3 Things Adventure Time Fails With And Steven Universe Excels At!

Adventure Time, like any show has it's fair share of problems. I decided to point out three big ones here. Coincidentally Steven Universe handles these three things much better than Adventure Time.
Note 1: This video was made before I knew about the new Adventure Time episodes in the first week of June.
Note 2:: I saw the ending of season 6 and while it was decent, none of it really refutes my points here.

Will Williams This. To be fair though, just got out of it's first season (or second, realistically). I doubt Rebecca planned to have into 4 seasons worth of episodes. With human characters though, she may pull original stories (those that were not planned out from the beginning). Adventure Time didn't really have arcs until the end of Season 2. They transitioned into it. And even then up until Season 5 it was consistently great.

Asterite100 I heard they had already finished the second season's finale of SU by the time the first one aired. The Crewniverse hinted at it, I think. So not 4 seasons, but that probably means they're working on season 3 by now!

ViridianBile Yeah, there are 3 seasons confirmed, but if I understand correctly, they are mega-seasons like season 1, since seasons usually have 26 episodes. So I'd doubt she's plan out to 4 seasons. But yeah we can look forward to these next 2 seasons!

I think that in a few years looking back, Adventure Time will be remembered as a series that opened doors for series that came after it. It did a good job of convincing studios that such shows could be built around these new short time slots and still be 'good' in terms of story AND demonstrated that you could integrate some touchy subjects without making them defining characteristics. But it was just a bridge. I encounter a lot of people who really liked Adventure Time, but after encountering Steven Universe keep looking back at AT in terms of what it could have been.

Finn's dad was one of the worse things in the series. When I heard Billy tell Finn that his dad was alive, I was freaking out. Something big was going to happen. Then his dad appeared and, while it was an awesome episode, I wasn't even convinced that he WAS his dad. I'm still not. He came back one episode, BAM there he goes.

TheBanannaPanda Yeah, I felt the exact same way as you did. I mean, the way they tried to convey who's supposedly Finn's father wasn't showcased all that well. In fact, they could have very well freed a dangerous, sociopathic character for no real reason in the end if something's revealed that the guy wasn't Finn's dad after all!

It was bummed by this too. When Billy talked about Finn's father, I thought that a huge war arc or something was coming (even more because he said that his father was a knight). Then the continued episodes on next season were completely unrelated (and also kind of boring because they told things instead of showing). Then the episode about his father came up, and he was this boring and mean character. A big missed opportunity, if they were going with his father being unlikeable, they could just write him as a villain instead. I was waiting for the revelation that he wasn't his father, then he just turned into a comet in like, the third or fourth episode he was in.

Maybe it's just me being easy to please in comparison to a lot of other people, but I don't really have a big problem with any of these issues (particularly the first two) I actually like that the show can bounce around a lot of characters and tones. "Random experimental one off stuff" just appeals to me, and I've accepted that's basically the type of show this is. It's more like a series of vignettes with a consistent cast than anything else. I dunno, I really can't put it into words, but none of this stuff really makes me enjoy Adventure Time any less.

That's fair enough. If you just want to see something different and experimental every time, this show is totally good at that. That's why I like the show so much more on first watch, than when I actually watch it again. I like seeing where each episode is going, but once I know.... it's just not interesting enough to make me come back.

Adventure Time used to be one of my favorite shows, when it was all about actual fun adventures, complete with songs, the occasional dark episode, and a generally lighthearted feel. It never took itself too seriously. Now, it seems like every other episode is either rushed, dragged out, and above all, it takes itself too seriously with all of its deeper meaning shenanigans. The way it's changed for the worse (and I really hope nobody gets mad at me for this) kind of reminds me of how Doctor Who's changed in its more recent seasons. It just doesn't have that same feel of fun and adventure. They were both exceptionally dark, don't get me wrong, and I liked that. But I liked that not every single episode was dark, and if it was, the characters kept it lighthearted. And neither took themselves too seriously. Both of those shows used to be my favorites, but with the way they've changed, it's like they're not even the same show anymore.

Steven's Lion 9th was a bit dark, not Aa goof like 11th but he still felt like the Doctor. The problems with the new season are that, 1.- The dialogue is almost complete shit.2.- The stories are not that interesting, and 3.-Clara and Danny Pink.

While I still like Adventure Time even though I haven't watched it in a while, I have to agree with you. I mean, Steven Universe at least knows to keep most of it's characters in one place rather than having this massive ensemble cast that's spread out all over the place, and the tone is mature and balanced and doesn't alienate the audience. The story arcs? Oh boy, this is something I can agree with, Adventure Time is just terrible with story arcs. You have about a dozen different plot threads, only build upon them little by little, and only every so 20 episodes does the plot even bother to continue. The rest of the time it's either just filler or desperately trying to juggle several plot-lines at once. Sometimes they will just abruptly end a plot thread without even doing anything with it (like you said with Jake the dad and teen Bubblegum), and other times they wait half a season or longer to continue or conclude it. If anything, I think they just have too many plot threads when Steven Universe only has about 5-6 of them and builds them all up at once episode by episode rather than just building it a little and going straight to 10 episode of filler where nothing happens. One thing I will appreciate with Steven Universe is that, if I remember right, it's been confirmed by the creators of the show that they actually have everything planned out from start to finish and that they know how they want the series to end when it eventually does. With Adventure Time, I dunno if they have an overall master plan for the series or if they're just making stuff up along the way, and by the looks of it, it seems more like the latter is what's going on, especially when you consider the first season was really just Finn and Jake having random adventures with no real story arc going on.

Masterge77 Yeah, it is. The prolonged filler is so astounding that I actually feel like it has become the new Naruto for Western Animation. What I mean is, both shows have concepts that sound awesome in paper, but they are terrible with their arcs by constantly ditching them and doing ultimately nothing with them until far too late when everyone just stops caring for them, which is a massive problem if you're reliant on storytelling. And then there's Princess Bubblegum becoming sociopathic and outright selfish at times.

I love naruto a little less than pokemon because they both have their share of fillers, but Naruto shippuden is literally just filler after filler after filler every season! Pokemon has cool pokemon battles and gym battles every few episodes, but naruto just has villains plotting killing some people that you don't remember the names of, and waits till the end of the season to actually do something. The movies are awesome though and I can't wait for the next movie and series of naruto And a pokemon movie with hoopa is coming up too!

My biggest problem with adventure time is that the writers don't seem to know what kind of show it is anymore, they throw so many themes at it in attempt to make something dark and interesting, only to unhinge it an episode later with random nonsensical bullshit. I became a fan very early on due to the episodes abstract plots and lighthearted tone, but it somehow evolved into some lore driven drama where Finn is juggling girlfriends and fans argue about lesbian pairings being canon and it's just stupid now. Not to mention the complete lack of character development, which I'd be completely okay with if they stuck to the episodic format and dropped arcs altogether, but they refuse to...

SU’s first season tried this to an extent, but it did in a very boring and tbh annoying way. Then S2 came around and people said it was getting better. I think youre taking it all wrong, AT isnt suppose to be a story driven show. The reason they introduce so many side characters and random plots, is because, THATS WHAT THE SHOW IS. AT is a random non episodic show of random adventures. Its suppose to be fun, not a hbo movie. The difference isnt that one is better and one is worse, the difference is they are different shows. Adventure time is a crazy nonsensical, whimsical, childhood vibed show. SU is a more mature and story driven show which follows a specific timeline with a overall train ride towards a goal or ending. The difference is AT is suppose to be non linear and crazy and surprising and random show that doesnt take itself too seriously. The problem isnt AT at all, the problem is just that youve grown out of it and are looking for a more serious and story driven show, and thats okay. But dont try an down a show that is what its always been, just because youve grown a taste for something new. You dont try and eat ice cream if youre in the mood for a turkey sandwich.

I get what youre saying but i see it differently, Adventure time is in this for the long run, theyre in no rush to bust through an actual plot, they never have been since the show began, they throw in some plot just because its good fun to throw it in, but the majority of the show is still random adventures and scenarios of the people of the world. Its adventure time, its roots are in the crazy, zany random adventures and characters and stories. Ive watched all the episodes, no i didnt watch them on the days they came out i watch them when i can and when i feel like it, it took me a year to watch season 5 and 6. The thing is that youre probably growing out and getting bored of watching the same old nonsensical adventures, they lost theyre spark for you which is normal and okay. Yeah the show doesnt deliver much depth or linear story telling or great build up to a single plot, because theyre just meant to be a fun little adventure. It never has done that, sure they throw plot in once in a while just for fun and try to keep it going a bit for you, just for some different entertainment sake, but you latched onto that bone and wont let go. I think that youre looking to deep into it, take the show for what it is. Just a spurt of randomness and a half hour of quirky adventure that may or may not have a message sometimes. Theyre not looking for a poweful story, theyre looking for a quick fix of fun, and what youre looking for in your life and your entertainment now is a story driven show, and so theres your answer, go watch a story driven show with constant re ocurring characters, but dont complain when adventure time (who was never known for that) continues to be crazy ass adventure time.

Rose isn't dead. The Rose Quartz gem replaced its original sentience by combining with human biology to become an entirely new being. Rose is a part of Steven, as her gem (essentially her) is now a part of him.

I still love Adventure Time tho, even tho Seasons 5 and 6 are not really good compared to Season 1-4, coincendetally, Rebecca Sugar and Pendleton Ward did leave the show around Season 5 and 6, and I think it definitley shows. I'm still watching Adventure Time and I still will until the VERY end, and I hoping Season 7 will be the VERY last Season and everything will end from there. I'll also agree Steven Universe is better than Adventure Time and I have more fun watching SU than I do with modern Adventure Time (S 5-6). *SIGH* I REALLY wish the story arcs in AT like Flame Princess, the Lich, Finn's arm, and Finn's father issues were handled better.

I feel like the story arc problem can be explained kinda like this: it seems like they're trying to be a story driven show while also be a character driven show where you can just watch any episode without being too confused (I mean if you know nothing about the show you will be confused anyway) which is very hard to pull off, I honestly can't think of any show that has been able to pull it off. it's either just a character driven show with a few one hour specials with plots or a plot driven show with well developed and charming characters. steven universe is definitely the latter, while there are a number of one-shot episodes, there is almost some sort of remaining impact by the end and there's almost always contributing to the main plot in each episode.

I'd rather watch Adventure Time all seasons 5 times in a row then to watch Steven Universe. At least Adventure Time has good animations. But I just can't stand Steven Universe. I hate the characters, I hate the creator of the show. The plots don't make sense a lot of the time, They let Steven gets away with anything with very little punishment. The animation is NEVER constant, the characters look like they were drawn by a ten year old (My sister who's ten can draw better and she draws anime which I also despise) It's meant for young children but there are clear sexual themes in it. it's really uncomfortable because I first watched it with my sisters one of which is 7, and when I saw those scenes I felt like I needed to recheck the rating and was dumbfounded that 8 and older were the appropriate age. Don't even get me started on Rebecca Sugar the creator of the show, she is creepy, she's drawn creepy things. I don't want my sisters watching this show if it's the last thing in this universe. But...To each their own I suppose.

Is there such thing as multiple crossovers? I know SU did a cross over with Uncle Grandpa (Which in my opinion was the worst 'episode') . This might sound crazy but ... i'd love to see Steven Universe, Adventure Time, Regular Show and The Amazing World of Gumball do a crossover. And with all their 'magical' (The reason I put ' is because Regular Show isn't very magical apart from the talking animals and Death) themes it just feels right that they'd be in the same universe :D

What I like is that AT hand such a long rising action or developing stage (1-4) that I really got attached to it so when they show a feels scene I almost shed a tear. But in SU, kinda but yeah. AT explored the worlds a lot, we still don't know what the hell "Homeworld" looks like despite the build-up, AND we've had exactly one appearance of The Diamonds [who're supposed to be the bad guys]. The side characters issue is also an issue in SU now that there're so many. Lapis satellites only to Steven, when her "neutral" allegiance has so many angles that could be worked. Why have Connie and Peridot not interacted despite both being part of the big team? And what about Bismuth? Just an out of nowhere gem who came for a special before being defeated Whereas AT acknowledges that ultimately Finn, Jake, and Bubblegum are the trio and everything else is secondary? So it makes sense that things are as they are. Point is, lots of what is criticized here about AT is present in Steven Universe, and why not? The creator DID come from Adventure Time after all.

Rebecca Workman well character development isn't exactly what Adventure Time was always going for. While there is character development they make it happen at a slower pace which there is no harm in because not everything that happens in the world of a story is going to further characters. I always really liked that in Adventure Time. How one episode you could be having an adventure and the next you learn more about a characters past and all these little details that hint to so much more. I always loved that. Steven Universe is faster paced in terms of that. I Love it because you really want to know more about these characters as most of the episodes now are more based around the characters and learning about them. It's like comparing apples and oranges. They're both doing different things and you can't really compare them in that aspect. I think Adventure Times pacing and Steven Universes pacing suits them. Slower character development isn't a bad thing necessarily. In real life we don't have massive changes every single week. We change slowly over time and that's what adventure time does well. Steven Universe characters are so close together that things are bound to affect their lives and how they act so it makes sense geographically for them to change as people quicker. This is babbling probably made no sense because it's late at night for me XD but damn it if I don't love both shows

***** I see where I was wrong there. Well, I see that I came off a little too strongly. I just love this show too much not to talk about it. Even if it's at the expense of other shows. Really there should be more shows like Steven Universe and Adventure Time and less shows like Clarence and Uncle Grandpa. Those shows(uncle grandpa, teen titans go!, etc.) have a very loose storyline where barely anything sticks. The characters can even DIE and the episode will just end. The next episode, they'll all be alive and act as if absolutely nothing happened. They take death and twist it into a bad joke. Now I'm not saying these shows are bad, but they're just not great. Steven Universe and Adventure Time, however, have: 1. A good storyline w/ little to no holes in it. 2. Positive messages(what you should expect at least a little of in a kids show) 3. Character development(no matter how fast) 4. A good set of main characters(yes, that should be #1, but just don't fuss me for it) See, these two shows are in the "best shows" list for me, and those are the top 5 reasons why(trust me, I could go on all day about this).

I never really looked at Adventure Time as a long running arc based narrative. It's just a bunch of small self contained stories set in a fun fantasy setting. All of the reoccurring themes going on in the background are simply there to establish the worlds lore and character back stories. Yeah, there are occasional story arcs spanning multiple episodes and things going on in the background, but the show has never attempted to be a long running story. Steven Universe on the other hand is a long running story spanning multiple seasons, and tells its story well. Personally, Adventure Time is my favorite cartoon because of how much I like the setting and character. Steven Universe is a close second though, although I agree that it tells a better story.

I honestly wouldn't know; I never seemed to stick by Adventure Time since its launch. It looked interesting and from what I can gather, it has a lot of great ideas; but something about it just kept me from enjoying it. Maybe it's the tone, the art style, or the face that hardly any of the main characters seem to have nostrils; but either way I never was too hooked on it. John DiMaggio was good as Jake, though; he can make almost anything work. Steven Universe, however, I've been hooked on since I discovered it less than a year ago. I love the tone, I love the setting *as a fellow beach resident myself*, the music's probably the best I've heard out of a Cartoon Network show in a LONG time, and I frigging adore the characters! With one or two minor exceptions, they're all top-notch and downright lovable! I say exceptions since one or two of them REALLY rubbed me the wrong way; mainly Jasper and Peridot. I dunno, there's just something about them I just can't stand; and to say the least, I was so satisfied when Garnet gave her the ol' one-two in the season finale! That's another thing; on any other show, the Crystal Gems would probably have been written as one-dimensional superheroes. But thanks to both Steven Universe, his actor Zach Callison's performance and the ingenious writing staff, they're surprisingly deep, lovable, and downright badass! Personal favorite Crystal Gem of mine has to be Garnet for three reasons: 1. She's got a great British accent, which gets an automatic thumbs up from me :P 2. She's got one of the most beautiful voices I've heard from the show. I admit I haven't heard her voice actress's body of work, but she REALLY makes me want to! Speaking of... 3. Her voice actress's performance. Her voice is by Miss Estelle Fanta Swaray, and MAN does she fit the role! Although at first she does come off as bored as Russel Crowe in every movie he's in, she grows more and more as the season goes on. She tries to be the pillar for the other CG when they start flying off the deep end, and it really shows that she cares about the well being of not just them, but the Earth.

One thing most people would notice without realizing it with Steven Universe is that they've actually formed a bit of a pattern with episodes. They do a certain number of "heavy" episodes, then they switch over to more comedic, or a half-comedic episode. A great example of a comedic episode in dark times would be Love Letters, or Historical Friction (both with the return of the best post man Jamie :D). An episode that seems to be half comedic would be Chille Tid, where Steven realizes he can talk to Jasper and Lapis through his dreams, but it keeps the tone much lighter than a normal episode by using Pearl's dream and other jokes.

To be fair, Adventure Time is on it's 6 and almost 7th season with about 50 episodes per season (now at least) when Steven Universe is on it's 2nd season with about 30 episodes per season... There's a big gap here...

A big part of why AT's going downhill is the fact that a lot of the show's best talent are leaving to work on personal projects (SU and Bee and Puppycat in particular), and Pendleton is focused more on Bravest Warriors. Rebecca Sugar was not only one of the most well-regarded writers, but also one of the lead composers for the show. It's a lot like what happened with Family Guy. McFarlane focused more on American Dad and split his writing team between the two shows, and two of the best writers left to start up Phineas and Ferb (Which is now ending)
