Love it. Agree with all of this feedback. Hill country hunter most of my life, here. I would only differ that a long "feature-less" ridge IS productive and not to be overlooked. It will typically offer you an awesome saddle or narrow crossing on top SOMEWHERE that bucks almost always use to cover ground efficiently when cruising and scent checking the upper 3rd of hills to cover all bedding areas on opposite sides of ridges- especially in the mornings with thermals rising and does bedding on the sunny, warm south/eastern facing slopes. Bucks love cruising those bedding edges, criss-crossing ridges, while staying high. Tertiary (3rd finger) ridges are money for buck beds themselves. Great chat guys.

Lived here in Kentucky for years now, that 'bowl' you're talking about is called the head of a hollow...

So I have a question. Let’s say a buck is bedded on a bench below a ridge with wind to his back, when he goes to leave the bed (ideally he’ll turn around and walk with the wind in his face) but is this normally the case or do people or you see the buck ever walk with the direction of the bed? I understand it depends what’s in the area and where his destination is. Jumped a buck here in WV hill country that was this exact scenario on the edge of thick cover and open hard woods, when he left the bed it was a soft bump as I created the high wall he didn’t snort and went out the hill with the wind to his back. I’m wondering what he would’ve done if I hadn’t bumped him, just looking for input and ideas. This piece is public that’s very thick and hard to navigate, I accessed from the back side on a small sliver of public that meets the road that not many people know of.

Its hard to tell what he would have done. But more than likely he would move into the wind. He was just getting away from you at the time. He had been there long enough probably to go ahead say its safe and run out the mountain until he got away from you

According to 3 collared deer studies I’ve looked through research on it’s just natural movement during the rut period. Even on completely unpressured game preserves. I think it has to do with the fact that all the thermals are in full swing at that point when you have a more vertical sun as opposed to an east or west sun. They are just more confident in their ability to scent check scrapes and does in general. Again this is my theory but the movement is proven.
