In this video I discuss three options for remote access to Blue Iris, the security camera software. The three options are: 1) Port forwarding 2) VPN 3) ZeroTier
Security is an important factor when deciding how you will connect remotely to your Blue Iris PC. Traditional port forwarding won't give you the same level of security as a VPN or ZeroTier.

Love your videos. You make it easy and give reasons for why things work the way they do. Would you do a tutorial for Code Project AI. I am having a hard time with ALPR and other modules. I don't know what to put in for capturing. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't .

This video has been around a while, and only has 18 comments? The instructions in this video worked. I am not using the blue iris client. Instead, I am using just a webpage. I added two icons to my home page on my android phone. One to access Blue Iris web page locally when I am logged into my local wifi at home. That first icon opens a webpage that points to the local machine by using the IP address of the Blue Iris machine on my local network. If I turn off my wifi access, that first icon no longer works (as expected). And the second icon goes to a webpage that points to a Zero Tier ip address. In the past I did the same thing with just port forwarding a port on my cable router to the blue iris machine. Port forwarding is kinda dangerous. And the ip address to my home may change. Very cool.

Hello Blue Iris Guru! :) Hope one day you can dedicate a video on how to add cameras from a different network. I'm really having a hard time on this. More power to you sir!

A basic solution I found was to dump jpgs to my one drive pictures folder, as long as you have sync on, you can check your one drive from your phone and see latest captures. I know there will be better options, but that is a really easy thing to set up and use to get some basic monitoring going.

Watching through this, it dawned on me that it would be great for Blue Iris to include support for ZeroTier or TailScale. Would be a great way to leap ahead of competitors and go beyond the tired old port forwarding options. When will these developers learn that it's not the 1990's anymore. LOL!

Great idea! Would be great if it was native. Yes, port forwarding is so 1999.

My company puts everything behind the VPN and it causes a LOT of issues because VPNs and file sharing (samba) don't work well together.

Thanks for the series, so helpful for newbies in blue iris. Did you try Tailscale for accessing blue iris?

I know this is an old video but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. On the BI instance that is connecting remotely is there a way to default to the remote connection father than local?

I'll be switching from Xfinity Internet to T-Mobile Home Internet at the end of this month. So there goes the port forwarding of my10 year old (but very reliable) Q-See 18 camera DVR. I'm playing around with ZeroTier, and am able to connect my Windows 10 PC's and even my Google Pixel 7 Pro.... But NOT my DVR. Would adding Blue Iris into the mix solve that problem???
@learnblueiris
@learnblueiris Жыл бұрын
Are your cameras IP cameras? You would have to move to using Blue Iris as your DVR (NVR) instead of your current DVR for Blue Iris to solve the problem. That said there might be an alternative. If you could find out if the T-Mobile router they give you can be in "bridge mode." Basically what this would allow you to do is use your own router with T-Mobile. By doing that, you could use a router that natively works with ZeroTier. If you did that, everything that was on the internal side (behind the router) would be accessible by ZeroTier clients.

@@learnblueiris Unfortunately the cameras are not IP. They simply send a raw video signal to the DVR which then does all the processing. Will have to find out if the other option that you mentioned is possible.

sounds like the remote wizard needs to be setup again inside of Blue Iris. Sounds like you can access very internal ip but not external ip. Sometimes this is a port issue. Sometimes it's best to try and establish using a service like No IP

Thanks for the info. I actually followed a different video you made to set up Zerotier. I successfully did that and my phone and computer are connected to Zerotier, but I can't connect to the network using the BI app. It can't connect to the server. Any suggestions?

people should know that Blue iris is extremely insecure out the box. The user and password are shared on any wifi network you might be on, whether public or at work. MUST use a VPN.
