The fact that old rock picker is still working with rotten tires and no maintenance 30 years later is a testament to how things were built back then.

It's had maintenance, theirs a video of chet and Dougo doing maintenance on it lol
@asquithmainlines699 Жыл бұрын
@@cw93711 I remember them doing some repairs but Chet clearly said the bearings hadn’t been serviced in thirty years. There is a difference between repairs and maintenance. Regular maintenance reduces breakdowns. If he had put new tires on and done the bearings this most likely would not have happened. He probably spent more money on window tint this year than that rock picker.

@@asquithmainlines699 since I grew up as 5th generation farmer on a large cash crop farm I know the difference. But have you priced tires for something like a rock picker or well any farm equipment other than the regular pickups. You pretty much run them tell they die especially on something like the rock picker that you don't even use every year. You sound like another poster who said you should have several extra tires already mounted for the planter, digger etc, without realizing they they use different sized rims and tires in many cases and the cost involved to have them sit around and age since if you did that they you simply wouldn't have tire problems. And if you want to complain about a lack of a maintenance program on a farm, Larson farms would not be the farm to do so. As for that old rock picker I am pretty sure Chet is hoping it dies, Dougo thinks it's good for another 30 years and others are indifferent to it on the farm. It's had maintenance over the last 30 years. They spend 1 video working on it. I am sure they have some other maintenance that never made the videos since chet started the channel in 2015 and even before the channel was started. I know we didn't take wheel bearing apart to grease them. We waited for them to fail them replaced the bearing on something like that. Only tractors and combines get a ton of preventative maintenance. You also only have so many hours in the day. You have to choose what you are going to work on. Replacing the tire and wheel bearing after it failed on the rock picker cost less then if they replaced the tire with new tires every 7 years when they were to old under federal law. But in the end that tire wasn't 30 years old. No farm tire lasts that long. Tire might be 10 years old or so, but with being stored out side during parts of it's life in Minnesota summers and winters it wouldn't make it 30 years as it would dry rot before that unless it was never used. My families farm was slightly south of theirs but in Wisconsin. So I know the weather very good.

One question I no longer ask is "What else can go wrong?". I know I will find out soon enough, whether I want to or not!! Life is a series of recoveries. And when you are a farmer, and have so many things going on, there are a LOT of recoveries!! I enjoy going through those recoveries with you. I see and learn a lot. Thanks for taking us all along. That drone footage was awesome. The editing there is remarkable!! THAT is a super piece of great work!! MY compliments to the editor!!

LOL I have a suggestion guys for the old rock picker it is time to do either of two things park it back in the trees or wash it up and give it to a museum. Then buy or rent a two wing rock rake . Rake the small stones n a rows and pick them up with a regular rock picker . This would save time and energy on your part. Love the videos

I love hearing about the Swede’s ground. I’m a huge believer in owner operator partnerships, rather than employer-employee scenario’s. 2 of the 5 farmers we have actually have land, and will earn land after 20 years of farming with us. Plus whatever they can buy or rent along the way. I look at my operation as a bunch of little farms that farm together for the economics of scale. My 7 kids, my farmer partners, and one day their kids. Economy of scale with the benefits of a small, nimble, can pivot instantly, modular family farm all wrapped up in one entity.

Hello Chet mate , from Indiana lived on a small 10 acre dairy and beef and pig farm but help our neighbors with on 45 hundred acre dairy and pig and beef farm which is in different locations . We always check all equipment an greased and gas everything got fertilizer an seed planters ready . You’ll always have something to fix on one or two equipment’s never ending job. Chet you never fell to amaze me on how you manage the going and coming keeping equipment filled and keeping ahead of the other one’s working in the fields . Keep up the good work chill or take a breather keep on going that is what Farmer’s do . Have a wonderful weekend.

Getting awful fancy with your editing Chet!!! Great work. I caught Dougo waving at the drone. Lol. Went back to see it again. Chuckled a bit. Glad the new help us enjoying himself. Have to say, rock picking over here in eastern NY is by far not as bad as we always think. We do it after harvest in the fall after we do our fall tillage and again in spring. Always more rock to get. One year I hope to be able to just till, plant and harvest without all that nonsense. Lol. You know as well as I do.......pipe dreams for sure.

I always find it sill when we call a pc of equipment our pride of the farm when its working and a POS when its not.
