This is a superior educational video which highlights issues which every jazz guitar player faces. For years I failed to adequately address any of the three problems. The answer for me the past year has been CGA. Chase Maddox is a uniquely talented jazz guitar teacher and his system provides videos but more importantly his lessons are live. Another iappealing feature is his immediate availability to assist the CGA members. My playing has improved more the past year than the previous ten and I am having more fun, especially when I can learn and share with other CGA members. The return on investment for me has been astonishing, and I look forward to 2024.

Great advice. The progression of songs is my greatest frustration with teachers. They often start with a piece that is far too complicated and throws too many concepts at you.

Thanks for watching! It was a big frustration for me as well, so I eventually decided to organize all of this info.

Exactly. This overload does not help at all !!! And people get frustrated, spend too many hours without any real progress. Then even before we have the tune learned really well many teachers would give you another one to learn. Like... how can you not see, that easy tunes are way more beneficial ? Id rather have 3 easy tunes that i know really well than learning 10 difficult standatds and in the end cant play really well none of them.

Great advice here - you need to build on internalised songs, feedback and experience but always keep it melodic.

Great video Chase. I'm currently building a new practice routine, so this has been hugely inspiring. Can you post the link to your ordered 50 Jazz Tunes? I'd love to see the list.

I used to get into heated arguments with folks online about the importance of teachers. Quite a few people would rather spend that money on new gear and vintage guitars rather than investing in lessons. That's why I commend you for still rocking that red Ibanez--a great guitar that proves that you don't need a vintage 175 to play jazz "correctly". I still play my modified Eastman AR 803--even with all the money I put into that guitar, it is still less than I've spent on private lessons with great teachers. Here is my quibble. I think there is danger to the whole concept of ranking songs. I used to rank songs and I fell into the habit of saying "I don't want to play 'Satin Doll' anymore, that's an easy tune. I better not try and practice 'So What' anymore, because it's too easy to call on a jam session." My current teacher has gotten me out of that habit. Songs are not "easy" or "hard"--they are songs, and many of these "easy tunes" are jazz STANDARDS (italics don't seem to work when I comment, not yelling). Each tune has equal opportunity to teach us something new--regardless of how "easy" they might seem. Look at "Satin Doll", for instance. Easy tune, right? Then why do so many amateur musicians play that tune so horribly? Maybe that tune isn't so easy. Same with Autumn Leaves. Easy? Can you play that tune on the level of Miles Davis or Cannonball Adderley? Granted, starting with Giant Steps is ill-advised--but the antithesis is also true. Food for thought. Thank you for echoing the importance of getting a teacher or mentor. I still seek out the best teachers and mentors, 20 years into my jazz studies. And if you can't afford private lessons--find the best musicians in your area to play music. Jazz is social music--and nothing tells you that you really don't know a tune like trying to play it through with your musician friends. There is always a new perspective to help you hone your craft, and feedback from an actual human--face to face or via videocall--is still better than the anonymous feedback from "experts" on the internet--like me! Pot calling the kettle black 😆

I take your point about ranking tunes for performing, but I’m strictly talking about ranking them in the context of what’s best for learning. There are still MANY more considerations to account for when ordering tunes for learning, including the tempo, key, melody, and rhythm. I would also disagree that “Satin Doll” is an ‘easy’ tune because of how many ii-V-I progressions in multiple keys you’d have to internalize. Check out my previous videos on the Master Standards Blueprint for more of my thoughts on this topic 👍

@@ChaseMaddox Good. I was basing my comment on how tunes were typically ranked in the past. Apologies. Sent you an email, by the way ;)
