It was one of the deadliest killing sprees ever perpetrated by a lone gunman, and it happened in the unlikeliest of places, the tranquil idyllic setting of Tasmania's historic Port Arthur. Evil wears many faces - Martin Bryant looked like an angel, but in reality he was anything but...

I actually know a guy like this. Fortunately for him (and everyone around him) his habit of writing in extreme and lengthy detail about every aspect of his life in his blog meant that he was discovered before he got around to executing his plans, and received care. He is now living a normal (if assisted) life. He'll likely never be in line for a Nobel prize in physics, but he'll also likely never end up the subject of a video like this, and I'm going to call that a win.

Honestly it's sad about the mentally ill guy too, such a waste of life, like I don't understand why the father bought a gun to his mentally and intellectually disabled son, did he even fully understand what a gun could cause. If people would have noticed this guy before and got him help.

@@teijaflink2226because in Australia we grew up with guns. We also know he didn’t buy him a bloody gun that was used in a shooting. I don’t think a small pellet gun is hardly bad parenting. I don’t know about u but with food shortages many ppl are learning to grow food and fish, hunt to avoid the starvation agenda that’s coming. Using a gun to catch prey is a lot easier then with my bare hands.

If someone's behaviour is odd and they fail to get on with people, the last thing you should do is buy them a gun. In this case he had displayed his violence at a young age by breaking his toys. At least one the the mass shootings in the US had a similar story, uncle thought he was an odd loner so bought him a gun. There seems to be an attitude of "It'll make a man of him", give him confidence, make people look up to him etc.

The government not accepting responsibility for their failures and instead taking it out on everybody else? That's an absurd concept like completely screwing up a quarantine programme then forcing an entire state into 200 days of lock down! Absurd like invading an middle eastern country on the made up premise of weapons of mass destruction! This is a misrepresentation. The locals don’t get interviewed because they spoil thee narrative. Non of the locals identified Martin.Martin wasn’t in Port Arthur until later. It never went to trial. The local coroner bought a 9 body mortuary ambulance 2weeks before. There’s so much evidence for Martin’s innocence it’s outrageous. Locals reported a man wearing a woman’s wig shooting with military precision. Also a politician said in parliament before this that “there’ll be no gun control in Australia until there’s a massacre in Port Arthur. A couple of interesting facts, after Bryant was admitted to hospital, the nurses there made sure that his vitals were checked hourly. Bryant didn't sleep well at the hospital. Bryant is also held in solitary confinement at Risdon Prison, because he would not survive long in the general prison population (they don't like child murderers...).

As a professional who has worked with individuals with learning disabilities and Autism for nearly 3 decades I just want to draw attention to the fact that there has been zero linkage shown between these conditions and homicidal urges. Mental health and terrible parenting/abusive home life is what shapes the impulses in individuals like Bryant. I just wanted to point this out because in your early narration it sounded like you were giving equal weighting to a mental health condition like paranoid schizophrenia and a learning difficulty like autism, and while I am sure you didn’t mean to imply that both conditions could be behind Bryant’s actions, it did kind of come out like that in the video. Bryaht’s issues ultimately were rooted not in in his mental health and learning difficulties but the piss poor support for people and their families going through those issues.

@@JetsetComedianPlease allow me to clarify your understandable assertion. It’s not that he’s not accountable, it’s just that apparently it was adjusted that he could not be held responsible for his actions… others were given that responsibility and had the legal rights to take the actions needed to control his behavior. Unfortunately, the people who were counted on to shoulder that burden failed somewhere along the line.. whether it be the police or social workers. I know of a similar case locally where there were stabbings involved because, plainly put, the problem went into a bureaucratic hole and the people that were supposed to be notified weren’t so the police lacked the authorization to intervene before it was too late. You’d be surprised by the laws that are in place to protect the rights of ID/DD individuals because politicians, given the choice, hide them away in institutions.

@@JetsetComedian at what point did I say that it is not his fault? I am not saying he is not responsible for his actions ultimately, what I was saying is that having mental health and/or learning difficulties=inevitable violence is not true, and that if Bryant had been brought up in a supportive environment by both family and state services then the chances of such a horrific outcome would have been much less. Putting our hands up in the air and saying that some people are just born irreparably damaged is not a solution, just a convenient way of not having to address our own societal and institutional failings and maybe doing something about those so that we reduce the likelihood of these horrific events happening.

I'm Aussie so it's great to see someone not only cover the massacre, but the man behind it all. Not because he deserves our sympathy, but because it helps us understand just why someone would do such a horrendous thing. The swift action the Howard Government took on all but banning guns completely was one of the best things he did for this country. Sure, we still have horrendous events like this (there was a mass stabbing in Bondi Junction just last month), but I haven't seen one on this scale in my lifetime (this happened when I was very young so I don't remember it). Such an awful, horrifically tragic case. I’ve heard a lot of speculation that he killed his father.. and intentionally killed the older woman as well. He came across as someone who was very slow but numerous psychiatrists believed he was far more competent and clever than everyone thought. At least he was intelligent enough to know what he was doing in every sense.. and he likely got away with two murders before that tragic day. Maybe if they had looked into him more, his massacre could have been prevented because he likely would have been in prison or a psyche ward. Great job covering this.❤

First off, this guy was born in 1967 or so. There was really no understanding of autism spectrum disorders in the broader context of society then. Even in the early 1980s, it wasn’t really understood outside of clinical settings and wasn’t talked about unless you knew a family member or close friend who had the diagnosis. Even less understood was treatments or therapies. His parents likely had very little to work with in terms of guidance from psychologists. So to scorn them using 2020s understanding and knowledge about treatment for what they were dealing with over 40 years ago is ludicrous. In some respects, I think this guy is dealing with more than just an autism diagnosis. I suspect there’s some sociopathy there too. He had way too much “fun” killing things like the birds and other small critters in their yard. He seems to have relished killing. That’s not autism, that’s criminal. It sounds like he probably murdered his father too. He needs to rot in that prison until his death.

I knew about the massacre, but I never really knew the backstory. I am a big advocate for mental health care and for people being given a chance to live their best life, at whatever level they are able. But what is the best care for someone who, from a very young age, shows a delight in killing, a high level of unpredictability, and a desire to call attention to himself, with little or no understanding of social norms or consequences? Could anything at all have been done to put him on a good path in life? I really don't know the answer. But clearly introducing him to weapons, handing him millions of dollars, and cutting him loose from any kind of supervision was a recipe for absolute disaster. My heart goes out to anyone who is connected to this story.

Great video, thank you very much for this one! By the way, you can still own a gun in Australia, you just have to have a good reason to obtain a gun licence like being a farm owner, or worker, member of a gun club for sport etc. Automatic, Pump-Action & Semi-Auto Rifles are banned. There are extremely thorough back ground Police, medical & mental health checks involved. All guns that are owned legally by a licensed owner must be registered & stored in an approved Gun Safe that has to be bolted to the floor or wall. These measures greatly reduced all gun violence in Australia & there hasn't been a single mass-shooting here since these laws were put into place.

This was such a profound event in Australia. It really did change the country. Port Arthur was a historic site for the whole nation and it is now equally as infamous for this event. Over the last few years, America's bizarre conspiracy theories have started to bleed over into Australia (crisis actors, massacres not really happening, the 'government taking our guns' type of stuff) and the Port Arthur Massacre is one event they really focus in on. They claim it wasn't Bryant because the shooter was capable of counting how many bullets he had discharged from his semi-automatic (something special forces are taught how to do). Despite all the evidence and witnesses, these idiots have come to believe that SAS soldiers committed the crime and the government then blamed it on Bryant in order to remove guns from the population.

The bit that many people found hard to believe was the accuracy of the shooting and rapid time it took for him to kill people in the cafe. Information was pretty light on but one witnesses believed it was more like 4 minutes not 90 seconds and the reason why he was able to kill so many people is because the rear exit could not be opened. People were killed because they had nowhere to escape. Why police were so insistent that it happened in 90 seconds might be related to the building being state owned since 95' and the potential backlash if everyone knew what impact that had on the shooting. I guess it sounds like a conspiracy but when the police insist someone killed 20 odd people in 90 seconds with mostly headshots it created a lot of theories...

The police negotiator talking to Bryant at Seascape could clearly hear shots being fired from within the building and Bryant said, you are going to take out your man, should have been a red flag that someone else was there! Also they turned a prosecutor into his defence representative to make him plead guilty or he will never see his mother again!

An ordinary man with no military experience or specialist training. Shooting a room full of people one after the other. With only seconds between shots, all kill shots is impossible. Ask anyone with military experience. He didn't have the training. This is special forces levels of speed and accuracy. Why are the files on this case under court order for 99 years. Why was the Hobart hospital running the exact same training for a event like this at the same time as this event. Why did the Howard Liberal government sell all of the Australia telecommunications infrastructure in the week after this event. Why was it a closed court hearing. This was a planned event by the Australian government or people acting in alliance with them. A population without a way to defend itself is easy to dictate too. Wake up before it's too late. As some1, who is an Aspie, Bryant sure doesnt sound at all like an Aspie. I realise, that this was nearly 30 years ago, and the diagnosis was in its infancy and not well understood, but still. If he even was an Aspie, thats not, what made him act like this, that has nothing to do with, what Aspergers is. It does sound like, he had a whole host of psychological diagnosises, its hard to tell, which were real, and which were speculation, but likely a combo of various psychological disorders, his parents' ill thought through parenting including arming him and protecting him from reality and getting actual help, along with the failure of authorities to act even with the assessment in his file, is what led to this tragedy. This clearly avoidable tragedy. At least it brought something good in the gun legislation. But that is little comfort for all the lives lost.

A very good rundown of what happened that day and the perpetrators crazy life. Tasmania had the most lax gun regulation in the country by quite a lot at that time and would have been the only state where someone like that could have accessed those weapons. On the mainland anything basically military caliber and purpose carried signifigant regulation. Even prior pistols were also extremely rare to find in ownership of those who didn't have a regular use for them. Highly regulated The one mystery that always had me wondering was the timing of certain events that had occurred previously government wise and the comprehensive response it came up with virtually immediately almost like the plan was already made. You have to keep in mind that Howard was a dishonest lying POS who to get favorable support for his refugee policy had a story with pictures put together of children supposedly being thrown overboard by refugees. When the Aus navy captain stood up and denied this he was threatened with his career, pension and prison if he didn't retract the truth for the lie. It was only the testimony of the freighter captain that actually shone truth into the matter. The affect in Australia was comprehensive and it forever changed the narrative with weapons in general. It certainly corrupted and common sense to such an extent that today, I have a feral pigeon problem in my yard. Years ago you could clean them up with a low powered air rifle that wouldn't even penetrate an iron fence. Now you cant even buy or be found in possession of a sling shot to do pest control. A sling shot not exactly a weapon of war but indeed classified as something that will get you dragged off in cuffs and jailed if sentenced.

Unfortunately what I am about to say will not carry far enough to usher a change. Had his father bought him a pet instead of a gun at an early age, Martin Bryant would not only have found solace in the love that the animals give, and in doing so learnt compassion along the way, he might never have found an interest in guns of his own accord which led him to enjoy killing early on. His parents could have sought out employment where he could work with animals, reducing contact with people who might judge him for his social incapabilities. It all starts with wrong upbringing and education regardless of Autism or other forms of Asperger.
