The Invisible Lav Covers - Original are the ultimate tool for transparency and invisibility when hiding your lavalier mic.
www.bubblebeeindustries.com/c...
Each pack of The Invisible Lav Covers - Original contains 9 total pieces of fabric in 3 different colours: 3 x Black, 3 x Beige, and 3 x White, with enough Invisible Lav Tape to make each pack good for a minimum of 30 lav mic mounts. In this video, Aj demonstrates 3 of our favourite ways to hide a lavalier microphone on your talent.
0:28 - PREPPING YOUR LAV MIC
To make the mounting process most efficient, it's very important that you prep your lav microphone mount before approaching your talent. The packs of Invisible Lav Covers - Original come with everything you need to do this.
Stick your lavalier mic on the Invisible Lav Tape with the mic capsule sitting in the middle of the pre-cut window. This keeps your microphone free from sticky residue and helps to create a space of dead air around the capsule.
When sticking your Invisible Lav Covers - Original to the tape, ensure the bigger holes are facing out and the smaller holes are being stuck to the tape.
You're ready to go to set!
1:18 - MOUNTING A LAV MIC ON THE CHEST
For this mount, we're going to hide the lav mic straight onto the chest, in the middle of the sternum. It's perfectly safe to apply The Invisible Lav Covers directly to the skin as our super sticky Invisible Lav Tape is hypoallergenic. Using some micropore tape, you can secure the cable to the side of your talent's torso.
2:44 - MOUNTING A LAV MIC IN A SHIRT 1
A great way to mount your lavalier microphone in a shirt is between the shirt seams amongst the buttons. For extra transparency, it's best to hide the microphone with the capsule facing out of the shirt. The choice of three different Invisible Lav Covers - Original colours allows you to closer match your lav mic mount with your talent's costume.
3:38 - MOUNTING A LAV MIC IN A SHIRT 2
Another way to hide your lav microphone in a shirt is by folding over the top edge of The Invisible Lav Covers - Original to encase the capsule. The pre-cut window should be big enough for you to do this without getting glue stuck to the lav capsule. Now you can place the microphone a little closer to the edge of the shirt seam, and the extra protection helps against very low winds and those pesky vocal plosives. This mount is also great when hiding your lav mic in the brim of a hat.

The mount sounds incredible, but, the talent is barely moving. It is extremely rare for an actor to be that still. For future tests, can you have your talent perform typical actions like cross arms, lift hands up, turn quickly, use hands and arms while talking, etc? Thanks.

Now I like your cable savers precisely because they serve both as a strain release as well as a decoupler, and therefore, I'm much less worried about securing a loop point. That one piece of tape running perpendicular as talent breathes in, fine. Doesn't have to be prepped, sticky side out, for example, or anything fancy anymore. And if I leave out the loop but have assured enough slack, even that can be successful. For me, with the cable saver, that second piece of tape becomes more about managing the run of the cable in order to "complete the illusion" and be camera-ready/safe

thanks for the tips! We use this mount with DPA 4060, which is a great mic, but your example here sounds even more transparent than what we've gotten. One thing you do differently is mount it a bit lower on the chest/shirt; why is this better than mounting a bit higher up & closer to the mouth? also, what is the waist strap you used to hold the wireless transmitter?

Hey guys! Sure, so it does depend a little on the body shape, but frequency-wise the voice always sounds more natural when the mic is placed a little outside of the 'shadow' of the chin/neck region. The higher up you go, the more nasal it can sound. The rule of thumb we tend to use is between 20-25cm down from the mouth. On Caleb's chest he has a little 'indent' in which the mic mount sits with a lower profile too, which is better in terms of possible clothing friction. So we capitalise on this. Also, he has some light chest hair a little higher up, which we tried to dodge. Of course, this distance needs to be balanced with the level of ambient noise, as were the background noisy then the closer to the sound source, the better. We used an URSA waist strap (M) to hide the transmitter.

Hi, I am trying the originals in the same fashion as described in the video under a shirt ( second example ), although the rustle has considerably diminished it occasionally occurs during the interview when the talent moves, any further tips to dampen the shirt's rustling?

Hey Laurent! I'm glad you're finding that The Invisible Lav Covers are helping somewhat! In this case, it could be down to cable noise, rather than friction noise on the microphone's capsule. Do you use our Cable Savers? They do a brilliant job at eliminating cable noise below the point that the Cable Saver is installed. This will definitely help. You can also use pieces of fur (such as The Invisible Lav Covers - Fur Outdoor) which you can place under the shirt where it touches the skin to further eliminate this friction noise. We'll be releasing some videos on both of these products in the next few weeks so make sure you're subscribed 😁

Isn't lav placed too low?

Placing the lav mic around the talent's sternum will capture the sound well without it being too close or too far. The sternum provides a good balance between proximity and distance from the talent's mouth which makes it a good starting point, but you can move it closer or even further away from the sound source depending on the microphone or the quality of sound you're trying to capture. I hope this helps.
