For me I found the best way is to wait until you have a really clear and motivated idea in your head instead of forcing yourself to make a character. Then go into whatever program you’re designing your character on and basically vomit all of your ideas for the character’s design. Let that cook for a day or two then come back and redesign if necessary. Then let that redesign cook and come back to it again. Repeat the process until you end up with a well baked Original Character™ Know that it’ll really depend for each character in regards to how many design changes you do, and how exactly you go about redesigning. For example, an OC I made a long time ago (which has now become a part of my creative history because he was the first of a made up species I became obsessed with) Has had 4 redesigns (2 paper designs, 2 digital designs) until I was fairly happy with his 4th design for a certain period of time, but then I decided to give him a lab coat which became his 5th and SORT OF final design. I say sort of because his character was later abandoned but as of recent I’m deciding to fish up his design again and just implant it as a different character if that makes sense. On the contrary, I made an OC recently that I pretty much nailed the first time except he didn’t have any eyebrows, and then the next day I realized bro’s forehead looked empty which lead to me giving him eyebrows, and that was it.

do you have any tips for coming up with outfits? i love the intricate metalwork on the cloak, the dress, and the shoes. its is a part of character design i always struggle with that isn't talked about as much

Hmm might make a video on that sometime actually, not a very covered topic! I think one of my main goals in character clothing design is to pick out some areas to have stand out features (like the metal I put on the brown shawl), other spots to have more suble detail (like pattern on cloth), and then remaining space to be very simple and have no detail so not to take away from those detailed spots and make the costume cluttered

I feel so insecure about this topic. Like, i almost mastered character design at this point, but the problem is that all the new background characters in my lore looks way more interesting than the main character, who's design havent changed A BIT since 2013. It's *insanely* blank. It's like if just a regular steve would be the main character in genshin. Just a dude in blank shirt n jeans in the universe of tumblr sexymen. And my mc doesn't even have shirt n jeans. She has way cooler designs in different aus and even just lore timelines but the main one is just BLANK. And i would love to change her appearance but simply can't, it's been 11 years, it's been hundreds of art pieces, and i have this unhealthy attachments to my characters, the one where you perceive them not as your creations that you are a god to, but like idk a family members with their own will, and i can't just force someone to change bc i want to. But idk, maybe im really just unsure of myself and overthinking, my friends say although au designs are slaying, her canonical design is simply iconic... man i made her when i was 12. Sorry for venting uhh
