Hi, Alison, thank you for posting this!! I used to play violin, viola, cello and contrabass, but did irreversible nerve damage years ago, which pretty much made my arm/fingers useless for asuch a delicate instrument... I already used a different methond, but now I can fix the posture, THANKS TO YOU!

Started out with a basic $75.00 Eastar 3/4 Violin i played that for the first few months i easily outgrew it because i could feel my left hand fingers quickly getting the grip of the neck. I started teaching myself how to do Vibrato and figured i needed a more high quality violin so i recently upgraded to a 4/4 model 250 Stradivarius. I can definitely tell the difference in sound and pitch the bow is definitely complimentary. It still feels difficult rotating my fingers on the strings.

I do follow your violin lessons but the bow hold is something I had to learn from different online teachers because I found yours wrong for my hand. I was fighting hard to make and keep it but it didn't work for me. My pinky kept locking, middle fingers were uncomfortable, fingers were slipping from their places and I kept ending holding the bow with just the tips of my fingers for some reason, I couldn't relax my hand. Finally I watched mr Perlman lesson on bow hold and a few others and figured out a way to hold it that works for me and still has my fingers placed in all the right places, except comparing to yours, my thumb goes opposite middle finger not between middle and ring finger, and my fingers are a bit more curved, not gripping and still slightly below the level of wrist but a bit less straight,I just find it more natural and relaxed for my hand. Anyways I'd recommend to anyone learning on their own to watch a few videos on how to hold a bow, try different holds and then decide which is best for their anatomy
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, well said! I think thats it isnt it - people just assume that my hold is automatically wrong, when its not, its just different as there are many different bow holds and if mine doesn't suit you, then you can tweak it until it does.
@Ysmir.
@Ysmir. 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor yes, it works for you so you prove it right with your playing. It can be wrong, or not entirely right, for a specific person though. I think it's mostly the length of fingers and the proportion of length between thumb and other fingers that decides what is more or less comfortable. I have small hands and it influences not only my ability to properly place fingers on strings but also my bow hold. I just have to take that into consideration and adjust what I learn from you or anyone else to my body because what is right for you, might not be right or possible for me

I've just picked up a student violin (hobby guitarist with some classical guitar/piano background) and I'm so excited about what you have to teach. Your videos I've seen have been great so far. I have one problem. Bilateral brachydactyly, or toe thumbs, both sides. My most distal joint is very mobile but my 2nd is fairly immobile but my thumbs move differently, and are up to 10mm shorter than average.

I've been playing for nearly 20 years, and I've realised I've got into bad habits (as you do with anything!) I don't think my finger positions on my bow were correct, I put all my fingers resting on top of the wood. So I've tried your technique of how it should be, and my goodness my hand does not want to do it, it's so uncomfortable! 😭 Need to get back to basics! Thanks for the videos ❤️

How can i tell for sure if I'm doing something wrong or if the violin has an issue? I seem to always hit multiple strings when trying to hit the A string. I'm on lesson 2 and I've gone back to lesson 1 cos of this! Its really frustrating because I can hit the other strings just fine. It is a cheap(ish) violin and I'm not sure if the bridge is the issue as I'm so inexperienced
@TheOnlineViolinTutor

Its likely to be the violin. This is why investing in a properly set up violin is imperative, or your learning will be hindered sadly.

My bowing only sounds good closer to the bridge. Any notes bowed below middle towards the fingerboard sounds awful and I can’t get any pure sound. Why is this? Also my violin has a shorter bridge than the normal taller ones. Could this be why?
