesome in my opinion).

The 5-7-8 riff is a very specific thing and a little deviation is okay but not every melodic death metal riff is a 5-7-8 riff. Songs that use that riff specifically are Unholy Confessions like you mentioned, Attack Attack's What Happens If I Can't Check My Myspace When We Get There, Asking Alexandria's Not The American Average, Chiodos' There's No Penguins In Alaska and many more that have that same melodic motif.

No, more like Swedish Melodeath. At The Gates - Slaughter of the Soul (the album) is the obvious source. Even though it's just a basic minor shape, but that definitely inspired the later metalcore stuff the most.

Too bad guitarist don't know music theory. Natural minor. It can be in a key that sits well with the open strings of a guitar in that position. Case closed. Its not inherently "5,7,8". Try a different tuning and see where you find yourself.
