Every spring I start basil plants from seed to give to my family and friends, and when they get their plants, I send them a link to *this* video. Of all the dozens of videos on this topic, it is by far the best (and most expeditious) explanation of the proper way to harvest basil. I also share this in my gardening groups on social media whenever the topic of pruning basil comes up.

Nice to know I can cut the stem. I usually just cut the leaves off. My basil really grows wild but I do enjoy watching the bees pollinate the flower. Thanks.

Allowing basil to flower isn't actually that big of a deal as people make it out to be. However yeah you def should cut larger branches off vs just singular leaves!

Great quick job in explaining.👍Basil is medicinal everyone should have it in their kitchens. Makes a nice Thai dish good in salads.I’ve made basil oil by warming oil on low flame add basil to get Ute the oils strain after.

Thank you. I didn't realize you could cut it that far down.👍
@SoCalKevin
@SoCalKevin 4 жыл бұрын
you can actually cut basil plants down much farther. Once it has an established root system, you can prune down alllll the way to bottom of the stem as long as you see new growth. For example, if the plant is 6 inches tall, if you see new growth appear 1 inch from the bottom, you can prune everything above the new growth. Then in a few days those tiny shoots will be full leaves that are again putting out new growth.

1. Suddenly my sweet basil plant leaves r tasting bitter. Cut all the flowers etc. Any idea why? My new hobby. 2. How deep should the new pot be when I want to replant it as my present pot has 6 of them in the 3 inches diameter pot I got from the Nursery? 3. Not sure the 6 of them are independent plants or part of just one plant?

What about the lower leaves (the 2 sets not the off shoots). It appears all guides talk about it pruning down to the offshoots but do those lower leaves just never get harvested?

one of the stems on my basil plant, at the bottom is growing horizontally rather than up. it is doing this to get to the light as it is shaded by the upper leaves. i think i should cut it back to just in front of the node where it joins the main stem. Is that ok? thanks nick
