I guess they want to differentiate from their Mako reverb pedal. It's a one-hit soundscape wonder of a pedal, for folks who wanted Slo in stereo. And if you look at it like that, I guess it doesn't really need MIDI or expression cus it kind of just does one thing anyway.

I hear ya, and while that does make sense, MIDI would have been nice just for more preset if nothing else :)

I wish all pedal manufacturers added a stereo width feature switch like this (along with having the stereo in AND out options).... The difference between mono and stereo is so enormous, and not having that option on a particular pedal really takes some careful planning and perhaps sacrifices on the signal chain flow options.... Ok, so I have a general question, just because I am not sure how to go about imperically testing it.... This Sloer pedal has different widths of stereo, and I would have everything to the wide side (way more lush sounding).... So, obviously if you have this Sloer last in the chain, the stereo is opened up wide (as set).... Let's say you put another stereo pedal after the Sloer, that perhaps isn't quite as lush and "wide" sounding.... Would the Sloer wide stereo sound field get narrowed by the stereo width of the second pedal....? I learned about the widening stereo effect from my Demedash T-60 Modulator, which also seems to have a wider stereo field.... This my first stereo pedal after the mono pedals, and ending stereo out the NightSky.... It always made me wonder if the chain would be "wider" stereo if I put the T-60 after the NightSky, or if the stereo width information survives thru the other stereo pedals (even though they may have varying stereo widths).... You know what I mean....? LoL I ask because, all of my life and up until recently, I thought "stereo" was "stereo", a universally known single thing.....and all of the sudden now there are wider stereo options....!? This Sloer pedal demonstrates this, and just brings questions to mind.... =)

I really love your thoughts here and appreciate you taking the time to articulate them! What great thoughts!!! First let’s tackle the “everything should be stereo”. I lean towards this camp for sure, but from a pedal design and manufacturing standpoint it doesn’t always make sense. Most drive pedals don’t need to be stereo. Compressor, EQ, Buffer, etc. There aren’t many reasons for these to be stereo unless you have a stereo output guitar (Gibson / Rickenbacher), or to have completely different signal chains on the left and right channels. Maybe you have an amp on the left that doesn’t like a Tubescreamer but you really like a tubescreamer so you put that on the right. That sort of thing. (I do have a stereo overdrive, the Too Positive by Montreal Assembly. I love it!) For digital pedals like the Slöer, you need to program stereo into your effect and it’s not always easy. For analog pedals (especially delay and reverb) you would have to literally duplicate the circuit to be able to have stereo and then, it might just be 2 independent Effecfs that don’t play off each other. So yes, stereo is awesome but I can understand why it’s not always implemented. Now to your question about adding an effect after the Slöer and if that would diminish the width. As long as the other pedals are true stereo and they don’t sum the stereo input into mono before effecting it’s and then spitting it back out in stereo then you’re good. Think of it this way: the Slöer in its widest setting sends out completely separate audio on the L/R. As long as the following pedal keeps the L&R inputs separate then that width would stay. Now add a second Slöer after the first Slöer both in wide and that will probably blow your mind

That all makes sense.... =) My second amp (back in the mid 90s) was a used music shop Peavey stereo chorus amp - didn't understand then why no one else in my small circle didn't have one..... A sound like no other, beautiful, even to today's standards of sound quality.... Just seems that 30 years later, stereo would be the standard option for ANYTHING/ any tool having to do with sound production.... At whatever cost - and a lot of the costs of pedals have gone WAY up, and they still have the same old circuitry of yesterday.... Challenge breeds innovation..... Pedal manufacturers are stuck in the old mental paradimn of one chord in, one chord out, where everybody in the WHOLE WORLD is now fully capable of producing a stereo professional recording session at their fingertips, at any time, any place.... Pedals are not just for guitar, they are geared and promoted for everything now.... The option should be available, the consumer should have the option of being stereo, with the choice of using it mono.... **shrugs** I am an Engineer, so perhaps my view is a bit biased in that direction, but the goals of a successful company making products is to appease the most people with versatility, options, intuitiveness, innovation, quality (and doing it safely in the process!).... =)

Are you a studio engineer or live engineer primarily? Technology has improved for sure but as you know, from a live perspective, you don’t always get stereo separation out of a PA. Studio is different for sure but live is still stuck I think.

@@thepedalcollaborative There are situations where the stereo option couldn't be utilized.... =) Wrong kind of engineer, I am a Product Design Engineer - 3D CAD.... =) Music was always more a hobby, even now after the long 18yr hiatus.... I would say fruitless, but it is satisfying.... Not sure that I would ever work it up to playing out again.... Something is really starting to click musically with shifting particular notes in a scale while I am playing guitar, kind of shifting into a similar scale for moments - quite the flavor enhancer.... It is like my flashlight to the musical map is getting a little brighter, and it is starting to get exciting, because music writing is getting really cool....! Killer weekend, at least one song (with 3 good movements), and perhaps a good start to a second song.... =) Not sure where it is all coming from, sometimes it seems as if from thin air....

I think the X fader really sucks the fun out of it. On Dream mode, the X is the depth of the vibrato, according to the manual. Ok well there’s a depth knob right above it, so that’s already confusing. I’m also tired of these “X” or “Control 1” labels on pedals when it seems simple enough to place the functions on the enclosure. This is the same reason I stopped using the Walrus M1 - it has too many secondary functions that require you to keep referring to the manual. I think Hologram has shown how much easier pedals are to use when you just put everything on the enclosure. I digress; going back to the Sloer- there is a nice long horizontal area where “X” appears where they could have just written: Vibrato / Shimmer / Diffusion / -1 Octave / Predelay. That would’ve made it so much more fun to use. Then there’s this stretch fader: it makes sense moving the fader to the left since it slows the reverb down, makes it darker and adds a lo-fi artifact. But what is it doing exactly when you move it to the right? Pitching it up? Speeding it up? Both? Not even the manual will tell you. As for the Sustain button, it’s fantastic except that it is only latching in Dream mode. If you’re using this on a studio desktop rather than keeping it on the floor, the latching option is crucial. I have no need for these sustain options if I have to occupy a hand doing it. Ok lastly, and this is just a matter of opinion, I really did not like the way the Mix knob affected the sound. It makes the reverb signal louder and the dry signal quieter. I think this is pretty common in general, but I’ve been using the Catalinbread Soft Focus lately, and I muuuuch prefer the way the Mix knob smears the wet and dry together. Maybe this has to do with parallel processing or something; I’m not sure but I ask everyone to try both and tell me they don’t agree. Thanks for allowing my rant. Hope this helps at least 1 person with GAS to take this one out of their cart and be happy with what they already have 😅

Thanks for your details thoughts on your take on the pedal. I think the more people hear from others the more they can make an informed decision for themselves. I’d add/adjust just two things: The depth control on the vibrato (X fader) adjust the depth of the vibrato in the reverb. The Depth knob would adjust the depth of the reverb overall. Stretch is very similar to the clock knob on the Chase Bliss Mood. Lower settings are more lo-fi with more clock noise and longer decay times available. Higher settings are more hi-fi with less clock noise and shorter decay times available. Overall based on your thoughts on the Slöer, I’d recommend looking at the MercuryX. Bigger and a little more costly, but heaps more options and control. Happy reverbing!

@@thepedalcollaborative Thanks - I’ve been thinking about MercuryX! I think the Stretch makes sense to me now. I’ll just have to tinker with it a little more. As for Depth - the manual says it controls the “amount of modulation.” So if the X controls the depth of the vibrato, and the Depth controls the amount of modulation, that still sounds redundant. Guess I just have to twist knobs and see if I can hear what it’s doing. If Depth is simply the depth of the reverb, as you say, I’m still not sure what that means. Density? Diffusion? Maybe I’m just not well versed enough on these things.

@gigaha ok so now I’m second guessing myself here! The Slöer has moved on at this point, but let me dig into the manual and see if I can refresh my memory better! I definitely don’t want to lead you astray with wrong information!

@@thepedalcollaborative lol please don’t worry about it. You did a great review and I’m nitpicking at this point. Ultimately this just isn’t the reverb for me, but it’s an interesting little device. Thanks for the replies.
@thepedalcollaborative

@gigaha ok fair enough…BUT I was at my buddies tonight who has a Slöer and I figured it out. 🤣 I don’t know exactly where in the reverb signal path the vibrato is, so this explanation is hypothetical. Imagine the signal path of the reverb is: dry input > pretank > feedback loop > reverb output (slightly basing this on my usage of the MercuryX and how my brain thinks linearly on this.) If the vibrato is placed in the pretank before the reverb, the X fader is adjusting the depth there. It sets the max vibrato that is being fed into the reverb. The Depth knob is controlling the depth of the reverb itself. Technically then the Depth knob is adjusting the depth of the vibrato, but only on a macro scale as the amount of vibrato going into the reverb is adjusted by the X fader. Nitpicking or not you got me curious and I wanted to know too!!
