I have Steven Slate Drums Platinum (though for my own music I have my own customized one done in that VST). With some mixing and some humanizing my drums sound great (really, if you either the second or third way, don't forget to humanize your midi recording). I also like to connect electronic drums to the VST and then I can play my customized drums on the real electronic drums.

Another thing you can do (kinda related to the first one) is to use a drum break (it’s mostly used by hip hop producers but bands like Gorillaz and Yes have used drum breaks in their songs as well). Keep in mind though that you might have to adjust the tempo manually and eventually go through sample clearance (unless you’ve used a break that was specifically made for producers to sample). Anyway, this was a really good and helpful video, keep it up.

Hi Graham! Lately I 've been using a drum machine (Alesis SR18) connected through MIDI with my DAW. Obviously or at least most of the times you are talking about the most affordable ways of creating music and a drum machine does not fall into this category. But it could be the fourth way. Thanks for the video! It reminded me about loops! :)

I wonder, at which point I should bring drums into a song composition? in the beginning of making it, or in the end? I guess in the beginning as imo it is like a spine of entire song, right? I am self-taught so I dont have knowledge about it, just putting things without order, tho it turns out ok...
@intercoursehandguns8513 жыл бұрын
I feel like it depends on genre but I, personally, think it's better to add them last in case you want to make any last minute decisions with the rest. Also, any time I've started with drums I feel confined to that pattern, rhythm, or sound whereas I can make what I want and then make the drums fit what I've already made if I do them last.

@@intercoursehandguns851 I wonder, if I import drums in the end, how can I make them synchronized with guitar rhythm, does this program recognizes it and do it on automatically?

more often than not, when i write a song i have a drum beat (or the kick and snare anyway) already in my head, so i tend to end up using the MIDI method. but because i lack the coordination or brain power to think about more than one or two sounds at once, my beats pretty much have to be built in the MIDI editor from the ground up... cymbals have always been the bane of any attempt at drumming for me...

Hey graham i am using ez drummer but my problems is when i am mixing my tracks i get confused of mixing the loops should i add effects should i enhance the bass drum more sometimes when i add reverb or use a compressor i get the feeling that the sound becomes so artificial or unnatural so my question is how do you mix these kinda of loops
@raven56796 жыл бұрын
Virtual Drums usually need little to no enhancing as they’ve already been enhanced before release most of the time. You can make any adjustments you need to if it isn’t sitting right to your ears in your mix... But usually, you don’t need much with them to sound good
@eslamraafat16276 жыл бұрын
The problem is sometimes it the kick drum is what bothers me when i try to give it a little push using the plugin mixer it chokes the snare a little bit and that is when it gets messy so i try to add some reverb then everything goes out of control is there any way to separate the drums elements into the DAW’s mixer so that i can control every piece of the drum set apart from the other?
@kariayamkaridugong35756 жыл бұрын
Eslam Raafat of course you can separate the tracks into individual drum track. I believe all drum software could do it. I use addictive drums

Hello sir, how much time would it take to learn a DAW from scratch? I mean if today is my first day I am ever seeing PRO TOOLS! I have played guitar and piano for years! I have learned classical music! In how much time can I produce my music professionally? Can I Iearn it in a year? Pls help Sir. Thank you.
@Jazzmasterer6 жыл бұрын
Smit Parikh From my little experience from it, recording music is like a separate instrument on its own. It will definitely take more than a year to make a professional recording by yourself. Graham said it took him some years.
@smitparikh39696 жыл бұрын
Jazzmasterer Thank you so much for your advice. I am ready to give my blood and sweat to it.
@tomone20106 жыл бұрын
Smit Parikh You can learn the basics of a DAW within a year. However, to really learn how to produce music and to get to a certain level you actually never learn it. You can spend 20 years and still figure out what sounds good and what does not. Start small and go from there.

Question, I was showing my girlfriend music and she's more of a folky girl, though she does love old school rock. So I thought, start with a song that has folky instruments like banjo and is what I consider good. Then I played a song that only had piano, cello and a singer. She ended up saying it was too "Over-produced." lol I almost lost it in a funny way and was very confused. What the heck qualifies as overproduced? And how do I tell my girlfriend that she's completely wrong when it comes to this topic? I can't stand people who want dat "raw" sound. In my opinion raw is just a bs term. Every good band eq's their music. And yes, telling me to break up with her is not helpful 😜
@fairweatherfriends.3 жыл бұрын
I’m sure you’re not with her now but she meant an eq thing. You had it sounding too shiny. Just do a high shelf and turn it down -6
@intercoursehandguns8513 жыл бұрын
I hate people that have such a jock mentality about music. People like you are only good for making shit by the book but will never try something your own way. There IS a such thing as shit sounding "too clean", it just becomes unnatural and overly polished. Most of the time that makes it end up sounding fake or like a failed attempt. The term "radio ready" was used in this video and that's just happens to be a sound that some people don't like.

I've been a MIDI drum fan since my GarageBand days - however, NOTHING can compare to a real drummer playing real drums
@andrewt2486 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's not a guarantee that real drums played by a drummer will SOUND better. They may or may not. They also may or may not FEEL better. It depends on the drummer, the kit, the space, the engineer, the gear, etc. MIDI drums may be the perfect solution to a given situation.
