Kickflip #2 4:16
Kickflip #3 8:20
On this channel, I've often referred to the Kickflips in three stages. Now, I'm taking the time to break down the differences between each stage, show some examples, and give a rough timeline of when skaters tend to make it teach stage. As well as giving some insights into the usefulness of each stage.
The third version is a bit tough to give a timeline for. As the majority of skater don't reach this plateau. However, it took me five or six years of skating(6 to 8 hours a day in the latter half of this time frame) to reach this stage. So, we can safely say that reaching this stage requires a ton of effort and deliberate practice.
Let me know which tricks you’d like to learn in the comments. Thanks for watching.

i learned level 3 by forcing myself to learn how to flip in to grinds. you don't have to wait to reach level 3 to start flipping into grinds, just start trying and the nature of a flip-into-grind trick will teach you level 3- specifically kickflip nose anything

So true, ive been super meticulous with my kickflips for many years. Once you start being able to build up that pressure and catch them high its super easy to throw into slides and grinds.

47 year old man here lol. What helped me was making sure I was keeping my right shoulder (goofy foot) over the front bolts and not leaning back. Also, like you say keeping tucked, as I have short legs, will help a ton too. That all helps me with the leverage to get them from being mob and a good flick.
@NormanWoods

That shoulder trick really helps. Keep them straight, unless you want your board to turn.

Well explained. I think I reached the 3rd stage but never skated enough to maintain it so it was always a battle.

Honestly, I have days where I still struggle with number 3. Sometimes I won’t try a kickflip until an hour or more into my session. Other days, I stick with version two, or not kickflip at all.

I am about two months or so into my comeback from twenty years off. When I stopped I was on level three, popping high and catching at the apex. Now I’m at level two but super inconsistent. It’s frustrating but it will come back.

Perpetually stuck at stage 2 😂 I got a solid heelflip though. I feel like most people get one or the other so I ain’t mad. Great video, Norman, always enjoy your breakdowns and thoughtful insights into the nuances of skateboarding

#2 is still an accomplishment. It takes a lot of work to break through to the third form. My heelflip was trash until about eight years in. Thank you 🙏🏾

Man in the 80’s I first had learned the side kick, kickflip. I came back recently and landed the freestyle version and now really trying hard to land the popped and caught kickflip of my youth. Think Mike Carrol. It’s coming soon I feel it!

I think it comes from learning the Ollie more. I had a friend that can kick flip everything he can Ollie if he can Ollie the steps or over something he can kickflip it too. I like the snap crispy kickflip catch not the floppy just bout made it.

Man, I'm 36 and have been skating (on and off) for over 20 years. I still have not achieved the high kickflip yet. I can't even ollie higher than like 4 decks stacked. I'd kill to have that.

Right, no. 1 is called the mob flip, when you flip the board down and off the side instead of doing it off the nose/front pocket. That's how I learned my kickflips and man they were ugly haha. You have way less control when you do it this way instead of the proper way. I remember a famous old video of Gonz doing a very rocketed mob flip over a huge gap, but that's Gonz haha
@NormanWoods

I always wondered how Gonz managed to kickflip that big gap, in that way. He’s a legend for great reasons.

I'm still at the first stage, having my front foot far behind the bolts and pointed forward. I barely catch them, more like I throw them down. But I've landed one over a drain, down a curb and up it, and I'm pleased with that. I think I've probably landed 100 or less altogether though, so I have a long ways to go. Just curious, are there different stages of heelflips?
@NormanWoods
@NormanWoods 5 ай бұрын
That’s good progress. I remember how happy I was, to land a kickflip off a curb. With heelflips there are definitely at least two different versions. I think I’ll go over those next.

Hi Norman, I follow you here and on Facebook also, I really love your skateboarding videos and tips. I have recently bought a new pair of Ace AF1 , which I am really enjoying, but they feel way more loose compared to Independent or thunders which I am more used to, I don't mind having them loose, hence I like 90A Bushings, but sometimes my legs feels quite tired and skateboarding become too challenging with loose trucks and with the ace soft bushings which I think are 86A bottom ones and 91A top ones, I know Ace does the hard ones also 94A , but I am worried if they may be too stiff for me. What Bushings do you use? I wish Ace did 90 or 92 bushings. I can actually try to keep the top stock one (91a) and just replace the bottom one with the 94a one , but I am curious to know what your setup is like.
@NormanWoods
@NormanWoods 4 ай бұрын
I love the Af1. The soft bushings cause them to be a bit loose. I used to swap for the Bones medium. But, since Ace sent me some of their hard, I’ve used them. They work well. Not sure about the stiffness. I weight over 200 pounds and skate my trucks medium tightness.

@@NormanWoods I upgraded my Ace AF1 with ace hard bushings and they feel perfect for me, I weigh 165 lbs and they feel perfect for me know , I also needed upgrade them because I had a few slams caused by wheel bites.

@@RonnieRomanoXglad they worked out. I’ve had similar issues with soft bushings. Even worse, I completely broke through a set of Bones soft, in one session.
