After switching to the NES controllers and still not having much luck, I found that the SNES controller has both a better D-Dad but also access to L+R for a quick restart instead of ZR+ZL for quitting and starting again from the menu.

I’ve been playing with the joy-cons, I really wish they would have let us remap the controls. I think it would be much better if Y=B and A=B.
