A time-only, non-date Rolex Submariner in steel will cost you, today, £5,450. You don’t need me to tell you that this is a sizeable amount of money-enough to start wondering if it’s worth getting several cheaper watches instead. Is it possible to get a varied, three-watch collection of high-quality watches for the budget? Well, we’ve certainly had a go; here it is, a three-watch collection for less than the price of an entry level Submariner.
Featured Watches:
Ball Engineer Master II Diver DM1020A
Frederique Constant Slimline FC-306G4S6B3
Junghans Meister Telemeter Chronoscope 027/3381.44

Ball makes rock solid, beautiful watches. Ball and Oris are both hard to beat at the price point. I think anyone getting into the watch hobby would be smart to go the 'three options' route. A sub just doesn't look appropriate in many instances (I don't like a diver with a suit). Getting three entry level pieces allows for flexibility without inflating the budget (whilst still allowing one to experience 'luxury' watches). As one's budget increases, and one discovers what type of pieces get the most wrist time, one can decide to replace and upgrade as appropriate (I often find that the shoes, jacket, watch, etc. I wear most often are not the ones I anticipated wearing most when they were purchased). I love dress watches, but as I never have occasion to wear one (I work in high tech in CA), I've never purchased one. So what I do have is a collection of divers, vintage inspired military and pilots watches that have gotten increasingly sophisticated over time. I feel bad that I have nearly a dozen sports watches and nothing to wear to a wedding, but I simply never wear a dress watch and know that even if I dropped $10K on a JLC Master, I'd likely not wear it.

A great video that makes you question values. Also a great selection of watches, with that Junghans taking the cake, I don't know if it's the way you filmed it, but those details really make it punch way above its category 😛

The Rolex Submariner always makes me think of the sales/marketing guy that's desperately trying to tell you he has "made it", but actually knows very little about watches. I like that Junghans one very much. If I had to have a Rolex, I'd go with an Oyster Perpetual Datejust with a nice fluted bezel. A much more interesting Rolex in my opinion.Or I'd get an IWC Ingenieur. Great video as always. Thank you.

@@melody3741 it's cos of the change of form though, back in the day a sub was a worker's watch and was affordable, people didn't flex they had one. Nowadays it's a luxury trinket, sometimes made of precious metals such as white gold.

Excellent. We need more of these two watch or three watch collection videos. I wud have preferred a Frederique Constant slimline on a leather strap. I loved the Ball with the Tritium tubes. They say these last for almost 25 years. My 3 watch collection wud be a Grand Seiko Spring Drive SBGA029, a Longines Heritage 1935 and a Tudor Black Bay. Keep up the good work!!!

I would reconsider the Junghans, simply because the chronograph module will probably be prohibitively expensive to service or repair should something go wrong. There are plenty of watches using the Valjoux 7750 (or Sellita variant) that would be much easier to get serviced in the long term.

Hello watchfinder, Would you ever do a vintage Longines? Maybe a 13ZN or a 30L??? And how about GP? To answer the question you posed? For myself I prefer One good One than 3. However, I think other choices can be a Tudor, a modern Longines, a GS, an Oris, and a Montblanc. The decision of which to pick as dive, dress, and chrono can very depending on taste. Great alternatives and video!! Always great.

I have the Ball Taiwan Limited edition, which shares the same case as the one shown in the video. I must say, the case quality, especially the thread of the crown, does not come close to the Rolex Sub. I have a 16610 in my possession as well and over the course of 10 years, never had any issue with screwing/unscrewing the crown, but the Ball watch, I had to return the watch to the shop for repair because of bad threads in the crown, it will always get stuck half way in and it will work fine for a while after repair but ultimately resulting in the same issue. So if you are going to get 3 cheaper watches, I suggest everyone to just save their money and get a Rolex.

I'd go quality second hand... Something like: Speedy Professional Tin Tin Connie Pie Pan (cal 550's)/Cartier Tank Automatic Junghans Max Bill Chronoscope. I know there is no diver in this but it's getting harder to find affordable versions of these watches and soon they will all be to expensive to find. If you want a cool diver there are tonnes out there, the Sinn 103 St Sa BE Limited Edition is a banger, so is the Brietling Super Ocean A73310. ALSO! Don't forget all the awesome solid gold 70's & 80's dress watches!! I saw the most pretty AUDEMARS PIGUET and a ridiculous VACHERON CONSTANTIN on an auction site yesterday, both around the $2,000 - $2,500 mark if I had the cash I'd have got both without a second thought.
