As a apprentice getting ready to take my journeyman test, this has helped me a lot to prepare for what’s is to come. I am lucky enough to have been under a family owned business which my buddy owns who is a RMP AND has a uncle as a MP , they have given me all the hands on I needed to know. And with your videos I have learned also alot of knowledge. I have done both commercial and residential, we are currently contracted with school districts and state hospitals and I feel I am ready !!! Thank you again mr roger !!

Re name this to "three thing*s every apprentice should be TAUGHT" The issue isn't apprentices learning, it's these jackleg plumbing companies sending their apprentices out unprepared and not training them properly. It's a pretty big problem in my state. Half a year in and you're out with a second year apprentice doing work

The company i work for... commercial new construction mainly apartment complexes... we have 7 yr and a 9 yr "plumbers" that are technically apprentices still... all they do is waste (abs) groundworks layout setting tubs etc... I've been in the trades for years... just started plumbing 2 years ago and already passing them up...

My first 6 months I was drilling hangars , using snap cutters fir cast iron pipe , installing waste and vent cast-iron lines . Pro pressing copper water lines. Using the 1.414 45° formula , learning the individual prints . Using a sicsor lift. And learning the fittings getting them ready for my journeyman

That's the key, right at the end. Try and be the best you can it is how you make your money, take some pride in your work. Nothing like finishing some work, standing back and appreciating what you did. I'm in the middle of a plumbing and hvac apprenticeship. So much to learn, only been doing it a little over 2 years but I get journeyman work on my own doing commercial jobs. Soldered thousands of joints, Brazed plenty, miles of pipe, underground no hub, chilled water systems, DWV. Its amazing how fast you can pick up on this stuff with a little bit of commitment, never thought i'd love being a plumber but here I am lmao.

The guy that trained me always rane through what he was thinking of doing, always explained why and how, now I've gotten to the point where I'm apart of the plan making of how to run the drains/water/gas with him, now this is to the new apprentices, always ask why, pick there brain of all there knowledge, every time you go out to do a job ask them why that way

We didn't earn our Bones until we had been "Bitten" numerous times by all the different machines - Crazy thing about the Rooter business, you gotta get bit numerous times, that's how we learned that "feel" "touch" that goes with mastering the machines....Plumb on !!

The one thing that got me through was the fact that i was still an apprentice. If i had a question or needed advice, it was best to ask. The veterans of the trade would rather spend time helping you do it right than helping you fix the mistake

I just got accepted into the pipefitter apprenticeship and to be honest I am terrified. This is a big change for my family and I. Went from being a pastor to a tradesman. At 33 I just pray I can be great and not be a burden! What should an apprentice have tools and clothing wise prior to starting?

See in general I can easily foresee what my foreman needs next but so often we find ourselves in some more difficult predicaments where he’s borderline taking things step by step himself. I’m assuming the best I can offer in this situation is to attempt problem solving with him or at the least perform the act of piecing things together myself with his direction? Sorry great videos, really makes me feel more engaged with my trade.

Man I relate to this so much. I’m 5 months in my apprenticeship. I definitely try to hustle and anticipate what my journeyman will need next but sometimes he has to figure stuff out too. Especially since we do a lot of service. There’s a lot of old plumbing we have to fix that’s not the easiest to get to and replace.

I like the video Roger. I agree with many of the points you made but the only book that got me through my apprenticeship was the Bible. I can promise you, without that Book, I would not have made it. Trust in God and you will end up being a fantastic plumber, but also an honorable man. God bless.

Roger, your video reminded me of something from many years ago. I recently retired from the water well industry so shall we say a brother career path? So this is just something about apprentices that I hope will amuse you. Anyway, I had a new guy just hired and expected to have to hold his hand from day one, but I still underestimated his abilities. First job was a customer with no water. The well and tank were in an enclosure similar to a large dog house with a removable roof. After removing the roof and climbing in I tested the electrical parts of the system. There was no continuity through the motor down hole (submersible pump set at about 70’). This means the pump/motor unit has to be pulled. The top of the casing has a well seal with four bolts that tighten to hold it in the casing and prevent contamination of any kind from entering the well. Those bolts have a 9/16” hex head. I tell new guy to go grab a 9/16” wrench from the truck. A boxed end, an open end, or even a socket and ratchet will work. Our hero is gone for about 15 minutes and I’m about to climb back out of the enclosure to see what has happened to the young fellow when he finally returns. He says, “ Will this work?” and hands me a screwdriver… a Phillip’s head screwdriver. No, I did not make him walk home, but by the end of the week I recommended that he find a different line of work because he really did not have the aptitude for that job. Some people are quick to learn and anticipate your needs. Some people never learn and become a liability. I hope he found a suitable career where he never got himself or anyone else hurt.

Ah yes I remember the first experience using a right angel drill I was up on a ladder and for some reason I did not put the drill up against the studs just like the journeymen I was working with had told me instead I put my face in between the drill and the studs long story short that drill just whip right around right into my face almost broke my jaw and knocked me clean off that damn ladder only took once though that's for sure!

In my experience I've been plumbing for about 20 years I've worked Union and non union and there's been a transition where you may be able to find a company that pays union pay (or damn close) and great benefits also the CBD thing kind of depends on the company you work for open shop can axe you easy as union shop may be a little to much red tape and you Forman won't care

Hey bro, I'm not far from where you are. I just turned 21, started right after I turned 20. Been in it for a year now. I'm about to start my second year. So far the best advice I could give you is to focus on learning the proper use of tools now and just ask questions all the time. For me, I spent most of this past year doing just that and now feel like I can tackle year 2 properly and try to get ahead with my knowledge and skills since I have the basics down. Also, don't let the pieces of trash that you will inevitably work with ruin it for you. It's hard working with backstabbing snakes on the same crew for months. But like someone told me, "Be friendly, not familiar." And that's stuck with me. Anyway, hope my rambling makes sense. Goodluck brother.

Roger I don't think you expect much from your apprentice after a year it should be just a matter of time till they can go take their journeyman's test Anybody with a good mechanical ability should be spot on by the time they worked with a journeyman or a master for a year When I was in promise I was turned loose after 2 months and a kiss the truck and said here you go But I'm also a people person with God-given mechanical abilities so that may have been part of it

It's called the authority having jurisdiction,specific to the state you're in. States have different codes so in a right to work state,any non plumber can do work under his supervisors plumbing license. Not the case in other states.Enforcing plumbing code violations is your inspector's job.

Why? Plumbing is a high paying trade and for me it's a enjoyable trade. I'm in service and get different challenges daily and I'm not confined to the same 4 walls for more then a day at a time. Some of the plumber's where is work easily make 6 figures

I went into pipe welding currently 19 made 109k in chemical plants and shipyards worked maybe 7-8 months that year… yeah QCs are dicks X-Ray is pretty much your unemployment if you bust one. But cmon you’re gonna tell me you want to plumb instead of weld? You’re out of your mind if you could go back and get into plumbing or pipe welding that you would choose plumbing…

Im certified in welding..was a licensed journeyman plumber Union trained, went through a 5 year 10000 hour apprenticeship. Worked on the Alaska pipeline for 6 years. Did Fabrication for 6 years and hated every second. Mind numbing repetitive ugh. Not to mention the one track minds you have to work with day in and day out. "Got er done" please Plumbing was anything but boring. I do neither these days as my home business does just fine..
