Dogs are such fascinating animals. Orion had no search and rescue training, no handler, and had been separated from his owners. And yet, he pulled off the rescue of 37 people. I wonder what was going through Orion’s head as he was pulling those people out of the mud and water. Was it pure instinct? Or was there something else going on? Either way, what a big goddamn hero.

The first tragedy took place in my country; I was 16yrs old when it did. This was the first cult I knew about before Jonestown! Thank you for covering it! For the longest time; even up until now, it was called Kibweteere's cult coz he was the 'face' & main speaker/recruiter. But further investigations showed Mwerinde was the real mastermind & the one pulling all the strings; Kibweteere had more of the charisma & money. Uganda has a tendency of easily 'moving on' or sweeping things under the carpet. Thats the reason the leaders have never faced justice. After a few months of anger & uproar, life as we know it has to continue......sadly! PS: You did do your best with the pronunciation of their names!

Thank you for bringing these to attention. I knew about the Vargas landslides from a geology perspective, because those are probably the most catastrophic landslides in modern history, but even there I only know of the city of Vargas built on the delta of past landslides - a common problem in mountainous terrains, see the city of Tahoma - and didn't realize just how many settlements were engulfed, nor the human z(or canine) element and aftermath. It's reslly valuable that you're digging beyond the major stories that a lot of disaster channels tend to cover sooner or later (but you were one of the first). Other than the most infamous stories like Bhopal and Lake Nyos, news from non-English-speaking or southern hemispheric countries is all too often a footnote or crowded out by sports and pop culture coverage in the English-speaking north (presumably in Oz and NZ as well).
