Outgoing going Boeing CEO David Calhoun (BA) testified in front of a US Senate panel on Tuesday, addressing safety concerns within the company. Several heated exchanges between Calhoun and senators took place, including one where Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) called out Calhoun's $33 million pay package while he is "cutting corners" and "eliminating safety procedures" for employees.
Former Medtronic CEO Bill George joins Market Domination to give insight into Calhoun's testimony before Congress and what Boeing needs to do to fix its problems.
When asked what he would do if he was CEO of Boeing, George responds: "First of all, I think you have to appoint someone who has an aeronautical background and has the courage to transform the company. But number one, move the company back to Seattle. That's its roots, that's its culture and by abandoning that, going to Chicago and now Arlington, Virginia, it's been a horrible mistake."
He continues: "It's not just fixing the instance quality problem. You've got to revamp the entire quality and supply chain. They farmed out the fuselage manufacturing to Spirit Aero (SPR). That was a big mistake. They've got to reinstate top to bottom a quality culture. People that just try to fix an individual quality problems will always have more that pop up somewhere else. It's like whack a mole."

Boeing did not “farm out” fuselage work to Spirit Aerosystems! It never left! Spirit Aerosystems is the former Wichita, Kansas division of Boeing that divested back in 2005. That facility has been making 737 fuselages since its inception. Spirit runs just like Boeing because it is Boeing people. I worked as a quality engineer at Spirit from 2014 -2021, so ask me how I know. So Boeing reacquiring Spirit is a big shell game intended to do one thing: create distraction. Boeing reacquiring Spirit solves absolutely nothing on the Quality and Safety fronts.

The first, biggest, and most important thing management can do to change the culture at Boeing is to actually MEAN IT. Everyone, likely rightfully, suspects that Boeing is still doing the least they can do with the only purpose being to quiet the criticism. Nobody believes they really want to change anything. AT A MINIMUM, the next CEO should be an engineer, not an accountant and not a sales person. They then need to start viewing whistleblowers as essential to the desired culture and not the enemies they are obviously still viewed as. They don't have much time, too nany paying passengers are voting with their feet. Continuing as they have been, issuing words but no real.changes, will destroy this company. It killed McDonnell Douglas and it will end up killing Boeing.
