A couple things I find helpful on the carving drills is a variable amount of bow draw to tighten and widen the circle as well as your gaze more or less to the inside the axis.

All excellent drills, thanks for sharing. Especially loved hearing you talk about power transfer, but with technique as a foundation, rather that the other way around. I'd also suggest torso rotation for power as an alternate drill to the hip-thrusts, equally if not more applicable for boofing (and just generally vital for boat control).

Oh boy, this takes me waaaay back. Remember learning white water kayaking with the university kayak club in my old Perception Dancer back in the 80's. We had a game of 'Candlestick' on a lake and had three successive instructors try to tag me, as soon as one flagged the next would come at me. They were all paddling forward and I was paddling backwards. Will have to try #2 this summer in the Bliss-Stick Blitz Special. Sits too low to try #3. Good to see the new yak in use. The smiles when you reviewed it ....

Excellent building block drills to practice. Understanding and taking correct advantage of “buoyancy energy” and “spin momentum” are vital for learning proper boat control and advanced skills

Great tips, Ken. Thank you. You show very good edge control, and I've been trying to get more comfortable with that before moving into much bigger water. Having a high volume boat, I'm not sure how much tip #2 applies (like you said), so I've got more to learn, so thanks again.

awesome video and great drills. to elaborate on drill #1 if you want a more advanced continuation that when mastered gives even more boat control you can try carve balanced on the outside edge of your kayak while still paddling forwards only on the inside of the turn. it will feel very weird at first however a kayak naturally wants to turn towards its raised edge you just have to let it. the reason you can carve on your inside edge is more because of torso rotation and the right amount of pressure on your strokes so you never fully kill your turning momentum as well as applying pressure on the inside of the boat with your hips and knees.

Yay for the buttock selection aspect. A really useful thing to show beginners, way before we get to raising the knee - it separates lean (beginner falls in) from edging (boat does the work)! The adding power to the inside paddle is "just" a canoe J stroke applied for correction - there's that little flick as the paddle passes the hip and the stoke is completed - worth practising in a Canadian!

Hey! I’m new to kayaking and just moved to Alaska. I want a kayak I can do a lot of miles in but still go through class 2 or 3 (eventually). Have you done any videos of taking performance touring kayaks through rapids? Thanks for any info you can provide!
@PaddleTV6 ай бұрын
I haven't done any videos about specifics techniques for doing it... but here's a video that might help - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rnq5gYl6hd9op68

Can these be done with a Greenland paddle? Or should one such paddle not even be used when whitewater kayaking?
@PaddleTVАй бұрын
Greenland paddles and whitewater aren’t a great combo.
