You want all the secrets normally I do not tell these things to anyone but when you give so much the universe gives back so here is how the story goes jimi was recording stairway to heaven and wanted to make his guitar sound as close to a medieval lyre guitar as possible so when he heard the supro 1690 he say it had that perfect tinsely sound that he could not get from any other amp so he recorded the intro to stairway with the 1690 stock then because they did not have that much money to go out and buy gear he moded the amp for the rest of the album

Great demo. Love that you played totally relevant styles for these types of amps! They all have their "thing" but yet are all unmistakably "SUPRO"!Dig em all!!!I think I lean toward the Black Magick, simply for the slightly thicker gain... But the sweet picking "ping" in the top end on the Coronado has its own tastiness to it, as well!!! Sounds like it would be phenomenal in a full band mix!Cheers!!

Yeah, i was also very skeptical about smallish amps because in forums and youtube has the bad reputation of being "boxy", but after i've heard some of the iconic 50's Fender "tweed" models, i could say that the typical "small amp = boxy" thing is not true, most of the "tweed" amps are very transparent sounding, even with humbuckers, and i can say that "boxiness" is more about circuitry and/or speaker type, because even big amps can do sound nasal and thuddy, by example, Marshalls and Orange amps tends to sound like that, but isn't just the circuitry that is designed to have that characteristic "mid hump" but also because most of them uses ceramic Celestions that are very mid focused, also, some big "brownface" and "blackface" Fenders had some boxiness on them, even if they had a mid scoop and it was because some had Oxford speakers, that were know to sound very mid focused.

Small combos have always been the way to go. The 300 watt monstrosity’s are great if you want everyone at the club to wear earplugs and lose all the top end and definition…. You have to remember guitar players are usually dorks not artists and they have really dumb opinions on things.

Jimmy didn't mod the amp until it was smashed. Led Zeppelin 1 was recorded with an original 2X10 1958 Coronado. Those of us who have heard an original healthy Coronado have been amazed at the amount of crunch these amps have. Great overdrive and amazing compression. These amps have 4 different inputs that are voiced differently. "Communication Breakdown" is input number one which is voiced very midrangey. The second channel has an insane amount of gain too. Somebody eventually smashed the amp and damaged the 2x10 baffle board and he had a single 12 Oxford with a new baffle board installed. Whether the solo on Stairway was done with the new 12 installed or still the original 2x10 only Jimmy knows (or doesnt care to remember). Im guessing the amp could have been smashed sometime in the early 70s. But all those sessions he did in the 60s were done with that Coronado 2x10 and/or a Vox amp.

Great demo as always. The Dual-Tone may be even closer to Jimmy's tone that the Coronado, it's the 24 watt 1x12 combo with the odd 6973 power tubes. I also believe LZ1 was predominantly recorded with a Telecaster and possibly a tonebender fuzz (or was that LZ2?)

the break up is more fierce on these amps but they put me in mind of an early to mid 70s ORANGE HEAD very brittle but with enough bottom end to balance it these amps would be perfect for someone who likes their blues heavy and bright say a tele player who craves sustain and who has a hard pick attack. nice one johan.

Thank you so much for making this comparison video. I've been eyeing both the Black Magick and the Coronado for a while to replace my aging Vox AD50, but I haven't been able to jam on them. I am kinda leaning towards the Coronado, but I'm a huge Zeppelin/Jimmy Page fan so, I'm kinda torn. Does the Coronado have any issues with the lower end of the midrange or the bottom end? I play lead guitar, but I also like my tone to have a nice rounded bottom end. With them two 10" speakers I would think it would have a brighter sound with very limited bottom. The Black Magick just seems to have too much gain.
@JohanSegeborn7 жыл бұрын
+Fezz Bonnet Thanks! I actually think the Coronado sounds the most like Zeppelin 1 and the Black Magick like Zeppelin 2. I think the Coronado has a balanced tone, with enough lows

That 15 lends a nice open bottom end. Would be great for some Creedence or Tony Joe white. Bet it was nice with the ever lovely choco strat :-). I hear what you say about the tens vs the 12 for the zeppelin sound. There's so many potential variables. Roger mayer says he was making Jimmy treble boosters and such like well back into his session days.
@JohanSegeborn8 жыл бұрын
+PoJoWo yeah, there is indeed an enormous amount of variables that probably potentially could get Z1 tones from 1x12 as well as 2x10

Thanks! Yeah I’ve heard that he put a Celestion Greenback in it. I have since I did this video learned that he didn’t use the Supro on the first album though, but a Vox Super Beatle according to this book www.amazon.com/Light-Shade-Conversations-Jimmy-Page/dp/030798575X
@thekitowl6 жыл бұрын
Johan Segeborn I’ve found a picture of Jimmy ,with the super Beatle using Rickenbacker cab’s. If you look between his legs you will spot the Supro. I don’t think we can rely to much on what Jimmy says. He’s either vague or doesn’t remember. JPJ in an interview said Jimmy used a variety of small amps in the studio. I personally think he used one amp for rhythm & others for solo’s & riffs as they all sit sonically together. www.pinterest.co.uk/pin/559431584936182311/
