Hi, I am new to wood burning so I wondered what would be a first good image to burn. I am an artist in graphite so drawing is not a problem but this is a new experience that I want to master. Hey Mik! Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear you are enjoying the channel. As for getting started, I would start with something simple just so you can get a good feel for the heat/wood reactions. Basswood is a great place for you if you are wanting to transition to realistic burns. Starting with a simple design/silhouette will help you get used to how basswood burns. I also came from pencil drawing and I started with simple lettering templates and slowly started practicing with shading. Once I figured out the heat, I was able to use my drawing skills to start burning portraits. Something like this will help. The fish also has good silhouette lines. I like to do detailed silhouettes too. It's a good medium between lettering and shaded pieces. www.pyrocrafters.com/downloads/GoneFishin.pdf

Thanks Andrew! I did use a shader tip for 100% of this piece. And I use a shader tip for all my portraits. I find that the side of the shader works great for fur and the flat part works great for solid shades.

Hey Kim, my advice is to turn your heat down and build up to the shade you want. It’s easier to get control of the shades that way.

Basswood and poplar are my top two choices. Basswood is great for burning. It’s easy to find in arts and craft stores or online. Poplar is great for making your own canvases. I get my poplar planks from hone depot. Both woods are soft with light grains making them ideal for burning.

@@Pyrocrafters pine seems to be the wood of choice for most things over here. Then we have hardwood like oak and walnut but they're expensive

Gotcha. If you can order from Walnut hollow directly, they have a lot of great basswood options. www.walnuthollow.com/ There's also this website I have newly discovered from Canada. They have wood rounds and poplar sheets that would be good for burning. I'm going to put videos together soon with their wood. What heat setting do you use while doing fur like this?

I fluctuate from low to medium heat depending on what shade I’m trying to achieve. I don’t burn on high heats when I’m shading. It’s better to start a low heat and build up to the desired shade.

How do you change the image from image to stencil? All the things I have tried didn't work.

hey Jaden, I don't change it to a stencil. I just print the image to scale of my canvas, then trace the outlines. For images like this, I'll trace the outline of the fox, the nose, the eyes, and some of the dark areas. His ear is particularly dark, so I made sure to outline it. Then, when I get ready to burn, I just follow along with the image and try to replicate it as closely as possible.
