I totally get it. Many months ago, was getting fed up of session / binge drinking watery shite just to destress either after work or on a weekend. Started delving into the bottles of beer in the supermarkets. The usual 4 for 6 quid shelves. Started getting in to it. Opened my eyes to beer and ale. Never heard of a 'porter' till I subscribed to this channel. Love your channel and try to watch all the new reviews. Very entertaining. Have now switched my drinking style from cheap and cheerful and plentiful, to quality, variety and taste. Find myself now actually tasting my beer and enjoying my drinking. Love it. Your channel is fab. Stone the Crows! 😝

I love craft beer and Im very much so a part of the craft beer movement, however I think credit needs to be given also to the brewers of the past as they have paved the way and without them, craft beer wouldnt be here today. I can see what your saying and i see both sides of the argument Simon!

Is it odd that this made me happy? No, because I agree with what is being said. I have experienced, these «confrontations» in my life, not as a Welshman who faces a leftover from a temperence movement working together with the pit, the church and brewery owners to keep production up and church attendence high in the 1800s and want that to stay the same, but as a consumer in Norway who has to live with beer being taxed to death because politicians long ago decided I need protection from myself, so we make sure beer extremely expensive and is all the same lager to keep production cost down because «hey, the punters are desperate enough to spend insane amounts on the devils drink to relax a bit this weekend anyway». I stopped going out with my workmates because we could never go to a pub with summat different than lager «because we dont want to spend our paychecks on that expensive weird shit you drink!» So now I leave them to their office parties, Carlsbergs and sweet cider and meet beer geeks like myself and have a jolly time of it and I don’t have to defend every beer I drink. Mind you, I’m not on your side of the bar having to listen to all that stuff. I remember thinking «I’ll have a Guinness, only thing they have thay isn’t a Carlsberg or Carling». Girl poured it in one go, and I said, «isn’t it supposed to be 2/3 then settle then the last 3rd?» I was told there wasn’t time for «theatrics» like that, so I said «so I’m getting shit beer not even poured right then?» Then I end up having to defend myself, even to my work mates. So yeah, I’ll shell out for that 11.5% imperial stout somewhere else, gladly, and I LOVE that you’re as passionate about this wonderful drink as you are Simon. Sorry, Morten ended up ranting a bit too here, but yeah, glad you’re on the side of beer Simon!

I love Belgian beer, Germanic beer, American beer and UK craft beer, but...... I work in construction not behind a desk and play rugby at the weekend and like to drink 7 pints on a weekend of malty traditional beer. I like beer with roasted malts and some crystal malt. If all beer was just 2 row and a pile US hops then that would be fucking boring too. There's room for both.
@nickwilliams84544 жыл бұрын
Agreed but I think the point is that you go in a British pub and there are typically 4 or 5 brown 4% beers. My heart sinks when I see that and do my usual ‘what have they got that’s good enough for me drink’ rather than having a choice of strong juicy IPAs or European doubles/triples

I enjoyed that rant. Don't despair, Simon, it takes a while to change a culture. In the early 80s (in the USA where I am from and still live) all beer and coffee were made to be exactly average and cheap. When I traveled abroad I had to endure the entirely justified mockery of American beer and coffee. The beer and coffee have improved a lot since then, but still, the number of cases of budweiser and miller in stores greatly outnumber the 6-packs of craft beers. One problem is that good beers are produced in small volumes (relative to budweiser and miller) which increases the price, while cheap, awful beers like budweiser and miller are produced in mile long factories (with lots of rice). Also, hops in the US are expensive because the number of acres planted with hops is limited, unfortunately. Chin up. Illegitimi non carborundum.

I'm in the restaurant business, and some days my customers drive me totally batty, and I totally lose it when I get home. I can understand your rant, and on those days I pop open something bigger to unwind, de-stress, and recover for the next day, and hope that I get good customers. That all being said, I do like my bigger, bolder beers. Some days, however, a can of Yuengling smuggled into my central Minnesota home just tastes amazing. Some days a bottle of Grain Belt Nordeast is what I want, and crave. Another day I feel like popping open a bottle of Surly Darkness. It all depends on my mood. All are good, it just depends on the day. Drink, enjoy, and be happy, no matter what it is. Do your best to recover from a shifty day at work, and go at it again.

I've had this conversation with my more traditional German, Bavarian-style brewer friend. Say it louder for the blokes in the back! I agree with you! At the same time, I've had plenty of Alchemist, Foam Brewers, Berlington Brew Co., Lawson's, Hills Farmstead IPAs. I'm now sipping a La Cumbre Elevated IPA and I am so happy to drink a traditional WEST COAST IPA! I love my hazy IPAs, they're always an absolute wonder, but I have to say to my friends in the US: Pleas don't forget about your Alpine Duet, Alpine Nelson, Pliny, Myrcenary, Dirt Wolf, Stone Ruination (even 2.0!) etc. Also, I'd love to emphasise that we do not get nearly as many great "real dark ale" CAMRA-style of beers. I can't get a Fuller's ESB here in Phoenix, AZ in the USA for the life of me some months. I do tend pick me up a 12 pk of Anchor Steam. I still crave those bread-y "English bitter"style beers at times. I still agree with you 100% - the session is much shorter now. You want a damn good beer to hit - whether I'm sipping it while reading or play games with friends at home. Or, pre-COVID, go to the bar / pub and have 2-3 imperial % beers with a meal and go home happy.

Funny enough growing up in the U.S. where the NEIPA Hazy craze has taken off and skyrocketed, and also being someone who started my craft beer journey with bottle conditioned Belgian beers I LOVE HAZY (emphasis on hazy) and high ABV beers! If I ever travel to the UK and wind up at your pub one day, by all means please feel free to knock the cask over wrestle to the ground, and then shake it up Before you poor my pint lol. And I think a rant is sometimes necessary and don't Mind it at all either. Cheers!

Hey Simon, it is obvious you are frustrated, but I don't think it is wise to talk like that about your costumers that in the end are paying for your paycheck at the end of the month. I do understand your position somewhat, since I moved from Belgium to Switzerland and every bar around here is owned by 1 of the 3 big breweries, the people here have that German mentality where they only drink beer from one of the 3 breweries and defend the brewery to boot if you say something bad about them. This is also the main reason I started homebrewing Belgian style beers at home. I would say, just let them have their 4% ABV beer, there is nothing wrong with that if it pays the bills.

I understand this is old, but I don't know why you want the brewer to drop the bitterness. It's an IPA... it's supposed to have bitterness. I don't see why there has to be one or the other when it comes to styles of beer. Why can't we have modern beer (Hazy IPA's, Higher ABV stouts) and still celebrate the cask tradition we have in the UK? I agree, if the brewers continue to only put milds and bitters in cask, they will soon go bust. Cask has been in double-digit decline for years and I think the only way to get it back to where it was is to put those modern styles in cask but that doesn't mean we have to eradicate the traditional styles, more options are a good thing.

Well said mate, feel the same living in a small town in Scotland. Have some amazing craft breweries right on my doorstep, Brewdog, 71 brewing company and Fierce to name a few, yet in all my local pubs all i can get is the usual mass produced tasteless pish and stuffy cask ales. But i feel people, particularly those of my generation are become wise that there is more to beer than that. Personally I think it's only a matter of time till such beers become a thing of the past. Keep up the awesome work bud, love watching your reviews! All the best.

Great video Simon. And a good illustration of how far craft beer still has to go before we finally do away with the mass produced crap still out there. Not sure if this was recorded after one too many beers, regardless though you need to get a grip. You can't expect consumers to indulge themselves in research or share the same passion you have for beer. We are individual people with individual tastes and preferences regarding taste, temperature, appearance etc. Expecting each person to be a connoisseur of whatever they're drinking is ridiculous and unfair. Just let it go and relax, choose a more important part of life to get wound up about..

I certainly think after that 6 years the price of beer and the cost of living has definitely stunted the growth in this type of beer.
