the wall position worked for me, took about a week 2 hrs per day. if you can't move the shoulder then you won't move it later.posture and bowing will make you or break you. bowing correctly is 80 percent of the fiddle technique. when you don't have to struggle with the bowing the rest comes much easier and you make faster progress. practice practice practice. then practice some more!! everyday!!

Thanks for all the great videos. I only realised I had a big problem with straight bowing when I recorded myself from above. After experimenting with a few of your suggestions I found the best trick for me was to put a band-aid across the strings and bow on top of it. There is no sound of course, but it definitely helps keep you on track. You could probably make some tracks on the strings with a whiteboard marker too.

I recently sent away for and received my first violin (Glarry). I started watching your videos , never having played a violin before, and have used your playing techniques. I can honestly say they work and have helped me on my way to learning how to play. This is the only way I can learn how to play without spending tons of money on lessons. Thank you for putting out your videos, they are a God-send. Looking forward to watching more advanced tutorials as I gain more experience. Keep up the good work. Peace, out. :-)

I can't thank you enough for this video!! I was about to spend 15dls + shipping on one of those metallic things... I was kinda blue because my teacher said my violin does not have a bright sound, and that I needed to play very close to the bridge to get a descent sound. But i'm only a beginner and if I do that it sounds horrible! so i'll keep on playing in the middle and use the paper towers to improve. I will do my scalles in the mirror, etc... Yesssss!! thank youuuu!!!

thank you for this video. I am an adult beginner and I've been getting very frustrated because my bow always works it's way down to the bridge just when I really get going into playing a song. I was looking at some of those bow guides on Amazon, but I think I will try the paper method first. thanks again
@RameyRocks8 жыл бұрын
***** I know how you feel and my bowing sounds "chalky" or like a goose honking. It doesn't sound clear so it makes the songs sound bad. I don't know if I need new strings or a new bow or just a better violin, or if it is only me. So frustrating because I am actually learning to read the notes really well, first position of course.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I just dont really agree with these contraptions. Paper here and there is harmless, but when you start buying 'stabilizers' for the violin, it brings up a whole new set of issues. If you really cant control the bow to the point where you need these things, then something is seriously wrong. I DO NOT MEAN this rudely, but for yours (and everyone elses) sake as they hinder you so much more.
@RameyRocks8 жыл бұрын
***** I ordered the cheaper of the 2 they offered. the plastic one. It is crap. I want the metal one. My teacher hasn't helped me out in those areas either. But I haven't been in a few weeks because my hub is making pauments to him for a banjo and we cant afford classes and payments. He has never done anything for me except print sheet music.He doesn't even tell me to stand up, he has a chair in this tiny side room that only has room for his puter and chair and one other chair and a music stand. I am th one who started teaching myself to read notes. He was just printing sheet music showing finger positions. He hasn't even told me how to know when to bow up or down. Almost everything I know I have taught myself with books and you tube videos. I do want that other stabilizer to help me get used to bowing in the right spot. I mean what do you do when you are having to teach yourself?
@RameyRocks8 жыл бұрын
+Jessie Armstrong no I ordered that stabilizer last month before way before your comment telling me about it lol. The teachers a really nice older guy but yeah not a lot of guidance. He charges $25 for half an hour but he will let me stay longer if no one is after me. Plus he lets me lets me come in for a tuning anytime. Thanks for offering your help. So does the stabilizer help you get a good sound? What does your teacher think about you using it? I mean, how are you supposed to be able to read the notes, look at your fingers on the fingerboard, and be able to hold the bow in the right spot? Especially starting out? I mean if it is constantly sounding bad, it is SO discouraging.

The more that I watch your videos, the more disappointed I am in my teachers, because they never point out or taught any of these basic techniques for beginners! Believe me, I have learned so many important points that will make a world of a difference in my playing in a few short videos of yours than I have in over a year from different teachers! I'm going to have to search for a better teacher. Thanks a million!

You're welcome - its why I started my channel actually. Sadly there are an unsavoury amount of terrible teachers out there that shouldnt be teaching or who just are not that good at it, and so, I decided to put my money where my mouth was so to speak and create this channel where I can help people like you and put those bad teachers to shame! It also hopefully gives you an idea of what to look for in a teacher etc, and pick up some extra pointers from me too. Anyway, good luck in your new hunt :)

Hi Alison, my daughter has just moved up to the comprehensive school and was told to buy her own violin to practice at home so I got strait to work and found one on Ebay, my point is that it's a 1/2 size and my fingers are just way too big for the strings but I'm really hooked on them now and want to buy a full size one for myself but not sure if there is that much difference in the sizes from 1/2 to full size, I have already learn t so much from your videos and any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor10 жыл бұрын
***** YES! There is a huge difference between 1/2 and full size and it will make all the difference to your learning! I have no idea of your age, height etc etc so i couldnt honestly advise you over the internet like this as to what size you need, but you MUST get the right size of it will massively hinder your learning. Pop down to your local shop or ask someone you might know to help you choose what size you need. If you are an adult, then you will most likely need a full size one.
@MrGlendragon10 жыл бұрын
