Dan when it comes to shopping for food it would probably be best to allow her to take the lead. As a restaurant owner, I can tell she knows what she's talking about. You're both lucky to have each other.

Many of the countries that people are interested in retiring in, have low labour costs. Sometimes it's worth it just to have a maid come 3x per week not only for cleaning, but also to get groceries and batch cook a bunch of local meals. Especially true if you're on a restrictive diet. If you don't eat gluten or industrial seed oils, you will find it hard to eat out. Many of these countries have a maid or gardener who works for you all day for around $10. Usually these workers are helping out their families back home with this money and you make a big difference for their entire family.

A silly comment that I have, is the light music in the background reminds me of the warning that they used to have on talk shows like Johnny Carson that a commercial break was coming up.

Having started to travel in the late 70s all this stuff was second nature, as there wasn't really any options back then. Buying a kero stove, going to local markets, having locals teach you how to cook the local food, and being curious. Why travel if you want what you have at home? Stay there. And don't always ask (about food), If someone says try it, go for it. What have you to lose? A bit of tummy ache if you are unlucky. And don't always ask after (eating dog, monkey brains, snakes blood etc.) Sometimes you don't want to know, unless you want to brag to your mates back home. Not that you get these opportunities anymore. Love your channels. I am rebooting my vagabond nature, thanks for the information and inspriration!!!

On transportation, if the city has a tour bus, I always take it. Yes, some think they are cheesy, but I lighten up to enjoy the tour guides that work hard to make the tour, fun and informative. But more importantly, it gets me away from my hotel to see other areas of the city miles away. I make note of what seems interesting and then force myself to study the map and use public transportation to go back. I learn and see so much more of the city, by letting my brain work as opposed to sitting in back of a cab, Uber or grab.

Japan can be very pricey. If you want a quick, inexpensive bite to eat, try the basement of the department stores. Can be a bargain compared to full street level restaurants.

Excellent video Qiand and Dan, a big concern I have is that I'm aware that best prices can be negotiated face to face instead of website but there is no receipt or proof of payment. What if I pay for 30 days and the owner tells me to vacate in 5 days, I have lost money and the accommodation. How to deal with this?

Eating local food is an excellent suggestion but some of us have health restrictions, in this case how do you know what they are putting in the food such as animal internal meats? I can’t eat these but very much love to sample local foods, this has always been an important restriction so I mostly eat vegetable street food. Great video any suggestions would be appreciated…❤

As always, great info guys. If I can add, as a traveller, i've never spent more than $1500us per month in any worldwide country & that includes everything, accommodation, food, all travel costs, be in flights, local transport or scooter hire/fuel. I eat local foods most of the time but now & again western foods. I visit various attractions, some at cost, some not. I help a little bit in poorer countries. I don't miss anything but i don't waste money on needless stuff or fancy overpriced coffee shops or restaurants. Mostly I travel on around $1,000- $1,200pm in Asian countries.

You can also get western food quite cheap in Chiang Mai if you are aware on picking the right restaurant, so you can easily get a quality pizza for 99 Bath on the foodcourt in Maya Mall, so in general local food is cheaper, but sometimes western food is not far behind. But if you are unconscious and just eat western not minding the price then it will get very expensive fast! So ask yourself this question? How can i get food at a wery cheap price in this place as well, you will often be supriced if you are seacring a bit :)
