Another way is with sidechain compression (or ducking) where the vocal signal is used to turn the music down automatically. Unfortunately, Resolve's sidechain capabilities leave a lot to be desired. I have a feature request on the Resolve forum for VST Sidechaining because there are some great plugins for multiband ducking that currently cannot be used in Resolve. This is one of the reasons why I render all audio out of Resolve and use Reaper for mixing.

Dialogue is a very small part of my video work which concentrates on nature experience. I tend to use EQ on every track to bring focus to the frequencies that work best for the situation. Quite often I use compression too, perhaps to soften louder moments (a very close bird call for example). And once or twice I have used side-chain to create space for dialogue (which I learnt from you). I am still very much a beginner with audio but it is becoming a much more important part of my work. Yes, I am that guy who just simply reduced the volume of the music clip. And I felt darned proud that I learned how to do even that in Resolve. 😂🤣 Ironically, I thought it was a good method because it saved me from being one of those video makers who has their background music annoyingly loud whether they have dialog or not. Great tip. When I first started in 2003 I did the EQ thingy cause it was logical but since I was self taught I doubted the method. Then 8 tried lowering the volume but was never sure. Thank you for this video. I've been trying to fix my audio for a while so this came at a very good time. I have tinnitus which sometimes interferes with my hearing and making it hard for me to figure out what's wrong with my audio. With some of the examples your videos it's hard for me to hear a difference between the edited and unedited audio. Thanks! The ducking’works great. If it doesn’t sound good for you, try adjusting the attack, hold and release. Those are the settings that will make it sound good as far as how it ducks the music and how the music returns to normal volume. Looking pressure/ratio. Will adjust how quiet the music gets when it ducks. Many times I use the auto ducking in combination with some of these tips. 😁👍

I’m about to start learning on how to edit audio for my project in davinci (had some basic XP in Audition). Could you give we some tips on a proper order of audio processing? There’re steps on my list, maybe you can adjust the order based on your experience. Steps: 1. noise reduction 2. De-reverb 3. Equalizer 4. Compression (3:1) 5. Normalization (-6 or -3 dB) 6. The use of the EQ to stop mid range clashing is night and day. Definitely one I will be employing. Piano backing is always a problem when they start tinkling those higher notes around A6 and above. It might be worth combining cutting the EQ on the music track with boosting the same range on the vocal track?

Yeah, it makes a nice difference. Always depends on the vocal and the music track, but yeah you can always implement multiple strategies.

The line in the clip is a way for you to adjust the gain of the audio - it's the same as adjusting the volume slider in the inspector. Normalization sets the gain/volume of a clip based on the peaks or whatever method you choose to normalize by. Basically it's 2 different methods to set your audio levels.

Wow woulda never found that! Been a struggle balancing music and talk for my YT Vids. Trying to determine how good the new Deliver Page Audio Normalization for KZbin is working? I would have to do a "no adjustment to sound video" to determine I guess.

Glad video was helpful! I think the way you would work with the new normalization in the delivery page, is to make sure you set your project up for a given deliverable as far as the overall loudness is concerned. For example, if you’re delivering for KZbin set it up for -14 LUFS and make sure the LUFS levels meet KZbin standards. Then, if you wanted to change it for a different deliverable standard, that’s when I would use that normalization in the Deliver page. Otherwise, I would always make sure I edit my audio and get it where I want it to be before I deliver the project, which would basically mean I don’t need the normalization from the Deliver page. I think it’s only useful if you’re going from one deliverable requirement to another, and all of your audio is basically edited, and in a good spot to begin with. Normalizing audio really doesn’t help with things like compression and EQ, and overall enhancing the quality of your audio. It’s just bringing all your audio up to one given level, based on whatever preset you pick. For example, if you have a loud clap in your video, that loud clap part will be brought up to a certain level, but the rest your video still gonna be quiet. I hope this helps a little bit.

So I was doing my best already to get the sound nice and that struggle begins for me in OBS with Mic Filters and all and now these 3 videos I'm seeing from you on sound will get me to the next level. That combo is the biggest bang for your buck on any type of software that exists and I'm thinking about all the Autodesk stuff and everything. I can't believe how low the cost is. Thanks! My Sony ones wore out after over 20 years. Now I use Beyerdynamic DT 770 pros. I also Use the Sennheiser HD 280 pros. Both are very good and don’t break the bank.

Great tipps - thanks. BUT :) Turning down the volume is easy over time with Keyframes. So for the Intro I want to have the music in it's full glory - and than it's very convenient just to drop down the volume - is there a possibility to animate the effect of the stereoseperation or the eq as well? Otherwise music for full throttle on a different track and music for dialogue on another track and fading between those tow could be a solution? Thanks! Yes, keyframes are great and even better is to have Resolve auto duck the music for you. Both come in very handy. You can animate the separation effect. You'd use the automation tools to do it. I'll have some videos about automation out soon.

Unless you pan something right or left, you will be able to hear it in one headphone. For dialogue, it should be centered for the pan, typically. Unless you are trying to create something different in a scene, kind of how I did the dialogue in the recent StarWars sound design video I did.

Awesome tip but... on some audio tracks I don't have the spatial (Stereo Width) option. Does anyone know why? I have used what you said and it works great but again on some tracks that option is not available.

Awesome, glad you found the video about ducking. Absolutely you can use combinations of all these techniques. I do this often and it can work out really well. If you only need one technique, that works, but it’s nice to have more tools in the toolbelt for when you need them 😜

Ah, the zoom - here s a breakdown: Ctrl (cmd on Mac) + Middle Mouse Wheel = Pan right/left on the timeline Alt (option on Mac) + Middle Mouse Wheel = Zoom in/out horizontally on Timeline Shift + Middle Mouse Wheel = Zoom In/Out Vertically on Timeline Ctrl + Alt (Cmd + Option on Mac) = Zoom just the waveforms vertically - I don't like this one cause I feel like it throws me off. 😜 Hope this helps!

I have seen a couple of yours before but didn't bookmark them. Just thinking of a sub button off to the side that clicks.

Most of the subscribe buttons that I use are either motion graphics from Motion, Array, or a text effect from Motion VFX. Both assets just drop in the timeline and are good to go. I can’t remember off the top of my head if I have a video showing how to create one from scratch. 🤔

Hi! Just click, hold and drag on your trackpad and you can rotate the slider. It’s easier with a mouse, but very doable on a laptop.
