I thoroughly enjoy listening to your suggestions and playing tips on your KZbin channel. I’m 76 years old and I have played the piano for many years. I discovered your channel a few years ago and you have inspired me to continue practicing pieces from my teen years and learning new skills by challenging myself. Your 3 tips on motivation are encouraging and beneficial. I have found that playing the piano and trying to memorize pieces is a way of aging beautifully. Thank you for your encouragement.

Bro Josh, U are one of those who give me huge motivation; especially when it comes to practicing on certain pieces of Music,,, I am on a holiday in Thailand right now and I'm getting help from a Music teacher here for one of my top favorite pieces by J.S Bach (Prelude and Fugue in A minor, BWV 543). Being a perfectionist gives me hard time; particularly when wanting to play a piece at the same original speed. Many thx again for your support and motivating spirit,,, Blessings Sam ♥️🎵✌🏻

What is your opinion on methods such as RCM or ABRSM? Do you think completing a diploma exam is any indicator that someone is a good pianist or do you not believe in exams much?

I watch these all the time, and I especially liked this one (which I would normally have seen/heard had you not specially included it here in KZbin). I liked your advice to the guy who wants to be famous, to focus instead on determining what sort of repertoire he wants to work at acquiring the chops to play at performance level, and to find some mentors to gain inspo from, even if they're far-away KZbinrs or Instagramers. I wonder if he might also benefit from an introduction to the business side of local performing where he is, to get a feel for whether it's for him.

Hi, Josh! I was just wondering. My book of Bach preludes has some slight note changes from other people's scores online. I'm using "Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics Bach Well-Tempered Clavier for the Piano - Czerny", and Prelude VIII in Eb minor has some different rhythms in it. I don't know if you already made a video on this, but can I trust this book or should I look elsewhere, maybe IMSLP or another publisher? Thank you so much for all you do!

Ogany Supreme great question. I would get a Henle Edition. Wiener Urtext is also great. Schirmer tends to be less reliable, especially with older works

Nice video. This may be unimportant but it’s pretty important for me. How do you control breathing in fast passages? When I play fast passages, I tend to hold my breath and as a result, I get anxious and make mistakes. I haven’t seen any of this topic discussed a lot so maybe I can ask for advice here.

I think Josh won't mind my recommending a video by Graham Fitch on upping the tempo. Josh admires Graham and recently did a couple of Skype videos with him. They were great. I think the channel name is Pianist Magazine. If I can find the link in my history I'll post it for you. I was ill in bed last week and watched a lot! Edit: OK I found it! This is Part 1 kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6izlp-KnNGDis0 Once you are on the channel you should be able to find part 2 but if I come across it I will post that for you too. Good luck! Part 2 just popped up on my feed. Just proves YT is indeed watching everything we say and do. 🤔Here it is kzbin.info/www/bejne/pWqQfHikoKeqoMk

Josh, you really touched a nerve for me with this video. I hate to bring up the American presidential campaign, but we've got one candidate saying 'we need free tuition.' Been saying it for years now, but we're no closer. Meanwhile, thousands of people are creating so much amazing education in so many fields, free or affordable. In music: you, Rick Beato, Graham Fitch, Golandsky Institute, I could go on and on. I'm studying Japanese online -- free or affordable premium. Japanese Pod, Miku, Tae Kim, Yuta -- to the point where I spend as much time on Japanese social media as English-speaking. My online 'friend' recently rose to the equivalent of the Van Cliburn finals in the Japan breakdancing competition -- he's the first person I thought of in your list, a total ace, super hard-working. When he lost in the finals, it was crushing for him, but he bounced right back with such inspiring mental toughness. How is it possible that I can follow this guy on the other end of the world in another language? Because of free education. Python programming, MIT OpenCourseware, Udemy, Khan Academy, Cymatics, and on and on. Apps, podcasts, videos. I've had tons of formal education at the allegedly 'good schools', so I know what good education looks like. And it's the 'Evil System' that creates both the platform and the incentives for skilled people to offer free (and debt-free!) education. Some people just take action and make it happen.

Robert Dublowski Never too late Robert, I’m 69 and just starting to learn piano. It was a bucket list item for me. I have no desire to become a concert pianist but rather be able to enjoy and play some of the beautiful music out there. Patience is not a virtue for me but my motivation overrides my moments of doubt. Stay with it and you’ll look back and appreciate the journey.

Blind people do use the word "watch". I worked with a gentleman for a couple of months who used to enjoy going to movies and moreso the theatre. His partner would take him and quietly set the scene if he got a bit lost with what was happening. Or there was no dialogue going on. Amazingly acute hearing and "sense" he knew who was approaching him before they even spoke and he used to enjoy saying "Hello (name)" before they did.
