India is a big country with many races languages and religions. When you see large groups of men as roommates it's usually because they found each other while looking for a place to live. They aren't from the same group. That also causes more problems. It may be unpleasant to hear Tamil movie songs blasting while you are trying to sleep if you are a Tamilan, but frustration increases when you speak some other Indian lang with no mutual intelligibility. Quiet and courtesty is the order of the day when living in a large number of mixed groups. I lived in an all-ladies boarding house in India during university and it was OK. Edit: I can't remember if it is legal in India to discriminate based on gender but in practice it happens all the time. One of the requirements for job applicants is to attach a recent headshot photo along with details of caste, marital status, and parents and both maternal and paternal sides of grandparents' addresses even if they are not alive. This is done for bg check. It also helps to verify caste. I once saw an ad for a job that stated "no Hindus". He caught media heat but explained that as a Hindu himself with all-Hindu workforce he needed some ppl of other religions who would be willing to work Hindu holidays. Things are different there.

As a woman landlord, and as a half-South Asian, I understand the no bachelor policy. Just like a lot of these places, I didn't use to have that policy, but after a series of men tenants who were filthy to the point of allowing vermin infestation and/or destructive or dangerous to the structure of the home (breaking doors or windows out of recklessness, storing explosive material in the house), I switched to women-only. Female tenants are not without their own issues. For example, some of them from pampered backgrounds (all whyte) expect me, a half-Black half-South Asian, to be their servant woman. I have had a couple of stellar men tenants, but unfortunately bad men tenants can cause so much damage. By the way, some of the filthiest apartments I've been in -- with the exception of those of drug addicts -- have been those of young South Asian men. I know very few South Asian men who clean up after themselves. If their house is clean, they almost certainly have a woman doing it -- either a maid, a wife, or their mother.

My friend’s house was TRASHED by her male tenant, who originally moved in with his wife and daughter. He was abusive and crazy, so the wife left with the child. The dude squatted on my friend’s property for a year and a half (she was in the courts trying to get him evicted, but there was backlog from COVID). After he was finally escorted out by cops, he came BACK that night, kicked down the door and trashed the house even more. My relative has worked as a realtor, this is not uncommon in my part of the world (Eastern Europe) to not want to rent to bachelors. The landlord would ask the realtor privately, so that there will be no claims of discrimination, no threats, etc. Men do tend to leave the apartments they used to rent in a bad state. Not all of them, but enough for it to be a stereotype. Most landlords want to rent to women, and often women with kids. We actually have a law that makes it insanely hard to evict a tenant with a kid unless they did something really extreme. And still, most women with kids don't take advantage of that, don't wreck the place, don't refuse to leave, etc. And kid in the eyes of landlord is a guarantee that the tenant would stay for a little longer because kids need stability and parents prefer to live near their kids' school and such.

@@childfreescallywag that's exactly the type of thing I had in mind, and I'm sorry you've experienced that. I've had neighbors at 2 different properties playing music loud enough to keep me awake, leaving me groggy at work the next day. Had a neighbor at one property throw his trash on the communal stairwell because it wasn't collected on garbage day as he had refused to pay the dues. Had a different neighbor bang on my door threatening to beat me up because I opened the compound gate to allow 2 girls he was beating up to escape. The same guy is a messy tenant even to the landlord due to delayed rent payments and refusal to pay his water and electricity bills, but the landlord won't do anything about it, it's weird. Then there's the dudes sharing a house who beat up a utility company worker who had come to take a meter reading... Just writing this comment I've realised that every messy neighbor I have ever had with the exception of one has been a single XY, or a group of 2 / 3 single XYs sharing a house. How would one impose a cost for this kind of mess?

I had a landlord who refused to rent to single men. He was upfront about it, and he didn't care about housing discrimination laws. He'd been burned bad by men who destroyed property, including one man who butchered a deer in an apartment, leaving congealed blood throughout the kitchen and living room when he left. (This was in Florida, so ...) At another building, I made a case for a break on the rent, pointing to my gender (female) and age (old) to persuade the landlord I was a good bet for respecting the property and being a stable tenant. I got the break! I suggest other single ladies unencumbered by men try this.

1st part: It’s my opinion that when it comes to subjects like this men are clueless. All they know is their own behavior and they will project that onto other men as is evidenced by the comments in the video. They need to understand that if you don’t discuss a subject with others, then they have no clue how anyone else behaves. 2nd part: 30 years is long enough in a marriage to someone looking/cheating behind your back. And, there is a chance of getting part of his retirement in a divorce. So, I say divorce him and move on living your best life.

As a former tenant, l was able to get rental acvomodation easily with following rules - not cooking non veg, no alcohol, no smoking, no boys, not coming back after 11 pm, paying extra for water/ electricity if a guest stays more than 3 days., Clean the house myself or hire someone to do that . and pay for any maintenance work (AC) etc . Later on the landlady “Aunty” brought me food when l was sick, and her son fixed up my laptop for free. Previous to that house, the ones l had seen had beer bottles and cigarettes butts thrown in the corridor. It was a mixed residential complex, both males and females living on that building. I am American and have lived in India. I am not surprised that in Mumbai they don’t want sloppy single men moving in. Additionally, some of these spaces are turning down upwardly mobile men. These men would have to income to pay someone to cook and clean for them. (Mumbai is one of the most expensive cities in the world to live in and property is expensive there.) Additionally, it is common for men from rural areas to go to larger cities for work. Often times their wives and kids stay behind at least temporarily. If a man works in a restaurant or hotel (maybe not 5 star) they actually live on the property. These men do know how to cook and clean. Whether or not they do at home with their families, I can’t say.

Because we wouldn't have to deal with sexual harassment as much. I'm willing to bet that many women form how we dress around "modesty." If we didn't have to worry about modesty, then we would dress more for comfort and self-expression and leave it at that. Now he's still going about it all wrong.
