Greetings from Finland. I drive a 91 Caprice Classic and my dad just bought himself a 93 Grand Cherokee with the 5.2 but with a newer model transmission and we love our 90's American cheap luxury cars, and I just wanted to say that the Fifth Avenue is one of my favourite cars, and I am so jealous for how little money it went for. Both the Caprice and Jeep we bought were purchased for around the 3500€ mark. Loving this series so much.

Only thing it'll need for sure is the vicious coupler in the transfer case, the vehicle display repaired (think there's usually a bad solder joint that causes the flashing), and I heard a squeaky pulley that needs replacing.. Other than that just the normal maintenance stuff that hasn't been replaced or serviced yet and she'll be good to go 👍👍

The 5.9L trans was beefed up, but still required an annual flush and filter change to keep it running. This is especially if you're out doing Jeep things on the trails and power-pulls on the streets. Kinda wish we hadn't sold ours. 275,000 on the original motor and still an absolute beast.

Fun video. For every day use, pretty hard to beat a 3800 Series II. There's still no other large, comfy sedan that gets that sort of mileage. It was always surprising about those big W bodies that if you go the speed limit or under, you can get right up on 30 MPG. Super impressive. Very reliable, simple and easy to fix when they need to be, parts are available everywhere. That Grand Cherokee 5.9 is for sure the more interesting/rare vehicle of the 3. But the 5th Avenue in that red color also holds a special place. My grandma had one years ago. Super comfy boat. It was replaced with a 98 Grand Marquis eventually, which she really really loved.

I worked in prototype in the late 80s and would prep M Body Chryslers for crash tests. We needed to take the front passengers seats out for the tests. As a result we were allowed to take them for personal use. I used a couple for my deer blind. I had one that I sat in for 25 years and only stopped doing so due to selling the property. I would hope that the seat is still there and being used.

Brendan: The Jeep 5.9's benefit greatly from bolt ons. The Mopar chip is supposedly worth something like 30 hp, and any good tune should be worth equal or better. Full 3" exhaust will net serious power, as will an intake and ported kegger or M1 manifold. There are 5.9's with heads/cam and bolt ons into the 13's. Something to do with all that money you didn't spend!

The automatic used in the 5.9L limited grand cherokee was the same as the one with the 5.9L gas engine dodge ram. It was a 46RE, difference is the started bolted on the opposite side on the grand cherokee vs the dodge ram. The 5.2 grand cherokees used a 44RE and it wasnt up to the task. The big killer of the chrysler RE, RH transmissions was the thrust washers they used between the planet carrier and the sun shell. They wear out and it loosens the clearances and tolerances and the transmission would eat it self up, basic transmission fluid changes held off the inevitable for a while, if they would have used thrust bearings, it would have been a much stronger transmission I own one that is the same color as yours, but I dont have the running boards though

The Jeep's flashing computer just means it lost power and needs the time set. The false errors on it are almost always caused by bad solders, so if you know someone who knows what they're doing that's an easy fix. I just ripped mine out until I get it taken care of lol. Especially cool because the 5.9s can still go off-road and tow, unlike the later SRT8 models. Fantastic vehicle that'll pass anything but a gas station.

Comfy, pleasant environment for long trips, powerful(ish), off-road capable, and decent looking. Paired with consistent electrical issues, built in money-suck repairs (the one that stands out for me was replacing the radiator because a plastic drain plug broke), super shitty assembly, bad paint (yours lived in a garage), inconsistent textile matching, and so on.

Oh that Jeep brings back memories. I owned a 1997 GC Laredo in 2008 - bought it for £700! Drove like all Merican cars, that is to say bloody awful. BUT the stereo was incredible. Probably one of the best sound systems I've ever experienced in all the 53 cars I've owned. Sadly it failed the MOT spectacularly and I had to sell it for parts. Happy memories tho :)

I've had 3 ZJs and 1 WJ all with the 4.0. my parents had a 95 5.2 limited that's started the love of the Grand Cherokee in my family. Ah, that creaky plastic interior ❤️

I owned a 1989 Bonneville with the 3800 V6. It was a great car. I definitely got 30 mpg on road trips with four or five people.

@@Welcometofacsistube Probably because everyone is amazed that the Cordoba hasn't turned into a pile of rust... My dad's last purchase as a Chrysler employee was a 1981 Dodge Aries K car - wish he had bought a LeBaron instead, it would have been so much more comfortable for family trips. The backseat of the K car sucked for three people, even though we were kids.

Contrary to a previous statement...the 5.9 Limited NEVER was available in the color purple. It was ONLY offered in three colors; Stone White, Bright Platinum (silver-ish), and Deep Slate (black). Never with pinstripes or any other graphics. Also, they only wheels they came with were the silver painted aluminum Ultra Stars. Back in 2000, my wife were looking to get a WJ with the Qudra-Drive system. When I was doing my research I stumbled upon the existence ZJ 5.9 Limited! We ended up picking up a Deep Slate 5.9 Limited. We still have it to this day...all original! Twenty-two years and 253,000 miles later, I still get enjoyment from turning the key and hearing the factory exhaust sound!

I just got a 95 riviera with the 3800 series ll I can 100% confirm it gets 30mpg on the freeway. 70k miles it needed a serpentine belt and one fuel line as it was spraying like a aerosol can

I loved my 5.9 ZJ ... looked just like this one. Three problems I had with it - AWD viscous coupling was going out, so it would bind in tight turns. I had to rebuild the front diff (somebody else did the same and they overtightened the central shaft nut - took some doing to take off (working outside in early season snow - not fun). Spark plugs or ignition related problem at high RPM - felt like a miss on hot days. During the winter, it made it up the ski areas in style - nice torque, but so much heavier than the WJ that followed it. Incidentally the WJ's frames were co-engineered with Porsche to make the stronger and lighter (but they didn't have the 5.9).

Important to note that the M body Chryslers were also body on frame, the last of them for Chrysler. The unibody LH platforms (Intrepid) replaced them, but had a few year gap.

Yup the Dodge Dynasty/Chrysler Imperial had to fill the void for a few years before Intrepid/New Yorker/LHS debuted.

I had one of 1800 1990 Olds 98 Touring Sedans with the supercharged 3800. On 93 octane, that beast got 34 mpg at 80 mph! It's downfall was it had been a Wisconsin car and the unibody undercarriage rusted away.
