I think you could also use a fuse tap on the highbeam fuse as an alternative to the t-tap, if you're like me and have an aversion to cutting into the high beam wire.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!! I've been looking for a way to do this for at least 6 months (clearly I'm not an expert) and everything I've read/watched has either been too vague on the appropriate detail needed or too complex in explanation. Being able to combine the right level of knowledge in an easy-to-understand message (i.e. the KISS principle) is a real skill so many props and thanks, my friend! I'm excited to finally get my light bar wired up the way i wanted! Cheers!!

My led lightbar has a wireless, 3 brightness level & strobe switch. What if i wanted to hard wire and integrate these functions (or maybe simply a strobe mode switch and dimmer nob would be best?) into a set-up like this? What do you think the most logical and intuitive way to incorporate these functionalities into the factory light control system would be? Similar to your reverse light demonstration video, I think incorporating the lightbar into the factory high beam controls with a rocker panel switch might be the best approach, but with a few minor(🤞🏼) tweaks. Would it be possible to: A. Bypass the light bar's 3 intensity light modes, instead utilizing the factory dimmer wheel dial to also dim the light bar any time its on, while also; B. Wiring in a separate switch that simply toggles the strobe function on and off? C. If its not possible to wire the lightbar's intensity to the factory dimmer wheel, would it be best to simply wire a separate dimmer nob switch in parallel to the strobe switch and factory integrated rocker? Does this make any sense? Could you suggest a more efficient and intuitive approach or would one of the above hypothetical implementations work and which would you suggest I use? Knowing that I've watched both your headlight and reverse light videos, I'm also proficient with basic electrical terminology and capable of performing such procedures, could you suggest a general parts list and wiring procedure to which you believe to be the best solution? Your videos have already been most helpful. Any further guidance would be most appreciated!

Love the way you illustrate and show hands on with small scale mock ups!!! Super helpful. I've been struggling with a wiring puzzle. I want to set up a 3-way circuit for lights on my Jeep Overlander to control rock lights, rack lights, etc on the ground level from the rocker panel and/or rear of jeep. But also from up top in the tent. Allowing me to illuminate the ground/area but be able to switch off/on when up in the tent w/o having the switch off before going up top. Or climbing down the ladder in the dark in the middle of the night. Is this something you'd be interested in helping us wrap our head around? Thanks again for tuts!!

I've wired this same 3-position switch in tandem with my highbeams without any issue... until recently. (I used your video years ago. Thank you!) But I swapped out my stock headlights to LED, and now I'm getting a humming noise coming from the lightbar relay when I'm in tandem with my highbeams. After doing some research, it appears installating a capacitor would fix the humming. Are you familiar with this issue of relay humming or the installation of capacitors?

Yes you can run 2 light bars on this setup as long as your relay is rated to handle the current draw of the 2 lights, or you can use 2 relays. As for the diode, I've done a bunch of testing after making this video and found that the diode is not needed. I hope this answered your question. Thanks for watching!

@RockyXTV
@RockyXTV 2 жыл бұрын
You would need to find which wire in your harness is the "trigger" or "coil" wire & hook that one to your high beam. This way the relay/light bar is pulling its power from the battery & not your headlight. The trigger/coil wire pulls very little power, just enough to activate the relay, then the relay pulls power from the battery & sends it to the light bar. I hope that makes sense. This is only good if you don't plan on using the switch in your harness. Your light bar harness should still be hooked up to the + & - of your battery. You probably have 3 wires on the switch, one will be power coming into the switch, then power out of the switch going to the relay, then a ground if the switch lights up. You would be looking for the wire that sends power out to the relay, that wire would tap into your headlight.

Awesome video, so glad I found it for the same reasons as everyone else. Have subscribed and look forward to checking out your other vids. I want to wire up a switch like this in my car to an LED at the rear of a trailer. Want to be able to power the light independently and also have the option to turn it on when the tail (ignition) lights come on. The LED only draws 1.3A, so I plan to omit the relay. My plan is to connect switched battery + (inline fuse) to 3-way switch terminal 1. I'll tap in to the tail light wire at a point just before the tow vehicle 7-pin plug (car side) and connect to terminal 3. I plan on connecting the spare 12V wire on the car/trailer plug (reverse lights not used) between terminal 2 and the positive on the LED. Couple of questions: Will this work? And is the ground on the LED light the only one I need to earth (to trailer chassis)? Cheers Matt

I'll definitely see what I can do about the video, as for changing the color of the LED's unfortunately it's just easier to buy new switches. You can disassemble the switch and try to un-solder the LED and solder a new one in its place, but it's more likely to destroy the switch.

@RockyXTV
@RockyXTV 6 жыл бұрын
Diodes do have to go in a certain direction. You have what's called a Cathode and an Anode. The Cathode is the end with the silver band, current can only go through towards the silver band and won't go back the other way. As for the light bar, are you asking about the small one I have in the video? If so it's an 8" Hella Optilux 36 Watt light bar. Thanks for watching!

@RockyXTV
@RockyXTV 6 жыл бұрын
If you don't use a diode, theoretically you could go as many watts as your relay, fuse and wire could handle. Most standard relays are rated for 30 Amps constant and 40 part time. This would work out to about 400 Watts with one relay, now this would require some bigger wire though.

@ourbills9999
@ourbills9999 4 жыл бұрын
Great videos. Thank you. I was told to always use a relay where the relay’s coil is protected, internally, by a diode or a resistor. The reason, from what I understand, was that when an energized coil is de-energized, there is a magnetic field “collapse” that sends voltage (which can be orders of magnitude greater than the original voltage, albeit the current is milliamps) in the opposite direction to the original voltage direction in the relay. This can, apparently, disrupt voltage-sensitive components (such as a blind spot detection sensor) that are “upstream” from the relay. A relay whose coil is diode (or a resistor) protected prevents this.

After doing some research, it appears installating a capacitor would fix the humming. Are you familiar with this issue of relay humming or the installation of capacitors?

I wired up a 7-pin illuminated 3-way switch like you showed in the video and my light bar works exactly as it should but I can’t figure out how to make the switch LEDs turn on only when the switch is pressed in their direction. Currently the switch LED for the light bar only position is always on and the LED for the high beams position turns on and off with my high beam selector, regardless of the position of the 3-way switch. Is it possibly to have the switch LEDs turn on only when the switch is pressed? Or is this not possible because we are using the switch opposite of the way it was intended?

Can I just add 2 additional 108 watt led lights to my high beams by joining the positive leads to my high beam power wire and then the negative leads to my negative battery post if I just want some more light to come on with my high beams, or do I need to mess with adding a new resistor and fuse?
@RockyXTV
@RockyXTV 7 жыл бұрын
You could just tap into your high beams like you said, but you would need a relay. Even if they are LED you would need a relay for 108 watt lights, that much on just your high beam headlight relay wouldn't be good. Just use your high beam positive as the coil/trigger wire on a relay (pin 86) I hope that makes sense, thanks for watching!

You got it! Just make sure you use a relay and a fuse,(they are different things, I have to say that cause some people don"t know) If you don't use a relay you will burn up your headlight relay, switch or set your headlight wiring on fire. Your headlight wiring/system is not meant to support that kind of current.

Is it possible to have a normal led light bar switch, but have it do multiple operations. For instance, you have an led bar in the front of your vehicle and rear of your vehicle. Now, with the switch is it possible to push it in once and have the front bar turn on, push it again and have the front bar turn off but the rear bar turn on, push it again and now have both front and rear bars turned on at the same time, then push in switch once again and have both bars offs? There is more I’d like to have done, but that would be the basic operation of the switch if possible.

@RockyXTV
@RockyXTV 6 жыл бұрын
You would want to run a relay, otherwise you would be pulling all the extra power of the light bar through your headlight circuit. Wiring in a relay for your application would be fairly easy. I'll give you a short breakdown of the relay wiring. Pin#30 = Power to battery with a fuse, Pin#85 = Ground to chassis or battery, Pin#86 = Tap into your high beam power wire and lastly Pin#87 = to your light bar. This would cause your high beams to turn on the relay, the relay then pulls power from the battery instead of your headlights and sends it to the light bar. This way your headlight high beam is only acting as a "trigger/switch" for the relay. I hope that all makes sense, thanks for watching!

As it's convenient for switching on the led light bar on dark country roads rather than the awkwardly placed auxiliary switches in my vehicle.. Great job. Was just wondering what is the rating of the three way switch you've used? And how many wires have you got coming out of the light bar itself, mine seems to have only 2 wires
@RockyXTV
@RockyXTV 6 жыл бұрын
There are only 2 wires coming out of the light bar, Positive & Negative. The headlight is the one with 3 wires. As for the switch, the one shown in the video is rated for up to 50 Amps. You can use a better looking rocker style switch, you would just need to add another relay like I did in one of my other videos about aux reverse lights. Thanks for watching!

You'll need a test light or multi-meter to test for your high beam power wire, you can try looking it up, but I don't really trust many forums on electronic questions. You can solder into the wire, you can cut the wire and join them back together along with the new wire. There are multiple ways to tap into your high beam wire. I hope that answers your question, sorry I don't know what color your wire is, but thanks for watching!

This will cause your light bar to come on with HI beams if the switch is ON. If the switch is OFF, the light bar won't come on. You just need to be sure your switch is rated for enough amps, otherwise you'll need a relay. I hope that is the info you are looking for. Thanks for watching!

You can use the standard 2 way switch if you only want the light bar to come on at high beam. Otherwise leave the light bar switch in off position for normal high beam for those that don't want to have a 3 way switch and accidentally leave it on and drain your battery. Also wouldn't it be better using the current off the high beam to trigger the coil on the light bar relay? So you can mount the relay close to the light and not have a single line of wire going back to a switch inside the car. Just a thought.

They draw less than 2 amps, so it shouldn't actually be necessary, but should I add one anyway? I'm using Contura V switches rated for 20A

I have both of the KC lights you mentioned and yes the 644's come with a harness and relay. With such a low amp draw it is not completely necessary to use a relay, but I always do. I can't say if the 432's have a harness and relay as I have the 497 for the Jeep JK. I can say that the other 6" Gravity lights will get you in some trouble if you run them all the time, they do say legal on them, but they are very bright and throw light out very far, farther than my KC headlights and even my light bar. I'm still looking into your wiring, sorry I've been kinda' busy as of late, buy I am still looking into it for you.
