I was in the army 1980-1983. Our PT uniform was our fatigues and boots! It wasn't until around 1982 that were even allowed running shoes.

I was in during the 90s. The uniform change that I would make is to go back to black leather boots that you had to polish every day. ⚫️

I was in most of the 80's and early 90's and i still feel the BDU's and the class A dress uniform was the best looking ever for both not being bias just my opinion. PT uniforms changed with the units i was in. While being a commo guy in an Artillery unit we had these yellow (banana pt Suits) All yellow and ugly. Other units you wore whatever. For a short time in hot weather units were we not issued ( We had the option to buy) Jungle fatigues like they had in Vietnam including jungle boots which i still have but don't fit in lol. They were nice and light and inexpensive.

@@rumrain838cause black boots are better, I can also sew today because of non Velcro patches 25 years ago. I can iron a seam line in a pair of pants that is sharp enough to stand the pants by themselves, with the help of stayflo. What’s stayflo I bet you’re askin. Pre afghan conflict army was different. Back when standards were high.

I miss wearing the beret with the bdu’s it made telling post cadre apart from trainees easier and was a pride thing for us especially if you were airborne.

"Winter" PTs are anything other than warm. I was never stationed in necessarily cold areas but going through Drill Sergeant School at Fort Jackson during the winter sucked. Of course, the intent is to generate body heat, and a good run will make you regret wearing long sleeves, jackets, and especially pants really quick. The thing is, you have to cool down eventually, and unless you're given a quick release to get changed, all that sweat makes it worse. I enlisted right after the old sweats with hoodie were replaced by the IPFU. We got different sweats for the first part of OSUT training, which helped identify us as Trainees and didn't cost anywhere near as much as the IPFU. The sweats were warm until they got wet, while the IPFU at least blocked the wind and had thicker t-shirts. The newer black APFU is like wearing a ventilated trash bag over a lingerie shirt. Wind cuts through it, and there's no heat retention. The Improved Hot Weather Uniform (alternate wear for the OCPs) is probably the best combat uniform I wore. I bought some extra components just before retiring, despite having loads of OCP, Multicam, ACU, and even BDU and DCU pants and jackets. It's lightweight, comfortable, and seems to be cut just right for me.
