Learn how to change your eye color! From eye color changing eye drops to the latest eye color change surgery options, in this video Dr. Allen reviews how to change your eye color and the safety risks you need to know about.
I have had several patients and viewers alike ask me if it is possible to change your eye color. Thankfully, modern science has found several ways to change eye color, each with its own considerations for safety and effectiveness.
Eye Color Changing Eye Drops have emerged as a newer option, claiming to alter eye color gradually by either darkening or lightening the iris. However, the safety and effectiveness of these drops are still being researched, and many trending brands have been flagged for questionable safety issues. Potential side effects and long-term consequences of these color changing eye drops require further investigation before widespread use. Caution should be advised.
Eye Color Change Surgery provides a more permanent solution. Procedures such as iris implants involve inserting a colored silicone implant into the eye to change its hue. While this method has been US FDA approved for the treatment of some eye conditions, they are not without risks. As with all forms of invasive surgery, these procedures carry risks such as infection, inflammation, and other complications. Another option, is the newer keratopigmentation surgery, modern techniques involve using a laser procedure to create small channels within the cornea where colored pigments can be injected into layers of the cornea. While less invasive than implants and some publications reporting favorable safety profiles, it's not widely available, and its long-term effects are still being studied.
Colored Contact Lenses offer a reversible way to change your eye color. They come in a variety of colors and can be worn daily or for special occasions. However, it's essential to get a prescription from an eye care professional to ensure they fit properly and to minimize the risk of eye irritation or infection. Proper cleaning and maintenance of the lenses are also necessary to keep your eyes healthy.
Whichever method you choose, it's crucial to prioritize safety and consult with qualified professionals.

I’m very happy with my blue/grey eyes 😊 but I have an off topic question about my new progressive glasses, they aren’t my first pair but I’m having trouble with these, lots of distortion especially in that they make me feel shorter and most circles look oval. It’s very off putting. How long should I wait before these effects go away? Will they go away? I have been using them every day for almost 3 weeks. Is there a point by which I should go back and see if the prescription or build is correct? If I were to change my eye colour I would go orange like my cat!

Doctor, are colour contact lenses safe to wear if you have stage 4 cancer? (The cancer has only metastasised to bones, however, one of the sites named as it's "likes" is the fat/muscle at the back of the eye). Guessing you'd probably say "speak to your oncologist" but just wondering if there was much research? (Cancer: invasive lobular carcinoma of the breast, lymph nodes positive, metastases only visible/biopsied in bones so far)

I already had somewhat unusual-looking hazel eyes and one of them is much darker due to drops I was prescribed about seven years ago for elevated pressure in that eye. I only took the drops for two or three months, and the color change is still present and noticeable. It freaks some people out, but I don't mind it. My eye doctor took photos (with my permission) to share at a conference because I was her first patient who had only one eye treated and for whom the color change was so noticeable.

Wow, I can't believe anyone would risk their sight to do any of these. My own eyes have changed over my lifetime of 76 years, but it was totally natural as far as I know. @DoctorEyeHealth

I agree that there are many many things we don't yet understand in this world. That is why I try to keep an open mind about things. I have not seen any published science on diet but I imagine it could, in some way - as medications are derived from plant sources. Otherwise, melanin production on the iris is partially due to sympathetic innervation. And so perhaps changes to the autonomic nervous system could result in small changes over time. That is why people who develop horner's syndrome can lose pigment in the eye.

I only eat a small portion (113 grams) of protein I also dont drink alcohol anymore, either. I have also been doing yoga and meditation daily. I wonder as my body, mind, and spirit heal that this is changing acting my eye color. I am curious to know what might be the reason for significant change in eye colour. Note accoring to blood tests and Dr exam i dont appear to have cancer or disease.

Sorry to hear about your father’s passing. Very interesting to think how the eyes could change color with mood. I know if he had hazel eyes, perhaps the changes in mood as changed the tone or contraction of the iris muscles, and that showed a different part of the iris that had more blue pigment??

They offer “eye sizing” in Korea to get the exact measurements for colored contacts to suit your iris size. Colored contacts lenses are called “hon-hyeol” lenses. Hon-hyeol means “mixed blood/foreigner”. It’s considered attractive to look Eurasian in East Asia countries.

I use drops for glaucoma and was told my eyes would turn brown. I have green eyes, and the drops actually have only made them a very slightly darker shade of green. The funny thing about my eyes is that when they're irritated or I cry, they turn the same glowing color like the Hulk. I wouldn't change the color. My husband and seven of our kids have blue eyes and one has gray, so I enjoy having a different color than everyone else.

I had ICL almost 4 years ago now. I was wondering if they could change the color of my eyes by using a pigmented lens. Is this something that is available and/or in the works that you know of? I’m grateful for what ICL did for me as I got to the point, after 35+ years of wearing contacts, where my eyes started rejecting them. Just curious as to why this isn’t an option (unless it is).

Hey! I’m looking at getting ICl myself! But the lens for ICL is implanted behind the iris 👁️, so unfortunately it wouldn’t change the iris color. Iris implants can change the color but they carry their own risks too.

There are some brands out there. Custom ones we can have ordered. The downside is the tech is older and not super healthy for the eyes long term. (like I wouldn't personally wear them for over 1-3 hours). The reason for this, I believe, is economics. The machines that make modern contact lenses cost up to about 20-60 million dollars to design and make. And those machines also can wear down... so super expensive investment. And then the market for colored lenses is not huge...and then the market for not only colored lenses but ones for astigmatism??? and making them available at all powers and levels of astigmatism??? that's a very risky business model.

@DoctorEyeHealth I have a question for you. Every male in my father's side of the family, myself included, as far back as our family has been able to document it, has had eyes that change color on their own, beyond our control. Usually my eyes appear sort of a hazel color, but from time to time, they have been known to change between an almost sidewalk grey, a deep dark or bright blue, an odd dark red, and occasionally either a dark or bright green. It has been like that with all males in my father's side of the family, and no we aren't using contacts, or anything you mentioned in this video. I guess my question is, since this is clearly something genetic, in your professional opinion, could this be some kind of a mutation?

Sorry to hear that I did Smile surgery last year in the United States and it has ruined my vision at night time or dim settings. Its a honest shame that this has happened to us because of refractive surgeons greed. I don't think there will ever be a cure for us. Man how much I regret doing this surgery by far its the worst decision I have ever done. @DoctorEyeHealth I see why you never did refractive surgery, after having it done myself. I took it upon myself to learn and understand the whole anatomy of corneal structure and optical system because clearly these business men would ever inform their patients because anyone would walk out the clinic they run. I wont state all the potential side effects because it will make this comment into a research paper. Plus you of all people would understand all the side effects. Even if rare its never worth it, just on the suction that is used on the eye there is a small but real chance that one can get Posterior Vitreous Detachment, but that's beyond the point just wish I never did it and understand why some eye doctors after studying the human eye would never do so. So since you are in the eye care world is there anything in the future pipe line for post complication patients that have had their lives ruined because of refractive surgery. LIRIC? Stem-cell regeneration technology? Or something more science fiction Gene expression to build up our corneas from our genetic code that seems impossible to be frank but it nice to think given how desperate I have gotten. Or just to accept my cursed vision and use a band-aid like Ovitz Scleral contacts?

@@DoctorEyeHealthMy RK which was done in the 1990s was great for about a year and then regressed. The doctor did ALK to fine tune it but I was never able to go without glasses after. I began having multiple issues which mostly caused by dry eye problems, something I’d had before the procedure. Over time it became worse, plugs were tried but worked out, one didn’t come out completely. After several years I found a different doctor who referred me to a cornea specialist that explained when my RK was done the flaps weren’t laid down smoothly so I had ripples in them causing uneven tear flow. He sanded one cornea but the other hasn’t been. Both are uncomfortable always and I’ve used tear drops made from my own platelets which help the most. Eventually, my tear ducts were permanently sealed after finding there was part of the plug still inside and causing an infection, the specialist is terrific and listens when I tell him something isn’t right with my eyes. Cataract surgery is next but I waiting as long as possible due to concerns of more dry eye issues. I would never encourage anyone to have corrective surgery just to give up glasses or contacts.

Dr Allen. I was recently diagnosed with pterygium. As a young women I am a bit devastated and the idea of the only treatment being surgery leaves me feeling hopeless. Have you heard anything about cloudbreak clinical trials on CBT-001?! Could this help cure early stages of pterygium?? I have a very minor case but it leaves my eyes dry, red and irritated. Hoping there will be an alternative to surgery in the near future. Also, if I take better care of my eyes with UV blocking sunglasses and eye drops is it possible it could go away?? Thanks for your feedback!!
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth Ай бұрын
Hey thanks so much for asking about this!!! It looks like CBT001 is still in clinical trials and they are currently enrolling in the 3rd trial. That means it may be a few years before it comes to market (if at all). Some doctors may offer to prescribe prescription eye drops such as Restasis or other cyclosporine eye drops to help reduce inflammation, which may slow down the progression. It has been found to slow the progression of recurrence after surgical removal. Otherwise using lubricants and UV protection may slow down the development but unlikely to help it regress. Hope this helps!
