When you are a single soldier living in the Army barracks there are some things you need and some that you don't. I want to explain 3 specific things that you dont need in the barracks in the Army.

Good day again in the Dark ages of 1988 -1992, all army soldier were provided with a bed, night table, desk with a chair, and a wall locker. Some bought foldable card table too. The saying was if you could put it your wall looker, then you could have it. I had a high end bicycle that I had to lock up to my wall looker when I was in the field. We all had TVs and portable stereo that we could put in our wall locker. When we went to the field and the room was not packed up , the room was clean out by the command. I was talked to about my bike many times. But it was always secured to my wall looker. Chris thank you for the your input into the soldier life and living area. Fantastic stuff sir.

Nine year MP, worked a lot of night shift. Definitely recommend the headphones. Both out of consideration to other Soldiers living in the bricks, but- we will also never come bug you about turning down your headphones.

I was in during the 90s. Everybody had big, loud stereos and couches. There was always a party going on, and whenever I walked by, I got invited in for a beer. 🍻

The one thing you have to have living in the barracks, is RESPECT!!! Troops living in the barracks, come from all walks of life. They come from all sorts of backgrounds. While I was in Germany, I was assigned to an MP unit, where those who work different duty shifts. Your day, is their night, etc. Our supply clerk had NO REPECT for those of us, who were not party animals. He thought that if he wanted to party with the loud music, everyone should. He came home from the NCO club one night and was hungry. He put fish sticks in the oven in the kitchen that was at the end of the hall and proceeded to pass out. Needless to say, having the smoke alarms in the building go off, and 3 German Feuerwehr trucks show up with sirens blaring at 0230, was not fun... Worst part of the situation, was the 1SG and commander thought it was funny! Yes, he was a BLUE FALCON!!!

50 years ago the team I was on had our own 10 man barracks. There was a TV furnished by the company we worked for. If you were lucky you might have a chance to watch it two out of five weeks. It was more like three days out of five weeks. Gone two weeks or a little more, three to five days to recouver s little and start training for two weeks for the next trip. Rules were no wives, no girl friends and no fooling around when we went somewhare. Life was fun at 18.

Wow, things have really changed I was stationed in Mainz Germany with the 8th Infantry Division in 1976. Had metal wall lockers double bunked with six people in the room. The bunks were about 2 ft from each other, room for nothing else. We did have a small refrigerator. Community shower and bathroom. I'm glad that things have changed for the better.

When I was in the active duty U.S. Army I absolutely loved my barracks room. I was in Germany and we had really old barracks that were made in the 1940’s but there was no 2 bedroom with a common area. It was just regular rooms like an apartment and the room came with a refrigerator, bed, desk and chair, microwave, sinc, shelves and closet area. It didn’t come with a washer and dryer but it could have been worse right. Those were downstairs. I loved it because from what I’ve seen on KZbin many bedrooms don’t have all that stuff because it’s in the common area where you have to share. Fu$& that. Those German windows were really cool to.

A new roommate can be put in your room at any time without notice, and you will have to rearrange everything to accommodate that roommate and you may end up having to get rid of some of your extra items like furniture (I've known that to happen to some people). Also, you can be forced to move at any time (also without notice) and the space you are moving to may not be able to accommodate your stuff.

What Places are they sharing living space still? If its common area space then the Best advice is to not chance or add anything other than maybe dishes, but I haven't seen anything other than temporary quarters where you are sharing with your roommate. But I have seen people make common area mistakes too.

The big rules that we had to live by when I was in the barracks in the 70's and 80's was that you had to be able to pack it in your wall locker if you got deployed. That said , back then there were no "big" tv's like they have today. Most of us just watched tv in the dayroom as there were only 3 channels anyway (before cable was available) There were many of us that had really nice stereos - too loud in hindsight. I would say given the limited space a regular sized TV would be good. I did have a Lazy-Boy recliner though. No room for a full couch or coffee table etc. You do not need a microwave as there will be one in the dayroom. I did have a coffee pot though. TBH you do not need a lot of stuff while living in the barracks. Nowadays I would say a young soldier needs something for entertainment (TV, Stereo, Video Game Console) maybe a nice chair, and probably will have a computer.) You have to be careful with your money, because it can slip through your fingers as fast as anything.

Those who are going to college living in dorms/ residents halls: same exact concepts. TVs I’d suggest no more than 32 inches (for college residence halls). And regardless know your space before you bring stuff in.

You ! keep your self out of the US. Military. Now hear this You MUST register for the Selective Service Act "Draft" however that is your only legal obligation to the Federal Government. Now if Congress reinstates Induction to the Military "called up" Them you have to make a decision to serve or not, if not expect the full weight of the US Federal Government on you. Vietnam veteran here. I could write a book about these past 50 + yrs. Long story short The Federal Government tossed me under the bus. Not just me but a whole bunch of other Veterans. I was proud to take that Oath, in 1971. By 1973 I wished I had not. ☮️ Out.

It can be a good way to get on track. Maybe do 4 years and get out and go to school or stay in longer. You just have to make sure you do lots of research into the lifestyle and everything else so you don't get yourself into something you hate and now your stuck for 4 years or what ever.

Fun off-topic fact: The measurement of TV's are the only one that is Imperial across the globe. 99% of the world use metrics. When I go and buy a new (Screen really rather than TV) Will it be an 42" for the bedroom, or A 55"? /Sweden

Chris ! I need you to update the 35M spotlight please. I’m hearing conflicting reports from my recruiters but I get the sense that I won’t be guaranteed a 35M spot when I sign my 35W contract. PLEASE DO SOME DIGGING FOR ME. I know your contacts won’t try and sugarcoat it

If you sign a 35W contract then you will become a 35W. You would not have an opportunity to become a 35M until the last year of your contract if you try to reclass but even then it's still not guaranteed. If you want to be guaranteed 35M you need your contract to be for that MOS. They don't have to guarantee anything that is not in your contract.

Eh. Maybe. The hard part is a lot of barracks have concrete walls and if they don't then it would depend on if leadership is ok with the soldier putting holes in the wall.

I lived in the BOQ. I never had a tv or a couch. I was glad to have a place to sleep. I was tdy so often that they took my bunk. I slept on the floor. 😊

Everything is now furnished so you won't need to buy anything except a TV. You and your roommate may set up the room so you can have a big TV. Don't listen to this guy that didn't want to do the full 20.
